The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health recently released a report on global mental health, highlighting the growing impact of digital technology on people’s well-being. The report, based on a survey of 150,000 people from 30 countries, found that excessive use of social media is closely linked to increased rates of anxiety and depression, especially among teenagers.

However, the report also pointed out that digital technology can play a positive role in mental health care. For example, AI-powered counseling apps can provide 24/7 support to those in need, and online support groups can help people feel less isolated. The researchers emphasized that the key is to find a balance between digital use and real-life interaction.

Dr. Lisa Smith, the lead author of the report, said, “We are not suggesting that people stop using digital technology. Instead, we need to promote digital literacy and help people use these tools in a healthy way. Parents, teachers and policymakers all have a role to play in this process.”

The report also called for more investment in mental health services, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where access to care is often limited. It suggested that governments should work with tech companies to develop more responsible digital products and create policies to protect young people from harmful content.

Craftsmanship(工匠精神) is more than just a skill—it is a way of life that values quality, dedication and attention to detail. In an era of mass production and fast consumption, the spirit of craftsmanship is becoming increasingly important, especially in the context of labor education in China.

Li Wei, a master carpenter with over 30 years of experience, embodies the essence of craftsmanship. He spends months on a single piece of furniture, carefully selecting materials, refining every detail and ensuring that each product is both functional and beautiful. “Craftsmanship means taking pride in your work and striving for perfection,” Li said. “It’s not about working fast; it’s about working well.”

In recent years, labor education has been integrated into the school curriculum in China, aiming to cultivate students’ practical skills and work ethic. Many schools have set up workshops where students can learn traditional crafts such as carpentry, pottery and embroidery. These courses not only teach students practical skills but also help them develop patience, perseverance and a sense of responsibility.

However, promoting craftsmanship is not without challenges. The fast-paced modern lifestyle often leads people to prioritize speed over quality, and many young people are reluctant to pursue careers in traditional crafts due to the long training period and relatively low income. To address this issue, the government has launched a series of policies to support traditional crafts, including providing subsidies for craftsmen and promoting the integration of traditional crafts with modern design.

25. What does Li Wei think of craftsmanship?A. It requires fast work speedB. It focuses on quantity rather than qualityC. It means pursuing perfection in workD. It is only suitable for traditional craftsmen

26. Why are many young people unwilling to pursue careers in traditional crafts?A. They think traditional crafts are outdatedB. They don’t like manual workC. The training period is long and income is lowD. There are no government policies to support them

27. What is the purpose of integrating labor education into the school curriculum?A. To help students make more money in the futureB. To cultivate students’ practical skills and work ethicC. To promote traditional crafts among young peopleD. To reduce the burden of academic study

With the rapid development of AI technology, there has been a heated debate about the impact of AI on the job market. Some people believe that AI will replace a large number of jobs, leading to widespread unemployment. Others argue that AI will create new jobs and improve work efficiency, bringing more opportunities to the job market.

A recent study by Stanford University’s AI Institute examined the impact of AI on 500 different occupations. The study found that AI is most likely to replace jobs that involve repetitive tasks, such as data entry, assembly line work and basic customer service. However, jobs that require creativity, critical thinking, emotional intelligence and human interaction, such as doctors, teachers, artists and social workers, are less likely to be replaced by AI.

The study also found that AI is creating new jobs in fields such as AI development, data analysis, cyber security and digital marketing. For example, the demand for AI engineers has increased by 150% in the past five years, and the demand for data analysts has increased by 120%. In addition, AI is improving work efficiency in many industries, allowing workers to focus on more complex and creative tasks.

However, the study warns that the transition to an AI-driven job market will not be smooth. Many workers whose jobs are at risk of being replaced by AI will need to receive retraining to acquire new skills. Governments and companies have a responsibility to provide training programs and support for these workers to help them adapt to the changing job market.

In conclusion, while AI will undoubtedly change the job market, it is not a threat to employment in the long run. Instead, it will reshape the job market, creating new opportunities and challenges. The key is to adapt to these changes by improving our skills and embracing new technologies.

Last summer, I participated in a labor education program in a small village. My task was to help the local farmers with their farm work and learn about traditional farming culture. On my first day, I met Grandpa Chen, an elderly farmer who had been working in the fields for over 60 years. He was kind and patient, and he agreed to teach me how to grow vegetables.

