Falling leaves and cold winds show the arrival of another season. In China, November 7 is lidong. It is a Chinese word for one of the 24 solar terms (节气). It means the beginning of winter.
To welcome lidong, people have many colorful customs that light up the cold days. One of the most popular customs is to have a big meal. Winter is believed to be a season for keeping food fresh. Eating well helps people save enough energy to beat the cold in winter, and prepare for the growth in the coming spring. In the north, people prefer eating dumplings. The Chinese word for dumpling, jiao (饺), has a similar pronunciation as the word “change”, jiao (交). Eating dumplings means celebrating the change of autumn to winter. While in the south, eating chicken, duck and fish is common.
From history, lidong was also a time for people to keep vegetables. There were not many fresh vegetables to eat during winter. So, around lidong, some people in the north began to keep vegetables like cabbages and green onions in a cellar underground. Whenit was time for cooking, fathers went down with a basket tied to one end of a rope (绳子). Children were happy to wait beside the cellar holding the other end of the rope. When fathers filled the basket with vegetables, children helped to pull it out.
However, nowadays some of the customs have disappeared. Most people buy fresh vegetables in the supermarket. Instead, new winter customs are born in certain places. In Harbin, experienced swimmers choose to swim in the winter waters during lidong. How cold it must be!

If you were asked what your body is made of, probably you would say that it is made of flesh(肉体) and bones and covered with skin. You also know something about the blood which flows through it, and that there is a very important part which we call the brain.
But the flesh and the bones make up the largest part of the body, and there is a good deal to be learned about them. You know the general appearance of both flesh and bone from the parts of animals which you see in the butcher’s shop.
Bone is hard, and of a white color; indeed, it looks more like a piece of wood or stone than a part of a living animal. But bone is a real part of the living body, and it grows and is nourished (滋养)just as the body is. If a man breaks the bone of his arm or his leg, it is firmly bound up, to prevent the broken parts from moving out of the proper places, and in time then bone grows together again and becomes quite strong.
The bones are fastened together by various kinds of joints(关节). They form the framework of the body, and give it strength to retain its proper shape. This framework is called the skeleton(骨架). Some animals, such as worms and slugs, have no skeleton; and others, such as shellfish, have a kind of hard covering or skeleton outside.
The most important part of the skeleton is the backbone. It is so important that naturalists divide all animals into two classes,--- those which have a backbone and those which have none. All the higher animals, including man, have a backbone, or vertebral column as it is called. They are therefore called vertebrate (脊椎的)animals. The others are called invertebrate animals.

Many people enjoy seeing busy little squirrels running around a park.43 Without protection, the UK’s red squirrels could disappear in just ten years.
The main reason is that people brought gray squirrels to the UK in the 1890s. They are larger and stronger.44 As a result, the country's red squirrels are hard to survive.
Another problem that gray squirrels have brought with them is the squirrel pox virus(松鼠痘病毒).They can carry this virus without any effects on themselves, but it kills red squirrels. It causes sores(疮)around faces and feet and soon the red squirrels can't see and eat,and finally they lose their lives.45
People in the UK love their red squirrels, so they are doing their best to save them. They come up with a few ideas.46 With fewer gray squirrels to compete with or spread the virus, the red squirrels will have a better chance. Besides, the trees in the UK will also be healthier, since gray squirrels sometimes hurt trees.
Another idea is to use gray squirrels' natural enemies to cut down their numbers. For example, pine martens(松貂) mainly hunt gray squirrels, not red squirrels. Scientists are putting pine martens in the areas with too many gray squirrels. Although it might seem cruel, this helps keep the environment in balance.47 With these plans, people in the UK hope their red squirrels will make a comeback.
A. Different animals can live together better in this way. B. They're also better at competing for food and space than red squirrels. C. It might surprise you, then, to learn that some squirrels are in danger. D. One is to stop the gray squirrels from having more babies. E. People in the UK like red squirrels better than gray squirrles. F. Animalscientists are worried that these problems are having a serious influence. |
