At a health centre on the Shetland Islands, the doctor's next piece of advice may sound unusual: "Go to the beach twice a week, and watch the birds while you are there." In several countries, doctors are now allowed to write what are informally called "nature prescriptions" — recommendations to spend regular time outdoors as part of a patient's treatment.

The idea is simple to run. Instead of costly medicine, the doctor hands over a calendar of local outdoor activities: coastal walks, community gardening, bird watching. Most of the activities are free and within walking distance, which matters in areas where patients may have little spare money. Health workers then check in with patients a few weeks later — not to ask whether the "medicine" was taken, but to talk about what they noticed on the way.

The evidence behind the scheme is growing. Studies have found that about twenty minutes in a green space can measurably lower stress hormones, and that attention improves after walking among trees. In Canada, some doctors can even issue passes that give patients free entry to national parks, on the theory that a yearly pass is cheaper than a year of anxiety-related doctor visits.

Nobody claims that trees can replace tablets. Patients with serious conditions still need proper medical care, and organizers are careful to describe nature as a partner to treatment, not a substitute. "What we are really prescribing," one doctor explains, "is a change of scene and a bit of movement — and the fact that it comes with a sea view is a bonus."

1. What do "nature prescriptions" refer to in the passage?

A. Doctors' advice to spend regular time outdoors as part of treatment.

B. New medicines made from plants found in green spaces.

C. Free tickets to national parks for all patients.

D. Exercise plans designed by personal trainers.

2. Why does the scheme mainly use free, nearby activities?

A. Because patients dislike travelling far for exercise.

B. Because many patients have little spare money.

C. Because doctors want patients to walk to the hospital.

D. Because outdoor activities nearby are medically stronger.

3. What does Paragraph 3 tell us about time in green spaces?

A. It works better than anxiety medicines in every case.

B. It should last at least an hour to show any effect.

C. It can reduce stress and improve attention.

D. It has been studied mainly in Canadian national parks.

4. How do organizers describe the role of nature, according to the last paragraph?

A. A full replacement for medical treatment.

B. A partner that works alongside proper treatment.

C. A bonus offered only to patients with serious conditions.

D. A cheaper cure for all stress-related illnesses.

The Secret Power of Curiosity

When you were little, you probably asked "why" a hundred times a day. Then school, schedules and worry about exams took over, and most of us quietly stopped asking.     36     Researchers have found that curiosity is one of the strongest engines of learning — and unlike talent, it can be trained.

Curiosity changes how the brain stores information. In one study, people were shown a list of faces they had never seen before. Before some of the faces, a question appeared: "Will you like this person?" Those who were curious remembered far more — and not only the faces they had asked about.     37

So how can students put this to work? Simple: before you study, turn the material into questions.     38     Hunting for answers keeps the mind awake in a way that passive reading never does.

Curiosity also builds courage.     39     Every question you dare to ask makes the next one easier, and a classroom where questions are welcome becomes a place where mistakes can teach.

Best of all, curiosity is free and endless.     40     As one teacher puts it, "The students who go furthest are not the ones with all the answers, but the ones with the best questions."

A. Some teachers believe that regular tests are the only fair way to measure real progress.

B. Yet curiosity is not a childish habit we should grow out of.

C. Curiosity, it seems, puts the whole brain into a state where it gladly takes in everything nearby.

D. Instead of reading a chapter straight through, first turn its headings into questions.

E. Smartphones can answer most questions in seconds, which makes asking them feel unnecessary.

F. People who ask questions in class are not smarter; they have simply made friends with not knowing.

G. The world is full of wonders; you only need to keep the questions coming.

1. A 第一段 "doctors are now allowed to write what are informally called 'nature prescriptions' — recommendations to spend regular time outdoors as part of a patient's treatment" → 自然处方即医生建议病人定期进行户外活动作为治疗的一部分,选 A。

2. B 第二段 "Most of the activities are free and within walking distance, which matters in areas where patients may have little spare money" → 免费、就近是因为病人余钱不多,选 B。

3. C 第三段 "about twenty minutes in a green space can measurably lower stress hormones, and that attention improves after walking among trees" → 绿色空间里的时间能降压、提升注意力,选 C。

4. B 末段 "organizers are careful to describe nature as a partner to treatment, not a substitute" → 自然是治疗的伙伴而非替代品,选 B。

多余项:A(有些老师认为定期测验才是衡量进步的唯一公平方式)谈"测验与评价",与"好奇心促进学习"的论证无关;E(智能手机几秒就能回答大多数问题,让提问显得没必要)与全文"要保持提问"的立场相反。
