THE COCONUT PALM

For millennia, the coconut has been central to the lives of Polynesian and Asian peoples. On the so-called ‘coconut islands’ of the Pacific, it is the source of food, of drink, of building material, of rope, of fuel and even of currency. In India, the coconut palm has been worshipped as a tree of life, and in many cultures, it has a role in religious ceremonies.

The coconut palm has a smooth, slender, grey trunk, up to 30 metres tall. This makes an excellent source of timber for house-building and furniture-making. The trunk is hollow at the centre, and is extremely strong, even though it has no branches. At the top of the tree is a crown of large, pinnate leaves, which may be up to five metres long. These leaves are used for thatching roofs, and for making baskets, mats and hats.

The coconut fruit itself has a number of different layers. The outermost layer is a smooth, green skin. Inside this is a thick layer of fibrous husk, which is used to make rope and matting. Beneath the husk is the hard, brown shell, which protects the inner part of the fruit. Inside the shell is the edible white flesh, called copra when dried, and a clear liquid known as coconut water.
