The Christmas I will never forget happened when I was 9. I believed in Santa with all my heart. How could I not when I received everything I wished for.

On December 1st,Mum would announce,“It's time. ”Hearing those words, we all knew it was time to write our letters to Santa. One day I asked Mum why we always wrote our letters on December lst. She said because so many kids were writing letters to Santa,he needed time to read them and make all the toys the kids wanted. Once our letters were finished, Mum would put them in her purse and mail them the next day.

Christmas Eve finally arrived. We were all so excited. We did our Christmas Eve traditions. Daddy read us“TheNight Before Christmas”story. Then it was time for sleep. I had such a good feeling about Christmas this year. It was difficult to fall asleep. But sleep finally came and so did Christmas morning. I woke up hearing my brothers yelling. Jimmy came running and jumping on my bed. “Santa's been here, sister! Let's open presents!”

We ran down the stairs. Our eyes were glowing like wildfire as we eyed over the presents under the tree. My brothers and I quickly' snuggled(依偎)among the packages. We all watched as each person unwrapped a gift. I kept watching as my brothers unwrapped gifts. My dad didn't hand me any package. “This year you are going to be the last to get your presents because you are the oldest,” he declared. I didn't think anything of it, so I whispered“OK.”

One by one all of the packages had been opened. There was none left. I couldn't understand. I had been so good this year. Tears began sliding down my cheeks. I ran up to my room. My mum went up the stairs for me to come back down. Dad wanted to talk to me. Sobbing, I slowly made me way back.

Dad signed to me to follow him.

The dog named Sam was my only gift that year.

范文:

Dad signed to me to follow him, As we neared the back door, I saw my mum holding a handsome black dog with deep brown eyes. I was frozen like an ice cube. Then I ran to my dad, jumped into his arms and kissed him. My mum approached us and wrapped her loving arms around us, joining in our happy tears of joy. I had never been so happy in all my 9 years as I was at that moment.

The dog named Sam was my only gift that year. But I got the best gift. The memory of that Christmas stayed with me all these years. My best friend Sam lived to the old age of 16. I never had children. I am old and weak now and losing my eyesight, but I still have such precious memories of past Christmas with my family. I sit in my rocker on cold winter nights during the holiday seasons and picture my childhood home with its charming Christmas tree and old chimney.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was four, my seven-year-old brother received a baseball mitt(手套)for his birthday. Every night, as we went to sleep, I'd listen to him throwing a ball into the mitt over and over to soften the leather. I wanted a mitt so much that I almost cried. But, back then, girls didn't play sports; they played with dolls.

Fast-forward twenty-six years. Now a thirty-year-old mother of three happened to see a notice in my local paper:“Women's Slow-Pitch Softball League opens soon. Anyone interested, sign up at the recreation center.” I cut it out and set it on the kitchen counter. Could I ? After all these years? Was it even possible to think about playing baseball, a game I'd never actually played but had dreamed of playing my entire life? And I'd certainly yatched enough Chicago Cubs games to know how the game was played.

I looked at that notice on my counter every day. I thought of a thousand reasons why I couldn't play. But the idea of playing baseball stuck in my head and wouldn't go away. Finally, I got up my courage and signed up at the recreation center. On the way home, I bought myself a mitt.

On Monday, heart pounding, I walked through the park filled with women of all ages practicing. It took me a while to find my team. They were all high-school girls, seventeen and eighteen years old!

The coach was not at all happy to see me. He had put together top athletes for his team, and he didn't want some old lady messing things up.

That first day, he had me run bases. What that meant was I'd stand near home plate(本垒板) while one of the girls batted, and then I'd run as hard as I could to first base, trying to get there before they threw me out. I did this over and over and over. I never got a chance to bat or play the field. I just ran bases all night. The next morning, I could barely stand.

I was still feeling pain when I showed up to play the next week.

Having seen my determination, the coach changed his attitude toward me.

