Passage 1

On a mild April morning in 2026, Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi province, hosted the Fifth National Reading Conference. For the first time, the country also launched its "National Reading Activity Week," running from April 20 to 26 under the theme "Promoting reading together, building a book-friendly society." Behind the cheerful slogan lies a quieter shift: reading, once promoted mainly through short campaigns, is now backed by law. China's first dedicated regulation on public reading took effect on February 1, 2026, turning a long-standing appeal into an institutional duty.

How far has the habit spread? The 23rd National Reading Survey, released at the conference, offers hard numbers. Among adults, the comprehensive reading rate — covering books, newspapers, periodicals and screens — reached 82.3 percent, up 0.2 points from 2024. On average each adult finished 8.39 printed and digital books a year, while digital titles surpassed 70 million. Younger readers lead the trend: minors aged 0–17 posted a reading rate of 86.7 percent and read 11.72 books each. Clearly, the love of reading is no longer a minority pursuit.

The numbers are matched by a dense web of spaces. China now runs more than 3,250 free public libraries, over 120,000 physical bookstores, about 580,000 rural book rooms (农家书屋:建在乡村的便民阅读点), and upwards of 40,000 new-style urban reading spots. In Nanchang alone, 111 community libraries called "Ruzi Book Houses" form a "15-minute reading circle," placing a shelf within a short walk of almost every resident. Digital access widens the reach still further: 670 million people use digital reading, and the National Library records over 1.5 billion online views a year.

Yet the real change is less about statistics than about atmosphere. From book fairs in Shanghai to book-borrowing machines in Hong Kong, reading has quietly permeated everyday life. A boy who recites a classical poem at the Tengwang Pavilion can win free entry for his parent — more than 252,000 families have taken the challenge. In rural Guizhou, a former banker turned a rice-field path into a mobile library for village children. As one poet who once delivered meals put it, "When you learn to love reading, you learn to love life." What began as a policy goal is slowly being woven into the texture of ordinary days — proof that a nation's spirit can be built, book by book.

  1. What does the 23rd National Reading Survey show about reading in China?A. Minors read fewer books than adults on average.B. The adult comprehensive reading rate was exactly 82.1 percent in the latest survey.C. Adults finished 8.39 books each year and minors reached an 86.7 percent reading rate.D. There were fewer than 70 million digital titles available to readers.
  2. What can be inferred about the change described in the passage?A. China's reading campaign now rests on both legal backing and everyday-life integration, not slogans alone.B. The new law turns reading into a required school subject.C. City residents read markedly more than people in the countryside.D. Printed books are likely to disappear from most bookstores soon.
  3. The word "permeated" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.A. measured and recorded in a systematic wayB. spread through and gradually became part ofC. replaced something and pushed it asideD. criticized and openly questioned
  4. What is the author's main purpose in writing this passage?A. To compare China's reading habit with that of foreign countries.B. To prove that digital reading is superior to paper reading.C. To list the problems facing rural book rooms across the country.D. To show how China is turning a "book-friendly society" from policy into daily life through law, spaces and culture.

第2段明确给出"each adult finished 8.39 printed and digital books a year"(成年人年均 8.39 本)与"minors aged 0–17 posted a reading rate of 86.7 percent"(未成年人阅读率 86.7%),C 两项数据同时吻合。

第1段"once promoted mainly through short campaigns, is now backed by law"与第3–4段"dense web of spaces / quietly permeated everyday life / woven into the texture of ordinary days"共同推出:阅读推广已从单纯口号转为"法律支撑+生活嵌入"双重底座,原文无原句。

末段前文讲阅读"from book fairs… to book-borrowing machines",后文说"woven into the texture of ordinary days(织入日常肌理)","reading has quietly permeated everyday life"语义上指阅读"渗透、弥漫并逐渐成为日常的一部分",目标词已加粗提示定位,B 最贴合。

Passage 2

Most of us have felt it: the burning sense, while walking into a room, that every eye is fixed on us, judging our clothes, our walk, our awkward smile. Psychologists call this the "spotlight effect" — our tendency to overestimate how much attention other people pay to our appearance or behavior. In truth, the bright light we feel is mostly in our own head.

The idea was first tested in 1999 by Thomas Gilovich and Kenneth Savitsky at Cornell University. In their now-classic study, college students were asked to put on a T-shirt printed with the face of an outdated, slightly ridiculous celebrity, then walk into a room already occupied by five strangers. Asked afterward how many people had noticed the shirt, the wearers guessed that about half the room had seen it. When the researchers checked with the five strangers, however, only about one in ten could actually say what was on the shirt. The gap between what we fear others notice and what they truly register is, again and again, far wider than we imagine.

Why does this happen? The first reason is a quiet bias toward ourselves. We experience our own thoughts and feelings from the inside, so it is easy to mistake our private drama for a public event. Because we sit at the center of our own mental world, we naturally assume we are also the center of everyone else's. In reality, the people around us are usually busy narrating their own lives — they, too, are standing under their own imagined spotlights.

The second reason is what researchers name the "illusion of transparency": we wrongly believe our inner states leak out for all to see. When we feel nervous, we are certain the trembling hands and the blush are obvious to everyone, when in fact most observers notice far less than we fear. Our private anxiety feels public, though it rarely is. We feel laid bare, yet the people nearby mostly see an ordinary face, not the storm we sense inside.

The good news is that the effect can be softened. Remind yourself that others' attention is, on average, about half of what you suppose. Before a speech, shift your gaze to the wallpaper or the color of someone's shoes; breathe slowly and tell yourself that the room is probably as nervous as you are. None of this means your feelings are unreal — only that the audience is smaller than it looks. Learning to step out of the glare is not about caring less, but about seeing yourself, finally, at human scale.

