news.mit.eduMIT NewsHow some skills become second nature副标题:Patterns of gaze and attention can reveal how some people unconsciously figure out how to master a task作者:Jennifer Chu 发布时间:March 4, 2026原文:news.mit.edu/2026/how-some-skills-become-second-nature-0304研究发表于:Journal of Neural Engineering论文题目:Cognitive Reinforcement: Capturing Tacit Knowledge and Enhancing Expertise with a Biofeedback Interface for Visual Attention研究团队:MIT 机械工程系、Media Lab、Brain and Cognitive Sciences 等机构研究问题:能不能利用眼动和 EEG 记录,把人们自己无法表达的"隐性知识"找出来,并进一步用于训练DOI:10.1088/1741-2552/ae3eb8根据 MIT News 完整报道和原始论文重新整理为高考化阅读版本,保留主要信息链:概念提出 → 研究问题 → 实验设计 → 学习过程 → 眼动与 EEG 证据 → 反馈实验 → 结果 → 潜在应用。 When We Know More Than We Can ExplainExperts often know things that they find surprisingly difficult to explain. An experienced cyclist, for example, may easily keep a bicycle balanced but struggle to describe exactly how much pressure should be applied to each pedal. A skilled doctor may quickly notice something unusual in a medical image without being able to describe every mental step that led to the judgment.
This kind of hidden know-how is often called tacit knowledge. Unlike facts that can be written in a textbook or explained through a set of rules, tacit knowledge is usually developed through experience and may be difficult to put into words.
Researchers at MIT wondered whether such knowledge could be detected even when people themselves were unaware that they had learned it. If so, they asked, could this hidden knowledge eventually be made explicit and used to improve learning?
To investigate the question, the researchers recruited 30 volunteers and asked them to classify more than 120 images. Each image contained two shapes, one on each side. The shapes varied in color, form and pattern.
Unknown to the participants, only one side of each image contained information that was useful for deciding whether the image belonged to group A or group B. The other side was essentially noise.
The volunteers were not told the classification rule. At first, they had little idea how to sort the images and often had to guess. But after seeing many examples, their performance gradually improved. By the later part of the experiment, many participants were able to classify the images with much greater accuracy.
Something else had changed as well. At the beginning, participants tended to look at both sides of each image. As they became better at the task, however, their gaze increasingly shifted toward the side containing the useful information.
The surprising part was that the participants did not realize they were doing this. When the researchers asked them what strategy they had learned, the volunteers generally could not identify the relevant side of the image or explain why their performance had improved.
To examine the process more closely, the researchers used cameras to track the participants' eye movements. They also recorded brain activity using electroencephalography, or EEG.
The images were designed so that the two sides flickered at slightly different frequencies. The flickering was too subtle for participants to consciously notice, but researchers could detect which frequency was reflected in their brain activity. This provided another way to determine where a person's attention was focused, even when their eyes alone did not reveal the full story.
Both forms of measurement pointed to the same pattern. As participants became more skilled, their visual and cognitive attention increasingly favored the part of the image that actually mattered for classification.
In other words, the participants had learned something important without being able to say what they had learned. The researchers considered this a measurable form of tacit knowledge.
They then asked another question. What would happen if they made this hidden knowledge visible to the participants?
After participants had become skilled at the task, some were shown information based on their own patterns of attention. This feedback revealed where they had been unconsciously focusing when they made successful decisions.
Those participants improved their classification performance even further compared with equally trained participants who did not receive the same feedback.
The result suggests that unconscious knowledge does not necessarily have to remain unconscious. At least in some tasks, researchers may be able to detect hidden strategies and then turn them into information that a learner can deliberately use.
The findings do not mean that every kind of expertise can easily be converted into a simple rule. The study involved a controlled visual-classification task, and real-world skills are usually much more complicated.
