On June 19th, the Aquarium（水族馆） of the Pacific in Long Beach, California, took in almost 500 animals in one go. Fish, invertebrates（无脊椎动物）and sharks were all brought into the aquarium. But the aquarium had not gone on a big shopping trip.
These animals were saved from animal trafficking（动物走私）. They were in urgent need of a home. The aquarium workers worked through the night to take care of them.
"Every animal that arrives here receives the same high standard of care. What can be different is the condition they arrive in," said Johnathan Casey, an animal expert at the aquarium.
Many trafficked animals had travelled in stressful or poor conditions, so the experts checked their health, the water quality and their needs right away. They usually knew little about an animal's history, so the team had to be ready for anything. The saved animals were also kept away from each other for a while to stop the spread of diseases.
The saved animals included brownbanded bamboo sharks（条斑竹鲨）and clownfish（小丑鱼）, animals that are in danger in the wild.
Taking in almost 500 animals at once was a big event, but it was not the first time. Since September 2024, the aquarium has received animals from more than 30 such events — about one every three weeks. In the past two years, it has taken in over 3,600 animals.
The aquarium asks the public to be smart buyers to help stop wildlife trafficking. Casey's advice: before buying an exotic pet（外来宠物）, learn about the animal and whether it is protected. And buy from a seller you can trust. "If the seller cannot tell you where the animal came from, do not buy it. That is a way to help," he said.
