Arno聊起化学时有一种超越年龄的沉稳。但三年前,他确实是公立学校里那种“不被看好”的孩子——严重偏科,总成绩班级倒数。

转折发生在2023年,他转入了朝阳凯文。

来到朝阳凯文,

一个绝对正确的选择 

“当时选择朝阳凯文,是因为听说这边有同学申到了帝国理工。帝国理工也是我的梦想。”

刚转来时Arno是忐忑的,公立校紧张高压的氛围还历历在目,而且无法专注学习自己热爱的科目。结果不到一周,他发现:“这边的师生都很友善,我们很快处成了朋友。”包容友好的校园环境让Arno变得更加自信和阳光。

Arno的化学特长,在过去的评价体系里被简单粗暴地定义为“偏科”。但在朝阳凯文,这恰恰成为了他学业规划的起点和核心优势。

在共同决策下,Arno选择了A-Level课程。它最大的特点是:允许学生只选三门自己最擅长且与未来专业相关的学科,进行深入学习。 对Arno来说,这几乎是为他量身定做的课程。

幸福徜徉在化学海洋里的Arno

一个人到一群人,

 可被放大和分享的热爱  

Arno对化学的兴趣,始于七岁那年。

一次偶然,他在新闻里看到非洲埃博拉病毒疫情的报道。画面上,那些表面布满绿色蠕虫状结构的病毒,极其微小,却能引发极高的死亡率,席卷整个社区陷入瘫痪。

一个年幼的孩子对此感到震撼:“这样一个小小的病毒,怎么做到让人痛不欲生的?有没有办法救他们?”

这粒好奇种子就这样埋进了Arno的心中,也让化学成为了他的热爱与追求。而在朝阳凯文,Arno遇到了几位同样热爱化学的同学。“我们一起交流知识,一起准备竞赛,一起建社团。”

在化学老师Alice的协助下,化学竞赛社成立了。这是朝阳凯文A-Level课程之外的学术延伸——学校鼓励学生在课堂之外深入探索自己热爱的领域,并提供平台和资源。

      在化学竞赛社里,Arno把知识分享出去,也从别的同学那里学到新的东西。老师也会给他们讲解竞赛中遇到的难点。些一起讨论、争辩又豁然开朗的时刻,点燃了他对化学更深的热爱。

朝阳凯文丰富的校园活动,也给了Arno更多发展热爱的机会,他最喜欢的活动是科学展。科学教育从小学贯通到高中,科学展是学校从小学到高中延续多年的传统——学生们在展板上呈现自己的研究课题,用展台、实验和讲解,把课堂上学到的知识变成可触摸、可对话的发现。

Arno和同学们分工合作——“我擅长化学,有的同学擅长物理和数学,各取所长,一起做展板。”

      他在展台上展示药物的合成路径,讲本科级别的内容。“不少同学都对此感兴趣,咨询我化学知识,我就给他们科普,或者说是预习一下大学内容。”

从一个人闷头钻研,到一群人并肩探索——Arno在朝阳凯文渐渐明白:热爱不是一座孤岛,它会在分享中扎根,在碰撞中生长。

圆梦帝国理工,

专业功底+坚守热爱+社会责任 

朝阳凯文的三年,Arno不仅找到了同行的伙伴,更在学校的支持下,一步步将热爱淬炼成扎实的专业能力。

      坚毅,是他与化学相处的方式。

      课堂之外,Arno把大量时间花在了“往前学”上。他自学了本科级别的化学内容。为了系统学习药物化合物合成相关知识,他还专门研读了格雷厄姆·L·帕特里克所著的《药物化学导论》,不断夯实专业理论基础。

没有外力逼迫,是自主探索的愿望, 单纯想获得更多知识——这种对自我的不断锤炼,正是朝阳凯文八大价值观中“坚毅”最真实的写照。

      2023年,他在肿瘤医院做志愿者,近距离接触癌症患者,亲眼目睹了疾病带来的恐惧与无助。那份触动,让他坚定了投身癌症研究的决心。

2024年,他参加剑桥大学夏令营,在理论课程与实验室实操中学习药物化学、核磁共振、薛定谔方程等前沿知识,并亲手操作实验设备。这段经历加深了他对药物化学的认知,也让他坚定了赴英深造的决心。

从医院到实验室,他用行动将专业兴趣与社会责任相连。

        A-Level大考结束后,Arno在升学指导老师的指导下,投入了一场长达三四个月的“文书攻坚战”,光草稿就改了六遍。每一份竞赛成绩、每一次科研经历、每一段志愿服务的点滴,被串联成一个有温度的、关于热爱的故事。

 在帝国理工的面试中,两位面试官向Arno提出了一个本科有机化学级别的问题——羟醛缩合的机理。“当时他们让我画图解答,”Arno回忆道,“我不光完成了所有机理步骤,还主动提出了共振式的概念。”

       他没有刻意炫耀,只是把自己真正理解的东西,清晰地、有条理地呈现了出来。但两位面试官脸上掠过的惊讶,Arno捕捉到了。

       2026年春天,帝国理工学院化学与药物化学(本硕连读)的录取通知书如约而至。

       纵观Arno的成长历程:从七岁萌发对化学的兴趣,到持续深耕竞赛、广泛学习、参与科研与公益实践,他始终围绕化学领域稳步前行。

而朝阳凯文所做的是,看见这份热爱,并为他提供了扎根的土壤、生长的平台、起飞的跑道

        Arno也用行动证明:坚守热爱、脚踏实地、全面准备,就能让梦想照进现实。

Graduate Interview | From a "Subject-Imbalanced" Student to Imperial College London: How He Turned His Passion into Confidence at CKWA

Who is Arno?

A young boy who was "struck" by chemistry at the age of seven;

A child who once struggled with severe subject imbalance in a public school, carrying immense psychological pressure every day;

A learner who, after coming to CKWA, found his own path through the A-Level programme, with ample time to dive deep into what he truly loves;

A Class of 2026 graduate holding an offer from Imperial College London for an integrated master's degree.

What follows is an inspiring story of a passion that was seen, nurtured, and lifted.

When Arno talks about chemistry, there is a composure beyond his years. But three years ago, he was exactly the kind of student who was "written off" in public school—severely imbalanced in his subjects, ranking near the bottom of his class.

The turning point came in 2023, when he transferred to CKWA.

Coming to CKWA: An Absolutely Right Decision

"I chose CKWA because I heard that a student here had been accepted to Imperial College London. Imperial has always been my dream."

When he first arrived, Arno was apprehensive. The tense, high-pressure atmosphere of public school was still fresh in his mind, and he had never been able to focus on the subjects he truly loved. But within less than a week, he discovered: "The teachers and students here are all very friendly. We became friends quickly."

The inclusive and welcoming campus environment made Arno more confident and outgoing.

Arno's strength in chemistry used to be simply labelled as "subject imbalance" under the old evaluation system. But at CKWA, that very strength became the starting point and core advantage of his academic planning.

Through a collaborative decision-making process, Arno chose the A-Level programme. Its greatest feature is that it allows students to select just three subjects they are best at and most relevant to their future aspirations, for in-depth study. For Arno, this was practically a curriculum tailor-made for him.

From One Person to a Community: A Passion That Can Be Amplified and Shared

Arno's interest in chemistry began at the age of seven.

By chance, he saw a news report about the Ebola virus outbreak in Africa. On the screen, the virus—covered in green, worm-like structures on its surface—was incredibly small yet could cause extremely high mortality rates, plunging entire communities into paralysis.

As a young child, he was struck by a question: "How can such a tiny virus cause so much suffering? Is there any way to save those people?"

That seed of curiosity was planted in Arno's heart, and chemistry became his passion and pursuit. At CKWA, Arno met several classmates who shared the same love for chemistry.

"We exchanged knowledge, prepared for competitions together, and started a club together."

With the help of chemistry teacher Alice, the Chemistry Competition Club was established. This is an academic extension beyond CKWA's A-Level programme—the school encourages students to explore their passions beyond the classroom and provides the platforms and resources to do so.