At first, I was full of enthusiasm. Grandpa Chen taught me how to turn over the soil, sow seeds and water the fields. However, after a few hours of hard work, I felt tired and sweaty. My hands were sore from holding the farm tools, and my clothes were covered in dirt. I began to regret participating in the program and wanted to give up.

Grandpa Chen noticed my change in mood. He stopped working and sat down with me under a big tree. He told me stories about his life as a farmer and how he had overcome many difficulties. He said, “Farming is not easy, but it teaches us patience and perseverance. Every seed you sow will grow into a plant if you take good care of it. Life is the same—only through hard work can you achieve your goals.”

His words touched me deeply. I decided to stick with the program and learn as much as I could from Grandpa Chen.

1. 景点名称与地理位置;

2. 景点特色(如自然景观、文化内涵、历史价值等);

1. 词数80左右;

2. 可适当增加细节,以使行文连贯、富有感染力;

Dear Peter,

I’m glad to hear you’re coming to China. I’d like to introduce the West Lake to you, which is one of the most famous scenic spots in our country.

Located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, the West Lake is famous for its beautiful natural scenery—clear water, green hills and graceful bridges. It also carries rich cultural connotations, with many ancient poems and stories about it. Every year, it attracts millions of visitors from home and abroad.

I sincerely invite you to visit the West Lake. I’m sure you’ll be deeply impressed by its charm and have a wonderful time here!

发出邀请:结尾用“I sincerely invite you...”

Paragraph 1:

In the following days, I worked harder than ever before.I got up early every morning to follow Grandpa Chen to the fields, learning to distinguish weeds from vegetable seedlings and master the proper way to water and fertilize. Though my hands were covered with blisters and my back ached every night, I never thought about giving up again. Grandpa Chen always encouraged me patiently, teaching me not only farm work skills but also the wisdom of life. With his guidance, I gradually became proficient in farm work and even looked forward to working in the fields every day.

Paragraph 2:

When the program came to an end, I had grown a lot.The vegetables I helped grow were ripe, and seeing the fresh and tender greens, I felt a strong sense of achievement. I not only mastered basic farm work skills but also understood the true meaning of patience and perseverance. This labor education program taught me to cherish the fruits of hard work and respect every farmer. I said goodbye to Grandpa Chen reluctantly, knowing that the experience in the village would become a precious memory that inspires me to face difficulties bravely in the future.

1. 第一段解析:严格承接开头句“In the following days, I worked harder than ever before”,贴合原文决定坚持的情节,逻辑连贯。① 动作细节:“got up early”“follow Grandpa Chen to the fields”“distinguish weeds from vegetable seedlings”等,具体描写努力劳作的场景,符合禁止套模板、注重细节的要求;② 情感细节:“hands were covered with blisters”“back ached”呼应原文劳作辛苦的情节,同时“never thought about giving up again”体现心理变化,呼应Grandpa Chen的鼓励;③ 情节衔接:加入“Grandpa Chen always encouraged me”,与前文Grandpa Chen的形象一致,为后文成长铺垫,无脱节。

2. 第二段解析:承接开头句“When the program came to an end, I had grown a lot”,聚焦收获与成长,完成主题升华。① 细节支撑:“vegetables... were ripe”“fresh and tender greens”等场景描写,让成长更具体可感,体现劳动有收获② 主题升华:“understood the true meaning of patience and perseverance”“cherish the fruits of hard work and respect every farmer”,直接呼应Grandpa Chen的话语,将学农的经历上升到人生感悟,符合题干主题升华的要求;③ 情感真实:“strong sense of achievement”“said goodbye... reluctantly”等心理描写,贴合努力后收获成长的真实情感,无生硬套话。

Grandpa Chen“Farming is not easy, but it teaches us patience and perseverance... only through hard work can you achieve your goals”的核心话语,实现情节闭环+主题升华

As one of the greatest archeological finds of the 20th century, the Sanxingdui Ruins are believed to be the remains of the Shu Kingdom, dating back at least 4,800 years and lasting over 2,000 years.

The ruins are located in Guanghan city in Southwest China’s Sichuan province, covering 12 square kilometers.

The Yinxu Ruins, Henan province

The Yinxu Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Anyang city, Henan province, was an ancient capital of the Shang Dynasty (16th century BC-11th century BC).

