Some people argue that studying the past is an unnecessary use of time and money, and that society should focus instead on solving the problems of the present. While I accept that today’s issues are extremely urgent, I do not fully agree with this view, because research into the past can still provide important guidance for modern society.

Admittedly, it is understandable why some people believe that historical research should not be a priority. Many countries are now facing serious problems, such as climate change, unemployment, public health risks and rising living costs. These issues directly affect people’s daily lives, so governments need to spend money on practical solutions. For example, investing in clean energy or medical services can bring clear and immediate benefits to the public. By contrast, some historical projects, especially those with little connection to modern life, may seem less useful and even wasteful when public budgets are limited.

However, this does not mean that researching the past has no value. History often helps people understand the causes of today’s problems. For instance, studying past economic crises can show how poor financial decisions, weak regulation and public fear may damage the whole economy. This knowledge can help governments avoid similar mistakes when dealing with modern financial risks. Similarly, research into past wars and social conflicts reminds people of the dangers of extreme nationalism, inequality and failed communication. Without such understanding, society may repeat the same errors in different forms.

Moreover, the past is closely connected with culture and identity. Historical research allows people to understand where their traditions, languages and social values come from. This is especially important in a globalised world, where many local cultures are under pressure from international media and business. If people lose interest in their own history, they may also lose a sense of belonging and cultural confidence. Therefore, studying the past is not only about old events, but also about helping present and future generations understand themselves better.

In conclusion, although modern problems deserve serious attention and immediate action, researching the past should not be dismissed as a waste. A balanced society should solve today’s problems while also learning from history, because both are necessary for long-term development.