Still, the researchers believe the approach could eventually be useful in fields where visual attention matters. These could include sports, skilled trades and medical image analysis, in which experienced people often notice important features that beginners overlook.
The broader idea is simple: people may sometimes learn more than they realize. If science can identify what experienced learners are doing differently, some knowledge that once took years to develop through trial and error might become easier to teach.
What does "tacit knowledge" mainly refer to in the passage?A. Knowledge that can only be learned from textbooks.B. Skills or understanding that people possess but find difficult to explain.C. Information that people deliberately keep secret.D. Facts that experts have completely forgotten. 最容易错的是 C——tacit 有"未明说的"意思,但本文不是 people refuse to tell(故意不表达),而是 they cannot easily articulate it(不会表达)。 Group A or Group B,另一边 just noise。
Why did the researchers make only one side of each image relevant to classification?A. To see whether participants would gradually focus on useful information.B. To prevent participants from seeing both shapes.C. To make the images more attractive.D. To test whether participants preferred one color to another. Why was the experiment designed this way?
What changed as the participants became more skilled at the task?A. They began looking mainly at the useful side of the images.B. They learned the classification rule from the researchers.C. They stopped looking at the images carefully.D. They became consciously aware of every feature they used. D 特别典型——原文恰好说 they were not aware,选项偷换成 consciously aware。 眼动摄像机告诉研究人员 where the eyes were looking,但眼睛看哪里并不百分之百等于 where cognitive attention is focused。
Why did the researchers use EEG in addition to eye tracking?A. To measure how quickly participants moved their eyes.B. To gain additional information about where participants' attention was directed.C. To teach the participants the correct classification rule.D. To make the images flicker more strongly. What different information did each method provide? What rule did you learn? 三个信息放在一起——Performance improved + Attention changed + Participants couldn't explain why——研究人员认为这就是 evidence of tacit knowledge。
What provided the strongest evidence that participants had developed tacit knowledge?A. They could clearly explain the classification rule.B. Their performance and attention changed even though they could not explain the strategy.C. They remembered all 120 images.D. They completed the experiment more quickly than expected. Can making it explicit improve performance?
What happened when some trained participants were shown information about their own attention patterns?A. Their classification performance improved further.B. They forgot the strategy they had learned.C. Their eye movements became completely random.D. They performed worse than beginners. Group A(trained + feedback)vs Group B(equally trained + no same feedback),然后比较。
Why was a control group necessary in the feedback experiment?A. To determine whether the extra improvement was related to the feedback rather than training alone.B. To make sure all participants received the same information.C. To find which participants had better eyesight.D. To reduce the number of images used. What variable are researchers trying to isolate?十一、一个非常标准的词义猜测:articulate文章里说 experts may possess knowledge even if they cannot articulate it。
What does "articulate" most likely mean in the passage?A. To practice repeatedly.B. To express clearly in words.D. To remember for a long time.
What can be inferred about the possible applications of the study?A. The method has already been proven effective for every kind of expert skill.B. Tacit knowledge can always be turned into simple written rules.C. Similar methods might help reveal hidden expertise in some visually demanding fields.D. Experience will no longer be necessary for learning difficult skills. 全文的 could / suggest / may / some forms 决定正确答案也必须谨慎;A 的 every、B 的 always、D 的 no longer necessary 全部扩大。Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Why Eye Movements Make People SmarterB. Scientists Find a Way to Detect Hidden Know-HowC. Why Experts No Longer Need PracticeD. A Simple Rule for Mastering Every SkillA:eye movement 1. know how to do ≠ know how to explain2. unconscious ≠ unimportant(没有意识到,不代表不起作用)3. attention shifted ≠ participants consciously changed strategy4. may be useful in other fields ≠ has already been proven in all fields5. feedback improved trained participants ≠ feedback alone created expertise6. tacit knowledge ≠ secret knowledge(一个是 cannot easily tell,一个是 do not want to tell)不做长词表,这一篇留下这些:
