1. Yutian Ma, Ph.D. and current postdoctoral researcher, has studied around the world, but found his position in Assistant Professor Owen Fenton’s lab in the US.

Ma has studied biomedical engineering in China, Australia, England and Singapore. “Working with different people across different cultures helped me realize that science is like a unifying language. It also exposed me to a lot of new insights and ideas,” said Ma.

Fenton and Ma first worked together at the National University of Singapore in 2021. “Yutian is a talented experimentalist and can generate powerful sets of data. Also, his ability to sit down, think critically, and chat about science in an informal capacity brings out his creativity,” said Fenton, Ph.D.

Luckily for Fenton, the feeling was mutual and the two have now worked together for three years. When Fenton started his lab, building an effective team was his top priority. “If you find the right people, they can solve complex and important problems. I find the most interesting questions interdisciplinary in nature and that’s why you need a team of great people with different research backgrounds like Yutian,” he said.

Creative is also a word Fenton uses to describe the environment of his lab and it’s reflected in the way he mentors his students – by advocating for brainstorming sessions and group recharging.

“Dr. Fenton provides a space where you’re allowed to express your own ideas and have him support you through the research process. His mentorship has helped me grow, and, because of his influence, I want to incorporate the same mentoring style in the future,” said Ma.

Bringing each of their strengths and backgrounds, Ma in engineering and Fenton in drug delivery and synthetic chemistry, the partners have found their success.

2. I grew up knowing I was different, and I hated it. I was born with a cleft palate(腭裂), and when I started to go to school, my classmates—who were constantly teasing—made it clear to me how I must look to others: a little girl with a misshapen lip, crooked nose, lopsided teeth, and hollow and somewhat unclear speech.

When my schoolmates asked, "What happened to your lip?" I'd tell them that I'd fallen as a baby and cut it on a piece of glass. Somehow it seemed more acceptable to have suffered anaccident than to have been born different. By the age of seven I was convinced that no one outside my own family could ever love me, or even like me.

And then I entered the second grade, and Mrs. Leonard's class. She was round and pretty and fragrant, with shining brown hair and warm dark eyes that smiled even on the rare occasions when her mouth didn't. Everyone adored her. But no one came to love her more than I did.

The time came for the annual "hearing tests" given at our school. I was barely able to hear anything out of one ear, and was not about to reveal yet another problem that would single me out as different. And so I cheated. I had learned to watch other children and raised my hand when they did during group testing. The "whisper test" ,however, required a different kind of deception : Each child would go to the door of the classroom, turn sideways, close one ear with a finger, and the teacher would whisper something from her desk, which the child would repeat. As usual, I was last, but allthrough the testing I wondered what Mrs. Leonard might say to me. I knew from previous years that she whispered things like"The sky is blue" or "Do you have new shoes?"

My turn came up. I turned my bad ear to her plugging up the othersolidly with my finger, then gently backed my finger out enough to be able tohear. I waited and then heard the words that changed my life forever. Mrs.Leonard, the pretty, fragrant teacher I adored, said softly, "I wish you were my little girl."

4. My name is August. I’m not an ordinary ten- year-old boy. I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you are thinking, it’s probably worse.

When I was in my mom’ s stomach , no one had any idea I would come out looking the way I look. About two months before I was born, the doctors realized there was something wrong with my face, but they didn’t' t think it was going to be bad. They told Mom and Dad I had a cleft palate(唇腭裂) and some other stuff going on.

There were two nurses in the delivery room the night I was born. One was very nice and sweet. The other one, Mom said, did not seem at all nice or sweet. She had very big arms and she kept farting(放屁). Like, she’d bring Mom some ice chips , and then fart . She ' d check Mom ' s blood pressure , and fart . Mom says it was unbelievable because the nurse never even said excuse me !

When I came out of Mom ' s stomach , she said the whole room got very quiet . Mom didn’t even get a chance to look at me because the nice nurse immediately rushed me out of the room . Mom got very upset and tried to get out of bed to see where they were going , but the farting nurse put her very big arms on Mom to keep her down in the bed . They were practically fighting , because Mom was hysterical and the farting nurse was yelling at her to stay calm. And then all of a sudden she let out the biggest , loudest , smelliest fart in the history of farts . Anyway , when Mom tells this story , she acts out all the parts—including the farting noises—and it is so , so funny! Mom saysthe farting nurse turned out to be a very nice woman . She stayed with Mom the whole time and didn’t leave her side. After I had lived through the night , it was that nurse who held Mom' s hand when they brought her to meet me for the first time .

When Mom looked down into my tiny mushed up face for the first time , all she could see was how pretty my eyes were. She kissed me all over my face and she even kissed my tortoise mouth. Mom didn’t see me as ordinary but she saw me extraordinary. What I value most is the care and love from my mum.