Spreading across over 30 square kilometers, the site features the greatest number of oracle bone inscriptions (甲骨文) discovered so far in the world.

The Daming Palace, Shaanxi province

Famous for its super-large scale and magnificent buildings, Daming Palace was the main royal palace in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) where Tang emperors lived and dealt with state affairs.

Covering 3.2 square kilometers, it fully demonstrates the majestic style of grand architecture during the Tang empire.

With artificial intelligence (AI) programs that can now generate entire songs on demand, you’d be forgiven for thinking AI might eventually lead to the decline of human-made music. As a composer and music educator, I happened to start working with the technology.

Music AI can be used in sound analysis, noise removal and mixing. Suno, Beethoven and Udio are some of the companies currently leading in the AI music field. In many cases, the outputs don’t have to be excellent; they just need to be good enough to compete with real musicians. The music industry is understandably concerned. In April 2024, over 200 artists signed an open letter urging AI developers to stop training models with copyrighted (有版权的) material.

In 2023, I was invited to create a new work with Sydneybased design company Kopi Su, and develop a new music AI tool. Would this be a huge waste of time, or end with my data added to some mysterious AI data pool? Or would it open up new creative directions for me? Nevertheless, I finally accepted it.

The new tool, called Koup Music, was based on a text-to-image model. For example, I could upload a short vocal melody (声乐旋律) and ask the AI to turn it into an insect sound or a“hip hop” style. Though samples were limited to 5-10 seconds, they led to unexpected ideas. Some samples were rather pleasing. Others were boring. Some came out with unpleasant tones. The imperfection gave me permission to have fun. I focused on generating separate musical elements with my text instructions, rather than fully arranged samples.

The process felt like cooperation-like I was making music with a “kooky colleague”. This took away the pressure to make “perfect” music, and instead allowed me to focus on new creative possibilities.

The key to a meaningful relationship with music AI is to work alongside it-not let it do all the work. Under the right circumstances, it can provide the tools to produce something truly creative. Making “imperfect” art that takes time is the price of being human. And I’m grateful for that.

24Why was the open letter signed in 2024?

ATo seek financial support from AI companies.

BTo encourage musicians to cooperate with AI.

CTo promote the development of AI music tools.

DTo protest the use of copyrighted works in AI training.

25What is the author’s initial attitude towards the work invitation?

ACurious and eager.BExcited and confident.

CDoubtful and hesitant.DIndifferent and uninterested.

26What can the new AI tool offer to the author?

AMusical elements with varied quality.BComplete songs with sweet melodies.

CProfessional noise removal solutions.DPerfectly arranged musical samples.

27Which of the following might the author agree with?

AMusicians rely too much on AI tools.BAI should be used as a cooperative tool.

CAI music is a threat to human musicians.DThe music industry overestimates AI risks.

For all the fears around teens and screens, the most square-eyed generation is the elderly. Older people have long been champion TV-viewers. Now a new generation of pensioners (领养老金的人) are adding to their screen time with smartphones and iPads, which take up more than half of their waking hours.

The digitization of old age is a good thing. Facebook and WhatsApp bring daily updates from old friends and faraway grandchildren. Zoom transports church, book clubs and doctors’ appointments into the home for people who cannot attend personally. E-commerce removes physical shopping burdens. Hours of entertainment from any era are available on demand. A connected retirement is more fulfilling and fun than an offline one.

Older people are protected from some of the on-screen risks that threaten teenagers. Having established their key real-life relationships, they are less in danger of the social development challenges that affect youth. Their worldviews, already formed, prove more resistant to online temptation. Furthermore, their extensive free time means swapping one leisure pursuit for another — unlike for students facing academic pressures.

However, as retirement moves online there will be costs that society must consider. Older folks' devices, unlike those of teenagers, are usually connected to credit cards. Door-to-door cheats, who have long preyed (欺骗) on the elderly, can now go iPad-to-iPad. The authorities rightly strive to protect children from online predators. They must recognize that there is another, fast-growing disadvantaged group to look after. Additionally, as heavy consumers of digital news, older adults tend to fall for misinformation — a problem made worse by advancing AI technology. Since seniors are the most consistent voting group, their potential miseducation would negatively affect elections.

