In the era of globalisation, efficient international business relies on several key factors. Some argue that affordable and rapid transportation is indispensable, while others contend that advanced technology plays a greater role. Both views have merit, but I believe that technology has become the primary driver, although transportation remains essential.
Proponents of transportation point out that physical movement of goods is the backbone of international trade. Without cost‑effective and speedy shipping or air freight, perishable products such as food and medicine would not reach overseas markets, and just‑in‑time supply chains would collapse. For industries like manufacturing, retail, and agriculture, reducing transportation costs directly increases profit margins and competitiveness. Thus, for many traditional sectors, cheap and fast transport is indeed a prerequisite for success.
On the other hand, those who prioritise technology argue that modern digital tools have fundamentally reshaped international business. Advanced communication platforms, cloud computing, and e‑commerce systems enable companies to coordinate globally without moving physical goods. For instance, software firms, consultancies, and financial services rely entirely on technology to serve international clients. Moreover, technology optimises transportation itself through logistics algorithms and tracking systems. Without good technology, even the fastest ships would be inefficient. Therefore, in the knowledge economy, technology is arguably more critical than transport.
In my opinion, while cheap and fast transportation remains vital for goods‑based industries, good technology has become the dominant enabler of modern international business, especially in the service and digital sectors. A successful company must integrate both, but long‑term competitiveness increasingly hinges on technological innovation. Hence, I believe technology is the more important factor overall.