In the Chemistry Competition Club, Arno shared his knowledge with others and also learned new things from his peers. Teachers would also guide them through challenging problems encountered in competitions. Those moments of discussion, debate, and sudden clarity ignited an even deeper love for chemistry within him.

Arno has produced an impressive record of achievements in major international chemistry competitions, demonstrating his academic strength in the field:

•2025 UK Chemistry Olympiad – Gold Award

•2024 UK Chemistry Olympiad – Gold Award

•2024 Junior Canadian Chemistry Olympiad – National Top Gold Award

•2024 Cambridge Chemistry Challenge – Gold Award

CKWA's rich campus activities have also given Arno more opportunities to pursue his passions. His favourite event is the Science Fair.

Science education runs continuously from primary through to high school, and the Science Fair is a long-standing tradition at the school—students present their research projects on display boards, using exhibits, experiments, and explanations to turn what they have learned in the classroom into tangible, conversational discoveries.

Arno and his classmates divided the work: "I'm good at chemistry; some classmates are good at physics and maths. We each played to our strengths and worked on the display boards together."

He presented the synthesis pathways of pharmaceuticals on his booth, explaining content at an undergraduate level. "Many students were interested and asked me about chemistry. I would explain it to them—or you could say I was giving them a preview of university-level content."

From working alone in quiet study to exploring side by side with a group, Arno gradually came to understand at CKWA: passion is not an isolated island—it takes root in sharing and grows through collaboration.

Realising the Dream of Imperial College London: Professional Competence + Dedication to Passion + Social Responsibility

During his three years at CKWA, Arno not only found like-minded companions but also, with the school's support, gradually refined his passion into solid professional capability.

Persistence is how he engages with chemistry.

Outside the classroom, Arno devoted much of his time to "learning ahead." He taught himself undergraduate-level chemistry content. To systematically study the synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds, he also read Graham L. Patrick's An Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry, continuously strengthening his theoretical foundation.

There was no external pressure—it was the desire for independent exploration, the simple wish to acquire more knowledge. This continuous self-challenge is the truest reflection of "Persistence," one of CKWA's eight core values.

In 2023, he volunteered at a cancer hospital, coming into close contact with cancer patients and witnessing first-hand the fear and helplessness brought by the disease. That experience moved him deeply and strengthened his resolve to devote himself to cancer research.

In 2024, he participated in a Cambridge University summer programme, where he studied medicinal chemistry, nuclear magnetic resonance, the Schrödinger equation, and other cutting-edge topics through theoretical courses and hands-on laboratory work, operating experimental equipment himself. This experience deepened his understanding of medicinal chemistry and solidified his determination to pursue further studies in the UK.

From the hospital to the laboratory, he used his actions to connect his professional interests with social responsibility.

After his A-Level exams, under the guidance of his university counsellor, Arno devoted himself to an intensive "personal statement battle" that lasted three to four months, revising his draft six times. Every competition result, every research experience, and every volunteer effort was woven together into a warm story of passion.

During his Imperial College interview, the two interviewers posed a question at the undergraduate organic chemistry level—the mechanism of aldol condensation.

"They asked me to illustrate it with diagrams," Arno recalled. "I not only completed all the mechanistic steps but also proactively introduced the concept of resonance."

He wasn't trying to show off; he simply presented what he truly understood, clearly and logically. But the flicker of surprise on the interviewers' faces did not escape Arno's notice.

In the spring of 2026, the offer from Imperial College London for Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry (MSci) arrived as promised.

Looking back at Arno's journey: from sparking his interest in chemistry at age seven, to continuously deepening his knowledge through competitions, extensive self-study, research, and public welfare practices—he has always moved forward steadily within the field of chemistry.

And what CKWA did was to see that passion and provide it with the soil to take root, the platform to grow, and the runway to take off.

Arno has proven through his actions that: staying true to your passion, staying grounded, and being fully prepared can turn your dreams into reality.

His Voice – A Message to Younger Students

At the end of the interview, we asked him: "Do you have any advice for younger students?"

He paused for a moment, then said with conviction:

"I hope everyone will firmly choose the subject they truly love, and bravely explore the areas beyond the classroom that genuinely interest them—even if it's difficult."
