IV. Reading Comprehension(阅读理解,36~50题,每题3分,共45分)

阅读下列短文,然后从各题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳答案。

Passage 1

Sleep is one of the most important things for our health. Many people think they can get by with only a few hours of sleep, but research shows that most adults need seven to nine hours every night. Teenagers, in fact, need even more — about nine to ten hours.

When we sleep, our bodies are busy doing important work. They repair damaged cells, build new muscle tissue, and release hormones that help with growth and development. The brain also processes information from the day, moving it from short-term memory into long-term memory. This is why students who get enough sleep before an exam usually do better than those who stay up all night studying.

Lack of sleep has been connected with many health problems. Studies have found that people who sleep less than six hours a night are more likely to develop heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. The reason is that not enough sleep can change the levels of hormones that control hunger, which may lead to overeating. It can also weaken the immune system, making the body less able to fight off infections and illnesses.

Sleep also plays a key role in mental health. People who don't get enough sleep are more likely to feel anxious, irritable, and depressed. They may also find it harder to concentrate, make decisions, and react quickly. Studies show that drowsy driving causes thousands of accidents each year — as dangerous as driving after drinking alcohol.

To improve sleep quality, experts offer several useful suggestions. First, try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Second, avoid using electronic screens for at least one hour before bedtime, because the blue light from screens reduces the production of melatonin — the hormone that helps control our sleep cycle. Third, keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet. Finally, avoid drinking coffee and alcohol a few hours before bed. Although alcohol may help you fall asleep, it reduces the quality of deep sleep.

In short, getting enough sleep is not a luxury — it is a basic need for a healthy body and mind. We should take sleep as seriously as we take diet and exercise.

36. According to the passage, how many hours of sleep do most adults need every night?

A. Five to six hours. B. Seven to nine hours. C. Nine to ten hours. D. More than ten hours.

37. What happens to the brain when we sleep?

A. It stops working completely. B. It only rests without doing anything. C. It processes information and moves it into long-term memory. D. It forgets unimportant things from the day.

38. According to the passage, lack of sleep may cause all the following problems EXCEPT ______.

A. heart disease B. obesity C. cancer D. diabetes

39. Why does lack of sleep lead to overeating?

A. Because it makes people feel hungry all the time. B. Because it changes the hormone levels that control hunger. C. Because people eat more snacks while watching TV. D. Because the body needs more energy to stay awake.

40. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way to improve sleep quality?

A. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. B. Avoiding screens before bedtime. C. Taking sleeping pills before going to bed. D. Keeping the bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.

41. What does the author think of sleep in the last paragraph?

A. Sleep is a luxury that not everyone can enjoy. B. We need less sleep as we grow older. C. Sleep is less important than diet and exercise. D. Sleep is as important as diet and exercise for our health.

Passage 2

3D printing is a technology that creates real, physical objects from digital designs. The basic idea is simple: a machine builds an object layer by layer, adding material one thin layer at a time. Think of it like squeezing toothpaste from a tube — but instead of toothpaste, the machine uses plastic, metal, or even food materials, and it does it all by itself.

3D printing has been around since the 1980s, but it has only become common in recent years. The reason is that the machines used to be very expensive, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Today, you can buy a small 3D printer for your home for just a few hundred dollars.

One of the most exciting areas where 3D printing is being used is medicine. Doctors are now using 3D printers to create custom prosthetic limbs for people who have lost arms or legs. They are also printing dental crowns, hearing aids, and even simple human tissues using living cells. In the future, scientists hope to print entire organs, which could save millions of lives by reducing the long waiting time for organ donations.

Architecture is another field that has benefited greatly. Architects use 3D printers to build detailed models of their building designs, which helps them spot problems before construction begins. Engineers also use the technology to produce car parts and airplane components that are lighter and stronger than traditional parts.

In space exploration, 3D printing could be a real game-changer. Scientists are developing plans to use 3D printers on the Moon or Mars to build shelters. Instead of carrying heavy building materials from Earth — which is extremely expensive — astronauts could simply use local soil or rock as the raw material and let the printer do the work.

However, like any technology, 3D printing also brings some challenges. There are concerns about its environmental impact, since many of the materials used are plastics that are not easy to recycle. There is also the fear that 3D printing could take away jobs in traditional manufacturing. And there are safety concerns — for example, people could potentially print dangerous items like weapons at home, making them harder to control.

Despite these challenges, 3D printing remains an exciting and powerful technology. As it continues to improve, it will only become more important in our daily lives.

42. What is the basic principle of 3D printing?

A. It cuts materials into the shape of an object. B. It uses special ink to draw objects on paper. C. It builds an object layer by layer. D. It melts metal to create objects.

43. Why has 3D printing become more common in recent years?

A. Because the technology has become much faster. B. Because the printers have become much cheaper. C. Because people no longer need traditional products. D. Because governments have required its use.

44. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT mentioned as a use of 3D printing?

A. Making prosthetic limbs. B. Building car parts. C. Printing human organs already in hospitals. D. Building shelters on the Moon or Mars.

