He could hardly support his family before he found the new job.
注意:can / could 与 be able to 的区别
I haven’t been able to read that report yet.
He will be able to skate as well as you.
He studied hard and was able to pass the exam.
(3)在其他动词,如 might、may、would、want、hope 等之后,表示能力时只能用 be able to。
例句:
He might be able to fix your car.

will will 用于谈论现在 Ask him. He will know.
The person you mentioned would be her father.
can / could 多用于口语中,表示委婉的请求或陈述看法时,口语中多用could,但回答时仍然用can You can go out to play after you finish your homework. —Could I see your driving license? —Of course you can.
may / might 表示请求允许时,might比may语气更加委婉一些,是比较正式的用法;表示给予允许时通常用may,不用might May I leave this with you? I wonder if I might speak to your son. You may not take photos in the museum.
Will you please post the letter for me? Would you tell me how to get to the shopping mall?
Shall I get a chair for you? Shall the boy come at once?
should / ought to 用来表示现在或将来的责任或义务,意为“应该,应当”;ought to 比 should 语气更强 You should complete your test in time. You ought to tell your mother about it at once.
Students shall wear school uniforms in the school. Passengers shall not talk with the driver while the bus is moving.
must 表示“应当,必须”,相当于 should / ought to,但语气更强烈 You must say hello to her. You must finish your homework first.

need 意为“需要”,在否定句中表示“不必,未必”;情态动词need的一般疑问句的肯定回答用must,否定回答用needn’t You needn’t try to explain again. —Need I finish my work today? —Yes, you must. / No, you needn’t.

第一题,答案:might 表推测,而解析中优先填 would 因后有 like,would like =want 表委婉的推测。
What we ____ get seems better than what we have.
你提出:can’t
What we will get seems better than what we have.(教材常见原句)
2)填 can’t get,语法句子也通顺:
“What we can’t get seems better than what we have.”
When ____ he be able to leave the hospital?
1. Shall he wait outside?
2. When shall my brother leave hospital?
When shall he be able to leave the hospital?
When will he be able to leave the hospital?
