Plastic pollution is a problem. Some plastic is so strong that it takes more than 400 years to break down before returning safely to the environment. How can we solve this problem? Scientists around the world are working on it. One solution comes from a special kind of bacteria(细菌).
Scientists have known that a kind of bacteria grows on plastic in wastewater and rivers. But no one was sure what it was doing there. A new study finally worked it out. The bacteria are breaking down the plastic for food.
First, this kind of bacteria turns the plastic into pieces. These pieces are still dangerous to the environment, because animals can accidentally swallow them. Luckily, the bacteria then make an enzyme(酶) to break the plastic down even more. Finally, the bacteria eat the carbon atoms(原子) produced by the broken-down plastic.
The bacteria are much too small for us to see. At the same time, they are eating the plastic so slowly that they can’t keep up with all the plastic in the world. “We will work on how to use the same ways to break down plastic faster,” says a scientist.
Fighting plastic pollution needs everyone’s help. For now, we’re one step closer to clear rivers. And it’s all thanks to some helpful, hungry bacteria.
() 1. How does the writer start the topic?

Chinese robots can do plenty of different things. They are now shining in real marathons! On April 19, 2026, the 2ndE-Town half-marathon was held in Beijing. It is a great way to test the robots in a different situation. This helps engineers make them better and encourages companies to develop new robot technologies.
The first traffic robot in Beijing, named “Tianyi”, started its duties during this race. Tianyi completed its first task---to guide runners using clear hand gestures(手势) and a friendly voice. This robot can now direct traffic at crossings and teach people about basic traffic rules. Soon, it will answer common questions.
Another robot named “Flash” did something amazing during this marathon. It finished the race in just 50 minutes and 26 seconds, and even broke the human world of 57 minutes and 20 seconds. This is a big change from last year’s first race. Back then, the winning robot, “Tiangong Ultra”, took more than 2 hours to finish. In that race, most robots just tried to complete the race without falling down. But this year, the robots were built to run much faster.
China is working hard to become a leader in new technologies. With the support of the government, many companies turn their laboratory ideas into real products. This shows how much the technology is improving and how fast China’s robot industry is growing.

This year marks the 31st World Book Day. It is reported there are 158,464,880 books in the world, with about 2.2 million new ones coming out each year.
What You Need to Know . Nine out of 10 people say that their favorite books are the ones they pick out themselves. . People who choose their favorite books read more. . Rereading books help people become better readers and helps understanding. |

Some people prefer to dive into something new while others return to old favorites. Books are like people. Some you meet once and that’s enough. Some you want to get to know better, and whenever you are with them you discover more about them.
Last week, we asked 1000 readers if they should read a book more than once. The pie chart on the left shows the result.
Here are more voices.
Fu Xing, a student |
Books aren’t like films or songs. Reading a book takes time. Why do you waste time on something you’ve already read? If you keep reading the same book, you may lose the chance to learn new or different stories. Even worse, you won’t make progress as a reader. |
Amy, a teacher |
People notice new details and understand the themes differently every time they read a book again. People get more pleasure when rereading, especially as you get older. Reading something at the age of 10 is different from reading it at the age of 15. |
John, a writer |
Instead of rereading something, it’s a good choice to give your book to someone, so they can enjoy it for the first time. You can discuss it later and see what they thought. You might think about the book differently after hearing a fresh opinion. |
Wei Guo, a blogger |
Many people find it hard to choose books that interest them. In this way, it’s better for them to reread the same book than to give up reading. Book lovers say that rereading can bring more comfort and joy. So it doesn’t matter if you’re reading it for the first time or the fifth. |
1. How can people read more?
2. How many people choose to read new books?
3. According to John, what might people do after hearing a fresh opinion?
4. What ideas do Amy and Wei Guo have in common about reading?
5. Will you read a book more than once? Why or why not?

答案范文:
On the road of growth, it’s common to run into problems. Our grades can’t meet our parents’ expectations. Endless stress makes us out of breath. However, staying active helps us solve problems and pushes us to be better.
Last term, I was crazy about online games. Unsurprisingly, my grades fell a lot. Even worse, I lost my parents’ trust and support. To solve the problem, I kept a positive mind and chose to change myself. I made a practical self-improvement plan and stuck to it strictly. Besides, I focused more on my studies and made better use of my time. Every action counted. I made progress gradually.
Instead of avoiding problems, we’d better face them bravely. Besides, we should consider problems as stepping stones and keep trying. May we meet a better self with active thinking and great efforts.