45. What is one concern about 3D printing mentioned in the passage?

A. It is too slow for factory production. B. It could take away jobs in traditional manufacturing. C. It can only use plastic materials. D. It is too expensive for small businesses.

46. What is the author's attitude towards 3D printing?

A. Strongly against it. B. Completely worried. C. Not interested at all. D. Hopeful despite the challenges.

Passage 3

Tea is one of the most popular drinks in the world, but have you ever wondered where it came from? The story of tea begins in China, which is widely recognized as the birthplace of tea. According to legend, tea was first discovered by the Chinese emperor Shen Nong in 2737 BC. The story says that while he was boiling water under a tree, a leaf from the wild tea tree fell into his cup. He decided to drink it and found that it tasted pleasant and made him feel more awake and energetic.

By the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), tea had become very popular throughout China. It was during this period that a famous scholar named Lu Yu wrote The Classic of Tea (Cha Jing), the first book ever devoted entirely to the art of growing, preparing, and drinking tea. This book helped spread tea culture across the country and made tea drinking a respected art form.

China is home to many different types of tea, each with its own special flavor and character. The four most famous Chinese teas are Longjing (Dragon Well) from Hangzhou, known for its fresh, mild taste; Biluochun from Suzhou, famous for its delicate floral aroma; Tieguanyin, a type of oolong tea from Fujian with a rich, smooth flavor; and Pu'er from Yunnan, a dark fermented tea that actually improves with age, much like fine wine.

Tea plays an important role in Chinese social life. When you visit a Chinese home, the host will almost always serve tea to welcome you. Offering tea is seen as a sign of respect and warmth. In traditional Chinese weddings, the bride and groom serve tea to their parents as a way of showing gratitude and respect for their upbringing. In restaurants, when someone pours tea for you, it is polite to tap your fingers lightly on the table to express your thanks — a custom that has been passed down for hundreds of years.

In recent years, scientists have studied the health benefits of tea and found strong evidence to support what the Chinese have known for thousands of years. Green tea, in particular, contains powerful antioxidants that may help reduce the risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer. It may also help with weight loss and improve brain function.

Today, tea is enjoyed by billions of people around the world. But no matter how far it has spread, it will always have its roots in Chinese culture.

47. According to the legend, who first discovered tea?

A. Lu Yu. B. A farmer from Yunnan. C. A restaurant owner. D. The Chinese emperor Shen Nong.

48. When did tea become widely popular in China?

A. Before 2737 BC. B. During the Tang Dynasty. C. After Lu Yu wrote The Classic of Tea. D. In recent years.

49. What does the underlined word "it" in the last paragraph refer to?

A. Tea culture. B. Chinese food. C. The Chinese language. D. The Chinese wedding.

50. What is the best title for this passage?

A. How to Make Good Tea B. The Health Benefits of Green Tea C. Famous Chinese Tea Types D. The History and Culture of Chinese Tea

Passage 4

In Britain, good manners are considered very important, and there are some social rules that visitors may find surprising. One of the most famous British customs is queuing — the British are known worldwide for their love of standing in line.

Whether waiting for a bus, buying tickets at a shop, or waiting to be seated at a restaurant, the British expect everyone to wait their turn in an orderly line. Pushing in ahead of others, known as "jumping the queue," is considered extremely rude and will almost certainly result in dirty looks or even comments from other people waiting in line. In fact, the British will form a queue even when there is no clear line marked on the ground — they simply know where the end of the queue should be.

Another important part of British manners is the use of polite expressions. The British say "please," "thank you," and "sorry" very frequently — even in situations where people in other countries might not bother. For example, if someone steps on your foot by accident in a crowded street, they will almost certainly say "sorry," and you are expected to say "sorry" back, even though it was not your fault. Shop assistants and waiters also expect to hear "please" and "thank you" with every request.

British table manners are also worth mentioning. The British generally follow continental European style, holding the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right. It is considered impolite to talk with your mouth full, and making noise while eating or drinking soup is seen as very bad manners. Bread should be torn into small pieces rather than bitten directly from a large slice.

Tipping is another area where British customs may differ from those in other countries. In most British restaurants, a service charge of 12.5% is already included in the bill. If it is not included, a tip of 10% to 15% is considered appropriate. It is also common to tip taxi drivers about 10%, and hairdressers usually expect a similar amount.

These customs may seem small and unimportant to outsiders, but they reflect the deep importance that British culture places on politeness, order, and respect for others. Understanding and following these rules will help visitors feel more comfortable during their stay in Britain.

51. What will most probably happen if you push in ahead of others in a queue in Britain?

A. People will ignore you completely. B. People will ask you to leave immediately. C. People will show their unhappiness through looks or words. D. People will call the police to report you.

52. What does the passage say about the British use of "sorry"?

A. They only say it when they are truly at fault. B. They say it frequently, even in situations where it may not seem necessary. C. They rarely use it in daily life. D. They only say it to family members and close friends.

53. According to the passage, how much tip is usually expected for a taxi driver?

A. About 5%. B. About 10%. C. About 15%. D. About 20%.
