Many students measure their popularity by the number of friends they have. They collect contacts like trophies, attend every party, and say yes to every invitation. They think that a large social circle means a happy life. But look around you. The people with the most friends are often the loneliest. They know many names, but they can count on no one. They have a hundred conversations a day, but not one where they can say what they really feel. This year's exam asked you to rank study, sleep, and socializing. Many of you may have put socializing high on the list. But the question is not how much you socialize. The question is how well.
A real friendship is not built on quantity. It is built on trust, respect, and the ability to listen without judging. A true friend is the person you can call at midnight when everything goes wrong. They do not need to fix your problem. They just need to be there. They remember your birthday without a reminder. They notice when you are quiet and ask if you are okay. They tell you the truth even when it is uncomfortable. These are not things you get from a hundred acquaintances. These are things you get from a few genuine people who know you well and choose to stay.
Every relationship has conflict. You will disagree with your friends. You will hurt each other. You will wonder if the friendship is worth the trouble. The difference between a weak friendship and a strong one is not the absence of arguments. It is the willingness to resolve them. A strong friendship requires compromise, honesty, and the courage to say you are sorry. It also requires boundary — knowing where you end and the other person begins. People who are afraid of conflict usually have the shallowest friendships. People who can disagree and still care have the deepest ones.
So when you rank socializing in your life, do not rank it by how many parties you attend or how many names you know. Rank it by how many people you can call when you need help. Rank it by how many people know your real self and still want to be around you. A life with five true friends is richer than a life with five hundred casual ones. Socializing is not about being everywhere. It is about being deeply somewhere — with a few people who matter. Invest in those relationships. They will not give you a higher test score. They will not get you into a better university. But they will be there on the days when the test score does not matter, when the university feels far away, when you just need someone to say: I am here. That is the true value of friendship.
