The ocean covers most of our planet. A single wave can carry a boat, and the tide rises and falls without anyone pulling it. Where the shore meets the water, a quiet bay holds a small port. Boats sail in and out of the harbor, and fishermans head for the open sea before sunrise.

Beneath the surface, the water grows colder with depth. A strong current moves like a hidden river. Salt in the water keeps ships floating. Every voyage across the sea requires a navigator. Long ago, sailors used the stars to find their way. Today, GPS helps ships navigate any ocean. But the sea does not care about our maps. A storm can rise in an hour, and a calm surface can hide danger below.

We call it marine life — the fish, the plants, and the whole system that lives in salt water. The ocean gives us food, weather, and oxygen. It also asks us to be careful. We may not know every depth, but we can learn the words that describe it. That is the first step to understanding the blue planet we all live on.
