Chinese zongzi is the representative food of the Dragon Boat Festival. It is a kind of glutinous rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves with various fillings inside, and it has a history of more than two thousand years in China.
In Chinese culture, zongzi is closely connected with the patriotic poet Qu Yuan. It is said that people threw zongzi into the river to prevent fish and shrimp from eating Qu Yuan’s body after he jumped into the Miluo River. Beyond this historical story, zongzi also stands for family reunion and good wishes. During the Dragon Boat Festival, families get together to make and eat zongzi, and send zongzi to relatives and friends to express their love and care.
The origin of zongzi can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period. At that time, people wrapped rice in leaves to sacrifice to gods and ancestors. In the Han Dynasty, zongzi began to be associated with the Dragon Boat Festival. In the Tang and Song Dynasties, the types of zongzi became more diverse, with more fillings added such as red beans and dates. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the custom of eating zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival became more popular all over the country, and different regions developed their own unique styles of zongzi.
Zongzi has many different regional styles in China. Southern-style zongzi, represented by Cantonese zongzi, is famous for its rich fillings, such as pork, egg yolk and mushrooms. Northern-style zongzi is mostly sweet, with fillings like red bean paste, jujube and sweet rice. Hunan-style zongzi is known for its spicy taste, which is loved by people who like spicy food. Sichuan-style zongzi combines the characteristics of spicy and numb, with unique local flavors.
Most zongzi are made of glutinous rice, which is sticky and not easy to digest. Also, some meat zongzi have high fat and calorie content. To eat zongzi healthily, it is recommended to eat it with some sour foods like vinegar or pickles, which can help with digestion. Paper cutting is one of the most traditional folk arts in China, which has a history of more than 1,500 years. This art form is simple but full of creativity, and it has been loved by people for generations. However, with the development of modern society, paper cutting is facing the problem of being forgotten by young people. In recent years, Chinese artists and cultural workers have been trying their best to protect and inherit this precious intangible cultural heritage, and the government has also given a lot of support to the development of paper cutting art. In 2006, Chinese paper cutting was included in the first batch of China's intangible cultural heritage list, and in 2009, it was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.
Most paper cutting works are made of red paper, because red stands for joy and good luck in Chinese culture. The tools for paper cutting are very simple—usually a pair of scissors or a carving knife. First, the artist draws the pattern on the red paper, and then cuts or carves the paper according to the pattern. The patterns of paper cutting are various, including animals, plants, figures, auspicious symbols and traditional stories. Skilled paper cutting artists can cut complex patterns without drawing them first, and their hands move quickly and accurately.
Paper cutting artists not only need to have good hand skills, but also need to have a deep understanding of Chinese traditional culture. Because most paper cutting patterns are closely related to traditional customs, festivals and stories, only by understanding the cultural connotation can they create works with soul. Many paper cutting artists are also willing to teach this skill to others, hoping that more people can learn and inherit it.
Zhang Li is a young paper cutting artist who has made great contributions to the inheritance of this art. She has innovated the traditional paper cutting art by combining it with modern elements, such as adding cartoon images and modern life scenes to the paper cutting patterns. She also uses different colors of paper instead of just red paper to make the works more colorful. What’s more, she has opened online courses to teach paper cutting to people all over the country. “Paper cutting is a treasure of Chinese culture. We need to make it keep up with the times so that more young people will love it,” said Zhang Li. “It’s our responsibility to pass on this traditional art to the next generation.”

( )24. We can learn the ______ of making paper cutting works from paragraph 2.

A 14-year-old girl in a remote mountain village has made a small library for the children in her village, using the old books she collected from all over the country. She and the other children in the village had never read any extracurricular books before, because the village is far from the city and there is no bookstore or library there.
The villagers call her “the Little Book Angel” because of her kindness and cleverness. “I saw that the younger children in the village only had textbooks to read, and they were very curious about the outside world. So I thought of collecting old books to make a library for them, and I did it,” the girl said.
Since the village is very poor, the girl started by asking her teachers and relatives for old books. Then she posted her wish on the Internet with the help of a volunteer teacher, and many kind people from all over the country sent her old books. The girl used an old wooden house in the village, which was left by a villager who moved to the city, as the library. It took the girl more than six months to collect enough books and set up the library, and she met many difficulties during this period. Some people thought she was wasting time, and the wooden house was broken and needed a lot of cleaning. But the girl never gave up, and finally her hard work paid off. The small library has more than 2,000 books now, and it has become the happiest place for the children in the village. My Favourite Art Form
My favourite art form is paper cutting. It’s a traditional Chinese folk art with a history of over 1,500 years. It’s made by cutting red paper into different patterns like flowers and animals, which stand for good luck.
I like it because it’s not only beautiful but also full of Chinese culture. Every pattern has a special meaning. I learned paper cutting from my grandma last year. It makes me patient and careful when I cut the paper.
Paper cutting also lets me know more about Chinese traditional culture. I often make paper cutting works for my friends and family on festivals. It brings them joy and makes me proud of our traditional art. I will keep learning it and pass it on to more people.

