China is aging faster than any country in history. By 2035, more than 400 million people will be over sixty. This means that for every three young people entering the workforce, there will be one elderly person needing care. The demographic shift is not just a number on a chart. It will reshape how families live, how cities are built, and how young people plan their future.
The traditional model was simple: children cared for their parents at home. But today, many young people live hundreds of kilometers away, working long hours in competitive jobs. They cannot be there every day. The guilt is real. A daughter may earn enough to pay for a nursing home, but she cannot replace the warmth of a family dinner. A son may call every night, but a phone call cannot help someone who has fallen and cannot get up.
Society is trying to find answers. Some cities are building community care centers where elderly people can gather during the day. Others are training professional caregivers who can visit homes. Technology is also helping: sensors can detect falls, monitors can track health, and video calls can reduce loneliness. But no machine can replace a human hand holding an old person's hand.
The real challenge is not economic. It is cultural. We need to rethink what it means to grow old in a modern society. We need to see the elderly not as a burden, but as a resource — people who have lived long lives and have much to teach. We need to build a society where growing old is not something to fear, but something to prepare for with dignity. After all, every young person today will be old one day. How we treat the elderly now is how we will be treated then.
进入workforce(/ˈwɜːkfɔːs/,劳动力市场)。elderly(/ˈeldəli/,老人)需要照顾。demographic(/ˌdeməˈɡræfɪk/,人口结构的)转变。 traditional(/trəˈdɪʃənl/,传统的)模式。在competitive(/kəmˈpetətɪv/,竞争的)工作中。guilt(/ɡɪlt/,内疚)真实。付nursing(/ˈnɜːsɪŋ/,护理)院的钱。 community(/kəˈmjuːnəti/,社区)照护中心。professional(/prəˈfeʃənl/,专业的)照护者。 减少loneliness(/ˈləʊnlinəs/,孤独)。 不是economic(/ˌiːkəˈnɒmɪk/,经济的)挑战,是文化的。把老人看作resource(/ˈriːsɔːs/,资源)而不是burden(/ˈbɜːdn/,负担)。有dignity(/ˈdɪɡnəti/,尊严)地变老。 |
