After their three children grew up and left home, Margaret Thompson and her husband, Kenneth, stretched their legs together on walking holidays in Switzerland. In Interlaken, they would head up the mountain and watch the paragliders (滑翔伞运动员) launch themselves into the sky.Back in town, in a large park, they watched them return to the earth.“Some day I’d love to do that,” Thompson told Kenneth.
But there was always so much to do in Interlaken.Besides, Thompson didn’t know if Kenneth would have enjoyed it.He was not so keen on heights as I was, she said.So she continued to watch the gliders take flight and land.
Kenneth died in 2005.Eleven years later, Thompson finally took to the skies herself, in a paraglider at the age of 80.Although some people get scared while flying, she said she just feels free.Thompson did her second paraglide when she turned 85, and raised nearly £2, 000 for a local charity.
Before leaving Interlaken after her second flight, Thompson asked the organizers about the age limit for paragliding. They said: “Any age, as long as you’re fit.” Thompson, now 86, plans her third flight for when she is 90.
Thompson grew up living above her parents’ shop in Belfast. At 18, she helped in the shop while studying for her music diploma in Stranmillis, south Belfast. She started to teach piano to local children, and at the height of her teaching she gave 70 lessons a week. She still has 15 pupils.“Over the years I’ve had so many that I’m teaching their children now.”
Is she scared of getting older? “Fear? No.People say: ‘Isn’t getting old awful?’ I say: ‘No.You are free to do more of the things that you want to do.’” “People might worry about falling, it being the end of them. But that doesn’t bother me at all. When it’s your time, it’s your time.No matter where you are.” Thompson added.
24.What can we know about Thompson from the first two paragraphs?

About 12% of the total global energy demand comes from heating and cooling homes and businesses.A new study suggests that using underground water to maintain comfortable temperatures could reduce consumption of natural gas and electricity in this section by 40% in the U.S.The approach is called ATES, short for aquifer thermal energy storage (含水层热能储存).
"We need storage to absorb energy from the sun and wind. It's crucial to creating affordable, reliable, and deeply decarbonized electricity systems. Most people are interested in batteries and other kinds of electrical storage. But we were wondering whether there was any opportunity to use geothermal energy storage,” said first author A.T.D Perera.“With ATES, energy can be stored for a long period of time, without adding an additional burden to the grid (输电网).”
ATES is a pleasantly simple concept that capitalizes on the heat-absorbing property of water and the natural geological features of the planet. You simply pull existing underground water up and heat it at the surface in the summer with environmental heat or energy. Then you send it back down.It stays fairly hot because the Earth is a good insulator (绝热体).
“Unlike above-ground tank-based water or ice storage systems, ATES will not need space. It's also more efficient and can support larger communities in cooling or heating than traditional geothermal heat pump systems that rely on heat moving with the underground soil,” added co-author Hong Tianzhen.
A major benefit of ATES is that it will become more efficient as weather becomes more extreme in the coming years due to climate change. The hotter summers and severer winters could increase the amount of free thermal energy that can be stored with ATES.“It's very much a realistic thing to do and this work is really about showing its value,” said Perera.“This technology is ready to go, so to speak. We just need to do it.”
28.What do we know about energy storage?
A.It is aimed at saving natural energy.
B.It relies on batteries mainly at present.
C.It is technologically demanding.
D.It helps achieve grid decarbonization.
29.How does Hong Tianzhen explain ATES's advantages?
A.By giving examples. B.By discussing results.
C.By making comparisons. D.By analyzing principles.
30.Which will affect ATES's efficiency most?
A.Temperature variations. B.Insulated materials.
C.The duration of storage. D.The category of energy.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.A Turning Point in Energy Usage
B.A Transformation in the US Electricity System
C.A Solution to Green Cooling and Heating
D.A Discovery About Geothermal Energy Storage