Lina had heard the old lady’s husband passed away months before, and she had no family nearby. Without a second thought, Lina __2__ her gloves, walked over, and asked if she could help tidy the garden. Mrs Henderson’s eyes filled with tears, and she nodded __3__.
The work was harder than Lina expected. Weeds grew through the cracks of the path, and rose bushes had grown wild. Halfway through, her back ached, and she wanted to __4__. She spent the whole Saturday and Sunday morning on the garden, __5__ her friend’s invitation to the cinema.
By Sunday noon, the garden looked __6__. The path was clear, the roses were pruned, and a few colourful pots Lina brought from home lined the steps. Mrs Henderson walked out slowly, her hand __7__ her mouth in surprise. “I haven’t seen this garden look this beautiful since my husband was alive,” she said, her voice shaking.
That afternoon, Mrs Henderson told Lina stories about her husband, who had planted the roses for her on their 20th wedding anniversary. She also shared her life as a teacher, the __8__ she had for travelling, and the loneliness she’d felt lately. For Lina, the garden wasn’t just a pile of pulled weeds—it was a __9__ to a new friend.
Months later, they still meet every weekend. Lina helps with small chores, and Mrs Henderson teaches her to bake her famous apple pie. Lina says she’s learned a huge __10__: “Kindness isn’t about a big, one-time action. It’s about the small, __11__ things we do for each other, every single day.”
She also found that helping others brought her more joy than any weekend party ever could. Her classmates heard about what she did, and soon, a small volunteer group __12__ in the community. They help elderly neighbours with shopping, garden work, and just sit and chat with those who feel lonely.
Mrs Henderson says her life has been completely turned around. “I used to __13__ the quiet days, wondering how I’d get through them. Now, I look forward to every weekend, to seeing Lina and hearing about her school life. She’s given me my __14__ back.”

For teenagers, pulling all-nighters to study for exams or staying up late scrolling through short videos has become a common habit. But a new study published in Journal of Youth and Adolescence in 2024 has found that this habit may be doing far more harm than just making you tired in class the next day.
The study followed 850 middle school students across China over two years, tracking their sleep patterns and school performance. Researchers divided the students into two groups: those who slept regularly for 8-10 hours every night, even on weekends, and those who had irregular sleep schedules, often sleeping less than 6 hours on school nights and catching up on weekends.
The results were surprising. The regular sleep group scored 15% higher on average in their final exams, especially in memory-based subjects like English and Chinese. More importantly, they showed better ability to focus in class and control their emotions. The irregular sleep group, however, was 3 times more likely to report feeling anxious and having trouble remembering new words and passages.
Dr Wang, the lead researcher, explained why this happens. “When you sleep, your brain is not resting—it’s organizing and storing all the information you learned that day. If you don’t get enough regular sleep, your brain can’t keep the information properly. It’s like putting books into a library without sorting them—you’ll never find them when you need them.”
Many students think they can make up for lost sleep on weekends, but the study found this doesn’t work. “Your body has a biological clock. Changing it every weekend is like flying to a different time zone twice a week. It confuses your brain and body, and the damage can’t be fixed in just two days,” said Dr Wang.
The study also gave a simple suggestion: for middle school students, the best way to improve grades isn’t to study more hours—it’s to sleep regularly for 8-10 hours every night. Even 30 minutes of extra regular sleep can make a big difference in your study and mental health.

