Liu Huan was one of China's most influential musicians, composers and music teachers. He passed away in Shanghai on September 25, 2026, aged 63. For more than 40 years, his powerful voice and deep love for music shaped China's pop music and inspired millions of listeners at home and abroad.

Born in Tianjin in 1963, Liu studied French literature at the University of International Relations. He became famous nationwide in 1985 after winning a university bilingual singing competition. His early song Wanwan de Yueliang made him popular. He created great theme music for many famous works, such as the TV series 《Water Margin》, 《Empresses in the Palace》 and the sci-fi hit 《The Wandering Earth》.

He won global fame for 《You and Me》, the theme song of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. At the opening ceremony, he sang this warm song together with British singer Sarah Brightman. Billions of people around the world watched their performance.

Besides making music, Liu worked as a university teacher for over 30 years. From 1991, he was an associate professor. His popular course 《A History of Western Music》 always drew many students. He even wrote the school's official song.

Liu also tried hard to support Chinese original music. As a mentor in the show Sing My Song, he found and helped many unknown songwriters. In 2019, he gave away 20 million yuan to set up a music fund for young independent musicians.

Liu left us lots of wonderful songs and a great spirit. He set a good example: keep looking for artistic perfection, teach young people and lift up the next generation of musicians.
