W: Today’s lecture is about earthquake earlywarning systems. When an earthquake strikes, two types of waves will be released. Pwaves travel fast but cause little damage. Swaves are slower but far more destructive. Sensors placed along fault lines can detect Pwaves within seconds. They calculate the earthquake’s location and magnitude, then send warnings to phones, trains, and hospitals before the Swaves arrive. The warning time can be just seconds or up to a minute, depending on your distance from the epicenter. If you receive an alert while indoors, drop, cover, and hold on under a strong table. Stay away from windows and heavy furniture. If you’re driving, pull over and stay inside your car. Japan, Mexico, and parts of the US already have such systems in place. China is also developing its own early warning system.