The winter wind blew hard across the Yancheng Yellow Sea Wetland, but 14-year-old Zhou Yu didn’t feel cold at all. She held her telescope tightly, her eyes fixed on a group of red-crowned cranes walking slowly in the reeds. Beside her, her classmates and teacher wrote down the number of the cranes in their notebooks, their breath turning into white fog in the cold air.
It was Zhou Yu’s first winter as a wetland volunteer. She grew up in a village near the wetland, but she had never really paid attention to the cranes before. Everything changed when her science teacher took the class to a wetland protection show last autumn. She saw a video about how the wetland is the winter home for more than 600 red-crowned cranes, half of the world’s total population. She also learned that the cranes are facing dangers from pollution and human activities.
“I felt so shocked. I grew up here, but I knew almost nothing about these beautiful birds and how important the wetland is,” Zhou Yu said. That day, she signed up for the school’s wetland protection club, and decided to do something to help.
The winter volunteer work was not easy. They had to get up at 5 a.m. every day, when the sky was still dark, and walk 3 kilometres through the reeds to the monitoring points. The ground was muddy and slippery, and the winter wind was so strong that it could blow you over. Sometimes, they had to stand in the cold for hours, waiting for the cranes to appear.
But Zhou Yu never complained. The best moment for her was when she saw a family of cranes walking with their two chicks. “They were so small and cute, following their parents step by step. I suddenly realized that all our hard work was for them, to make sure they can have a safe home here every winter,” she said.
She and her classmates also gave talks to the villagers living near the wetland, telling them not to throw litter into the water and to keep a safe distance from the cranes. They made colourful posters and put them up in the village primary schools, teaching younger kids about wetland protection.
Now, Zhou Yu’s biggest wish is to become a wetland ranger when she grows up. “The wetland is my home, and the cranes are our neighbours. I want to spend my whole life protecting them, so that every winter, the sky of Yancheng will always be filled with the shadows of flying cranes,” she said.
23.What made Zhou Yu decide to join the wetland protection club?

D.The volunteer work her classmates did.

A.The winter volunteer work required a lot of hard work and patience.
B.Zhou Yu and her classmates often got lost in the reeds.
C.The cranes always appeared as soon as the volunteers arrived.

One Saturday morning, Tom Sawyer was told by his aunt Polly to paint the fence of the house. It was a long, wooden fence, and Tom hated the boring work. He sat down on a stone, feeling sad, and wished he could play with his friends in the town. All his friends would go swimming or play games that day, and Tom had to do the terrible painting job alone.
He started to paint slowly, and after an hour, he had only finished a small part of the fence. Soon, he saw his friend Ben Rogers coming down the street, eating an apple and singing happily. Ben was going swimming, and Tom knew he would laugh at him for having to work.
Tom thought quickly. He didn’t look sad anymore. Instead, he painted the fence with a big smile, and looked like he was having the greatest fun in the world. Ben stopped and watched him for a minute. “Hey, Tom! What are you doing?” he asked. “Painting the fence,” Tom said, without looking up, and painted even more carefully. “Is it fun?” Ben asked. Tom put down his brush and looked at the fence. “Fun? Well, it’s not just work. I don’t think every boy gets a chance to paint a fence like this.”
Ben was surprised. He had never thought painting a fence could be interesting. He looked at the apple in his hand, then at Tom. “Can I have a try?” he asked. Tom shook his head. “Aunt Polly is very careful about this fence. She doesn’t want anyone else to paint it. She says I’m the only one who can do it right.” Ben begged and begged. Finally, Tom agreed. “Okay, Ben. But you have to be very careful.”
Ben took the brush and started to paint, and Tom sat down on the stone and ate Ben’s apple. Soon, more friends came by. They all wanted to paint the fence, and Tom let them—one by one. Some gave him a piece of candy, some gave him a small toy, and some gave him a marble. By the end of the day, the whole fence was painted three times, and Tom had a bag full of small gifts.
Aunt Polly came out and saw the beautiful fence. She was so surprised that she gave Tom a big cake and allowed him to go out and play with his friends. Tom smiled to himself. He had learned a great lesson: ____.

37.____ You don't need to read a whole book every day. Even 10 minutes of English reading before bed or during your break between classes is enough. The key is to do it every day, not to read a lot in one day. If you keep reading 10 minutes a day, that's more than 60 hours a year.
Choose books that you are really interested in. 38. ____ If you love sports, read an English magazine about your favourite football player. If you like animals, read an English story about a pet. You don't have to read the classics if you don't like them. The best book for you is the one you want to read, not the one your teacher says you should read.
