Reading for Pleasure Is Making a Comeback

For years, teachers and parents in Britain have worried about a single trend: teenagers were reading less and less for fun. A 2023 survey found that only 29% of secondary-school students read something they had chosen themselves outside class, down from 41% a decade earlier. The usual suspects were easy to name—smartphones, short videos and endless social-media feeds.

Now, however, a growing number of schools are fighting back. The movement has a simple name: reading for pleasure. At Parkside Academy in Manchester, the first ten minutes of every form period are silent reading. Students bring in novels, graphic novels, memoirs or magazines; teachers join in too. "We are not asking them to analyse the text," says English teacher Ms Holt. "We just want them to experience what it feels like to be lost in a book."

Other schools have added special programmes. At Riverside School in London, older students act as "reading ambassadors", visiting Year 7 classes to talk about books they have loved. A recent evaluation showed that students who took part were twice as likely to visit the library in their free time. Some boys, who often read less than girls in this age group, said the ambassadors made reading feel "less like homework and more like a recommendation from a friend".

The benefits go beyond English grades. Research from the University of Sussex links regular reading for pleasure to lower stress levels, better sleep and stronger empathy. "Reading lets you live inside someone else's head for a while," explains Dr Patel, who led the study. "That practice in seeing the world from another point of view is hard to get from a three-minute video."

Not every experiment works perfectly. Some students still try to hide phones inside their books, and a few schools report that buying enough new titles is expensive. Yet the overall direction is clear. As one Year 10 student put it, "I used to think reading was what you did when the Wi-Fi was broken. Now I actually look forward to it."

Why Boredom Is Good for You

We live in an age of constant stimulation. Phones, music, games and videos fill almost every spare minute.     36     Yet researchers are discovering that boredom is not the enemy we once thought it was.

In a study at the University of Central Lancashire, one group was asked to copy numbers from a phone book before taking a creative test. The bored group performed better than those who had not done the dull task.     37

The explanation lies in how the brain works. When we are bored, the brain enters what scientists call the "default mode network".     38     This explains why daydreaming on a long bus ride can suddenly produce a solution to a problem that has troubled us for days.

39     Passive boredom, such as endlessly scrolling through short videos, leaves the brain overstimulated and tired. Active boredom, on the other hand, happens when we allow our minds to wander without a screen in front of us.

So the next time you feel bored, resist the urge to reach for your phone.     40     You may discover that a little emptiness can make room for something truly original.

A. However, not all boredom is helpful.

B. People who read regularly often sleep better and feel less stressed.

C. Instead, let your mind drift for a few minutes; you might be surprised by what it creates.

D. Many people see boredom as something to be avoided at all costs.

E. In this state, it reviews memories, imagines future events, and solves problems in the background.

F. Students who read for pleasure are more likely to do well in all subjects, not just English.

G. This suggests that boredom can create space for the mind to wander and make new connections.

2. B 第一段末尾提到 "The usual suspects were easy to name—smartphones, short videos and endless social-media feeds" → 手机和短视频更吸引人,选 B。

3. A 第三段:"reading ambassadors" 是高年级学生 visiting Year 7 classes to talk about books they have loved → 向低年级学生推荐书籍,选 A。

多余项:B(关于阅读与睡眠)和 F(关于阅读与各科成绩)均偏离「无聊」主题,属于阅读话题的干扰项。