范文:

I was still feeling pain when I showed up to play the next week. The coach was clearly surprised to see me. He had no idea how determined I was. I could bear whatever abuse he dished out ... as long as I could be part of this game I'd loved and longed to play for so many years. If I stayed at home, I'd never get a chance. At least, by showing up, I was around women playing ball. From then on, I showed up for practice every week. Every game, I spent the night sitting on the bench.

Having seen my determination, the coach changed his attitude toward me. Then he told me to go to center field. Again, the coach looked surprised. It never occurred to him that I might be able to play. What made him more surprised was the catch I'd made and the way I “moved like an athlete”on the field. Later, he recommended me to a professional team and sent me a new mitt. If I hadn't nervously signed up to play ball and dared to take a chance on fulfilling my childhood dream, none of it would have happened.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ella loved her new life in Skagway, Alaska, except for one thing-Grandmother wasn't happy.

In Kansas, Ella went to Grandmother’s house every day after school, and they baked or gardened or sewed (缝纫). Then Papa announced he'd gotten a job in Alaska. She protested for weeks but finally decided to go too. Ella was overjoyed. She couldn't imagine living anywhere without Grandmother.

By autumn, they were in Skagway. Ella had never known so much excitement. Grandmother, however, didn't share Ella's enthusiasm. As winter had set in, Grandmother mostly stayed inside and complained about the cold.

“I wish you were happy,” Ella whispered. “I wish I had a garden of sunflowers peeking through my window right now," Grandmother said.

Ella worried that if Grandmother didn't cheer up soon, she might return to Kansas. So she went to her friend Sara who had lived in Skagway with her Aunt Grace for three years. Ella asked her if sunflowers could grow here.“Maybe,” Sara said. “Let's ask my aunt.”Ella liked Aunt Grace. She reminded her of how Grandmother used to be in Kansas.

Ella explained her problem and Aunt Grace told her sunflowers could grow here only in summer. “Maybe there's another way,”Aunt Grace said. “We can make your grandmother some sunflower quilt blocks(几何拼布) that will be cheery and warm.”

Ella chose the brightest fabrics in Grandmother’s scrap bag and brought them to Sara's house. Every afternoon Ella, Sara, and Aunt Grace sewed sunflower quilt blocks. It was slow going but enjoyable. The finished blocks reminded her of Grandmother's garden in Kansas. It was fun to talk with Sara while they sewed, and Aunt Grace told them stories about when she was young. They always took a break for tea and cookies, too.

Lately Ella hadn't spent much time with Grandmother. She worried that the quilt wouldn't be finished soon enough. Meanwhile, Grandmother seemed sadder and sadder, always talking about her home and friends in Kansas. Ella wished she could tell Grandmother about the quilt, but she wanted to surprise her.

One day when Ella came home, Grandmother was crying.

When Aunt Grace opened the door, Ella explained why Grandmother was there.

范文:

One day when Ella came home, Grandmother was crying. “Don't mind me," Grandmother said, dabbing her eyes. “I was just thinking of home and feeling lonely." On hearing these words, Ella approached her beloved Grandmother and hugged her tightly. Suddenly, memories of their baking, gardening and sewing together in Grandmother’s old house crossed her mind. Had I spent too little time with Grandmother recently? Maybe what Grandmother needed wasn't sunflower quilts but company. A surge of guilt seized her. She couldn't help saying to Grandmother, “Come with me to Sara's house. We've been making a surprise for you.” Before long, they arrived and knocked at the door.

When Aunt Grace opened the door, Ella explained why Grandmother was there with her. “Of course!”Aunt Grace said, “I should've invited you myself." They showed her the blocks they 'd sewn. Holding the handmade quilts, Grandmother couldn't contain her tears, murmuring with a trembling voice “You did this for me?" She insisted on helping, so four of them sat down, sewed and chatted together. Ella hadn't heard Grandmother sound so cheerful since they'd left Kansas. It seemed as if they were back to the good old days. While Aunt Grace and Sara made tea for a break, she said, “I'm sorry. I just wanted to make you happy.” Grandmother stroked her head and smiled, “You have, Ella. You have.”