  1. What did Gilovich and Savitsky's 1999 study find about the T-shirt experiment?A. Wearers thought about half the room noticed their shirt, but far fewer actually did.B. Most strangers in the room could easily name the celebrity on the shirt.C. The wearers correctly guessed how many people had seen the shirt.D. Subjects were told in advance which room they would enter.
  2. What can be inferred about why we so often feel watched?A. Most people are genuinely interested in our small mistakes.B. Our feelings are usually written clearly on our faces.C. We wrongly assume others can see our inner unease, and we overestimate how much they notice us.D. The effect appears mainly during public speaking and nowhere else.
  3. What is the author's attitude toward the spotlight effect?A. Fearful, as if it were a dangerous mental illness.B. Dismissive, arguing that it has no real effect on teenagers.C. Envious of people who happen to suffer from it.D. Reassuring and explanatory, presenting it as a common, manageable bias.
  4. What is the main idea of the passage?A. To teach readers how to become confident public speakers.B. To explain the spotlight effect — why we overestimate others' attention — and how to ease it.C. To prove that Cornell University trained the best psychologists.D. To warn readers against wearing embarrassing T-shirts in public.

Q5 答案:A

第2段"the wearers guessed that about half the room had seen it"与"only about one in ten could actually say what was on the shirt"直接说明:穿者自估约半数注意到,实际仅约十分之一看清,A 两项均吻合。

需综合第3段"bias toward ourselves / assume we are the center of everyone else's"与第4段"illusion of transparency / wrongly believe our inner states leak out",推出:我们既高估他人对自己的关注,又误以为内心不安会"泄露"被看见,故常觉被注视。

The good news… can be softened""Remind yourself…""Learning to step out… at human scale"以安抚、释然、可操作的语气把效应呈现为"常见且可调节的偏差",D(宽慰且具解释性)最贴合;A/B/C 均与释然、可管理的基调相反。

The gap between what we fear others notice and what they truly register is… wider than we imagine"需拆主语从句。

When I was in junior high, the strap of my favorite schoolbag ____(1)____ one rainy morning. Mother pointed me to a small cobbler's stand at the alley corner, where an old man called Zhou ____(2)____ alone among piles of worn shoes. I handed him the bag, half ____(3)____ he would refuse such a small job. He only smiled, took it, and began to work with a ____(4)____ most people no longer have.

His hands, rough and marked by age, his apron faded and tools worn smooth, moved with a calm that seemed to ____(5)____ the noisy street outside. While he stitched, he told me he had mended shoes in this alley for over thirty years. "Things worth keeping," he said, "deserve the ____(6)____ to be fixed well." A neighbor dropped by, left a pair of boots, and ____(7)____ without rushing — everyone here knew Zhou would take his time.

The repair took longer than I expected, yet I did not ____(8)____. Watching him, I understood that his slowness was not laziness but a kind of ____(9)____ for the objects and the people who owned them. When he ____(10)____ the bag back, the strap was stronger than before, and he ____(11)____ a fair price far below what I had feared. The afternoon light slanted through the alley, and for a while the noisy city seemed far away.

On the way home, I realized the lesson was not about a bag. In a world that ____(12)____ everything to be fast and disposable, Zhou chose to ____(13)____ what others would throw away.

空 (1) 答案:A

干扰项:B fell(掉)/C opened(开)/D faded(褪色)均不能表达"带子坏了要修"这一起因。

干扰项:A hoping(希望他拒)语义反;C certain(确信他会拒)过于绝对且后文"他接过"打脸;D pleased(高兴他拒)不符。

干扰项:A speed(速度)/B strength(力气)/C skill(技艺)中,speed 与慢工主题相反,strength/skill 虽可但不如 patience 贴"不慌不忙"。

值得保留的东西"理应被好好修好",right(权利、理应)最贴"deserve the right to be fixed well"的尊重语气。

干扰项:A money(钱)/B tool(工具)/D plan(计划)代入后语义不通,偏离"物有所值、值得被善待"。

空 (7) 答案:A

邻居放下靴子后"离开"而不催,left(离开)与"without rushing / knew Zhou would take his time"衔接,写出街坊的信任。

干扰项:A worry(担心)/B understand(理解)/C care(在乎)中,worry/care 代入"did not worry/care"也通但弱于 mind 的"不介意等待";此处 mind 最自然。

干扰项:A pity(怜悯)/C anger(愤怒)/D fear(恐惧)均与"慢工出细活"的敬重基调冲突。

干扰项:A threw(扔)/B pushed(推)/D drew(拉)都破坏郑重归还的语气。

空 (11) 答案:A

干扰项:B offered(主动给价,主语应是顾客)/C refused(拒收)/D borrowed(借)均不合"匠人报价"语境。

干扰项:A lost(失去)/B hid(隐藏)/D broke(打破)均反向,不能表达"小摊承载尊严"。

空 (15) 答案:A

干扰项:B take(带走)/C keep(保留)/D find(找到)均不能表达"注入温暖"的正向动作。

难度提示:15 空覆盖近义辨析(broke/fell、worked/sat、fearing/certain、patience/skill、quiet/match、right/money、left/waited、respect/pity、handed/threw、asked/offered、save/ignore、stood for/lost、bring/take)、固定搭配(deserve the right、without rushing、handed back、far below)、语境推理(fearing、mind、want、throw away);无"见搭配即选"的送分题,须回语境与全文"慢工惜物"主线判断。

② 完形填空——"近义辨析+语境色彩"双锁:空 (4)(patience vs speed/strength/skill)须看全文"slowness / take his time"色彩;空 (11)(asked 在此表"索价")须辨清主语是匠人而非顾客,避免误选 offered。