In the days before the Internet, critical thinking is the most important skill that we could have.To think critically, we need to read carefully, consider the credibility (可信度) of sources, and reason out conclusions on our own.But in the digital age, according to Anastasia Kozyreva, a psychologist at the Max Planck Institute of Human Development, a more important skill is “critical ignoring”.
“With so much information, we need to first sort the wheat from the chaff, deciding what’s worth our attention and time, and what’s not. Now, we live in an ‘attention economy’ in which we are no longer consumers.Rather, we’re the products whose attention is being sold on the advertising marketplace. That means each link we click on is a sale of our time and attention, often with little or no benefit to ourselves. To protect ourselves, we need to develop new ways of interacting with information,” she said.
Kozyreva advocates learning the skill of critical ignoring, in which readers intentionally control their information environment to reduce their exposure to false and trash information.
By developing our critical ignoring skills, she thinks we can enjoy the benefits of the Internet while avoiding falling victim to those who try to control our attention, our time, and our minds. Here are three of the strategies recommended by her to avoid the traps of attention economy.
The first strategy is self-control.Of course, we need to stay informed of world events and be in touch with others, so we can’t just ignore the Internet altogether. When we do go into social media, Kozyreva recommends setting time limits.Limiting ourselves in this way prevents us from losing track of time as we click on one attractive link after another.
The next strategy is in-depth reading. For example, headlines are often designed to attract attention, not provide information. The contents of the articles may be completely contrary to what the headlines show.
32.What does the underlined phrase “sort the wheat from the chaff” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Decide which produce is more useful.
B.Balance potential harms with benefits.
C.Select the valuable from the valueless.
D.Think about how to divide the profits.
33.What does critical ignoring help us do?
A.Read every attractive link carefully.
B.Reason out conclusions on our own.
C.Avoid using the Internet altogether.
D.Stay away from low-quality information.
34.What might the author continue talking about?
A.Another recommended strategy.
B.The importance of self-control.
C.The traps of attention economy.
D.The value of our time and attention.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To compare two important concepts.
B.To introduce a useful idea to readers.
C.To show the limits of critical thinking.
D.To prove critical ignoring is less important.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

The expression, “everybody’s doing it” is very much at the center of the concept pressure. It is a social influence applied on an individual in order to get that person to act or believe in a similar way as a larger group. 36 Most people experience it in some way during their lives.
People are social creatures by nature. 37 This instinct explains why the approval of peers, and the fear of disapproval is such powerful force in many people’s lives. This instinct drives people to dress one way at home and another way at work, or to answer a simple “fine” when a stranger asks “How are You?” even if it is not necessarily true. There is a practical aspect to this.It helps society function efficiently.Additionally, it simplifies day-to-day interaction between people.
38 They may go too far as to abandon their sense of right and wrong.Teens and young adults may feel forced to use drugs; mature adults get into debt because they try to keep up with others by buying expensive things they can’t afford, like houses or cars. 39 A student whose friends are good at academic may be urged to work harder and get good grades.Players on a sports team may feel driven to play harder in order to help the team win.
Although peer pressure is sometimes quite obvious, it can also be subtle that a person may not even notice that it is affecting their behavior. For this reason, when making important decisions, simply going with an instinct is risky.Instead, people should seriously consider why they feel drawn to taking a particular action. 40
A.However, peer pressure is not always negative.
B.Being self-aware is at the root of managing peer pressure.
C.This influence can be negative or positive in any group size.
D.Giving in to peer pressure can have emotional consequences.
E.They should also question if they are just following the crowd.
F.Some individuals become addicted to seeking social acceptance.
G.Consequently, their self-esteem often comes from others’ approval.

It was 2016 and I was 17.I was searching through online videos for something new to add to my circus skills.Training to be a circus performer, I could already do lots of tricks, but I really wanted to do something rare.
A video caught my eye! It was about a circus performer shooting arrows with a bow-using her feet! That was incredible! I decided to do something like that.I bought a bow and arrow and then went straight to my circus school to start practising.
I was already good at handstands so the idea was that I’d stand on my hands and then shoot the arrow using my toes (脚趾).I controlled the bow and arrow between my toes and at first I could barely get it to shoot one meter. But I kept at it, clocking in several hours a day.Along with practising my bow and arrow skills, I did weights and yoga to stay strong and flexible.
I dreamed of being a great full-time performer, so I kept it up.By the time I left school, I had shot a bullseye (靶心) from around 10 meters away. The world record was shooting a bullseye at 12 meters, so I was determined to beat it someday.
After I left school, Chayne Hultgren, a famous circus performer, offered to train me.I joined him at a festival in 2018 and had my own little side show.Later we did a lot of popular shows.
“I’m worried about my toe grip (抓力),” I told Chayne.
“Sandpaper the skin between your toes to cause friction,” he suggested.
I was determined to make it, so I took his advice.I sanded the skin until my toes bled.It was painful but I held on and gradually the flesh between my toes toughened up, increasing my toe grip.
Eventually, I could shoot a target further than 12 meters, so I contacted the Guinness World Records to find out what I’d need to do to enter. The trick needed to be filmed from different angles and several people had to witness it.The distance had to be measured by a qualified surveyor.
注意: 1.续写词数应为150 个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On August 15, 2022, with all in place, I went to a tennis court where I’d make my attempt.
