The Watch That Knows Your Body

Ten years ago, a watch only told you the time. Today, a watch can tell you how fast your heart is beating, how many steps you took, how deeply you sleept, and even how stressed you are. These devices, called wearables, have moved from the wrists of sports fans to the wrists of ordinary people. And they are changing how we think about health.

The appeal is easy to understand. A wearable turns abstract ideas — "exercise more," "sleep better" — into numbers you can see. If your watch tells you that you only slept five hours last night, you are more likely to go to bed earlier tonight. If it shows that your heart rate stays high during rest, you may decide to see a doctor before a small problem becomes a big one. In this sense, wearables are not just gadgets. They are tools that help people take responsibility for their own bodies.

But there is another side. A watch that measures everything can also create anxiety. Some people check their heart rate dozens of times a day. Others cannot sleep because they are worried about their sleep score. The device that was supposed to improve health becomes a source of stress. And the numbers are not always accurate. A wearable may count a car ride as steps, or misread a heartbeat during exercise. Treating the device as a doctor, rather than as a rough guide, can lead to unnecessary worry.

The best way to use a wearable is the same as the best way to use any tool: with common sense. Let the numbers guide you, but do not let them rule you. Notice when your body feels tired, even if the watch says you are fine. Go for a walk because it feels good, not only because the step count is low. Technology can tell you a great deal about your body. But it cannot tell you how to live. That part is still yours.

十年前watch(/wɒtʃ/,手表)只看时间。现在能告诉你heart(/hɑːt/,心脏)beat(/biːt/,跳动)多快、走了多少step(/step/,步数)、睡得有多深、有多stress(/stres/,压力)。这些device(/dɪˈvaɪs/,设备)叫wearable(/ˈweərəbl/,可穿戴设备)。从运动爱好者的wrist(/rɪst/,手腕)走到ordinary(/ˈɔːdnri/,普通的)人的手腕。改变对health(/helθ/,健康)的看法。

appeal(/əˈpiːl/,吸引力)容易理解。把abstract(/ˈæbstrækt/,抽象的)概念变成数字。exercise(/ˈeksəsaɪz/,锻炼)更多。 不只是gadget(/ˈɡædʒɪt/,小器具),是帮助人们为身体负责的responsibility(/rɪˌspɒnsəˈbɪləti/,责任)工具。

测量一切的手表制造anxiety(/æŋˈzaɪəti/,焦虑)。 数字不总是accurate(/ˈækjərət/,准确的)。可能把坐车count(/kaʊnt/,计数)成步数,或者misread(/ˌmɪsˈriːd/,误读)心跳。当成医生而不是粗略guide(/ɡaɪd/,指南)导致不必要担忧。

用common(/ˈkɒmən/,普通的)sense。
