Ⅰ. English Passage(原文 · 标红为篇目重点词)
The Silk Road was not a single road but a network of trade routes linking China with Central Asia, West Asia and Europe. It came into being during the Han Dynasty, when Zhang Qian was sent to the western regions and brought back news of lands, peoples and goods unknown to the Chinese court. From then on, silk, tea and porcelain moved westwards, while horses, spices, glassware and religions moved eastwards.
The route was far more than a channel for goods. Along it, ideas travelled as freely as camels: Buddhism entered China from India, and Chinese inventions such as papermaking reached the Arab world and then Europe. Merchant caravans stopped at oasis towns, where they rested, traded and exchanged news. Because the journey across the deserts and mountains was long and dangerous, trust between partners mattered more than any single deal.
The Silk Road also carried culture. Music, dance, clothing and food from one end of Eurasia shaped life at the other. Dunhuang, with its caves flooded with statues and murals, stands as a lasting proof of this exchange. Although the opening of the sea routes weakened it after the Ming Dynasty, the Silk Road remains a symbol of openness and dialogue among civilisations.

It came into being during the Han Dynasty, when Zhang Qian was sent to the western regions and brought back news of lands, peoples and goods unknown to the Chinese court.
when Zhang Qian … 从句由 and 连接两个并列谓语 was sent(被动)与 brought back。of lands, peoples and goods 中 of 后接三个并列名词;unknown to the Chinese court 是形容词短语作后置定语,修饰 goods(原可视作 which were unknown to)。 所……",主语是 lands, peoples and goods。
Because the journey across the deserts and mountains was long and dangerous, trust between partners mattered more than any single deal.
across the deserts and mountains more than any single deal 为比较级结构;注意 more than 后接名词,而 than 用于比较,此处 more 不可省(易错点:少写 more 就变成 than 的直接比较,语义不通)。