The social impact remains complex. While digital connectivity reduces feelings of loneliness, it may also reduce physical social interaction. Unlike children whose screen time is regulated by adults, seniors generally lack guidance from others in dealing with these pros and cons. Next time children are urged to put down the phones, they might glance toward their grandparents — equally obsessed with their own screens — suggesting that digital responsibility knows no age limit.

28Why is digital life beneficial to the elderly?

AIt is a replacement for their offline life.BIt reduces their need for entertainment.

CIt gives access to professional training.DIt offers social contact and convenience.

29Why are elderly users more resistant to some digital risks?

AThey receive family guidance.BThey have sound life foundations.

CThey use simpler digital devices.DThey possess stronger technical skills.

30What can be inferred from paragraph 4?

ATeenagers are better at identifying online cheating.

BAI technology is a primary driver of misinformation.

CGovernments should expand online protection efforts.

DSeniors hold a casual attitude towards political affairs.

31Which describes the author’s attitude to the digitization of seniors?

ASkeptical.BConcerned.CPessimistic.DFavorable.

D

A dog acting aggressively (攻击性地)at the park and a student dealing with low mood while doing well in school may seem unrelated, but new research says they could share similar genetic roots.Scientists studied over 1,000 golden retrievers, a kind of dog, and found that many genes influencing dog behavior also shape human personality, intelligence, and emotional health. Published in a leading science journal, this finding challenges simple ideas about what drives behavior in both species.

Golden retrievers that did well in training had special versions of genes called ROMO1 and ADGRL2. In humans, ROMO1 is linked to intelligence and how well people learn and think, while ADGRL2 is linked to emotional sensitivity and getting annoyed easily. This means trainable dogs might be smarter and more emotionally aware, not just more willing to follow orders. This matters for programs that train service dogs. Many rely heavily on food rewards to shape behavior. But if trainability is really about problem-solving ability, programs might be better off selecting dogs based on cognitive (认知)tests rather than just how eagerly they go after treats.

The strongest genetic similarities were in fear-related behaviors. Dogs afraid of loud noises, strangers, or other dogs had variants (变体)in genes like ACC3 and PRDX1. In humans, these genes are tied to anxiety, depression, and mood changes. This shows a dog hiding during a thunderstorm might feel something close to human anxiety. Owners of such dogs may need more than just training — changing their environment to reduce stress or even medication in serious cases could help.

Of course, genes don’t determine everything. Training, early life experiences, and environment still play big roles. The research relied on owner-reported questionnaires rather than direct observation of dog behavior, which introduces subjectivity in how owners perceive their pets. Environmental factors like training methods, household dynamics, and life experiences varied widely and could influence behavior. The study included only golden retrievers aged 3 to 7 years, so results may not apply to other dogs.

32What did scientists find about dogs and humans?

AThey shape their actions by training.BTheir origins in intelligence are identical.

CThey don’t have the same emotional genes.DTheir behaviors have similar genetic roots.

33What characteristics do trainable dogs have?

AThey lack fear in training.BThey are desperate for treats.

CThey have sharp emotional perception.DThey are unwilling to follow orders.

34How should owners treat their fearful dogs?

APunish their fearful behaviors.BIncrease their treat rewards.

CAdjust their living environment.DFocus mainly on training.

35What is the last paragraph mainly about?

AMajor limitations of the study.BSuggestions for studies on humans.

CExplanations of the research method.DPossible reasons for the study findings.

When I show people this image and ask what they see, they mostly say a question mark with two periods. They often add that the two periods represent your past and future, and the question mark is today. They wouldn’t be wrong. As a society, we are either focused on not repeating the past mistakes or what we’ll do in the future. We make lists, track what we read, study, watch, or listen to, and think a lot on injustices that demand equality.    36

What if I tell you that there’s more white space than actual markings in the image? White space — also called negative space — exists in design as the unprinted area that is purposeful.    37 Jocelyn K. Glei describes it as balancing the page by letting elements breathe, enhancing focus.

38 Glei suggests applying white space to daily schedules to foster innovation and imagination. Other writings describe it as cultivating the mental capacity to play, explore, learn, and rest without guilt or distraction. By shifting focus to the white space, we invite creativity and transcend the ordinary, helping us become who we’re meant to be.

Simply put, wherever you have goals and dreams, this is where you need white space in your life.    39 Rather than being continually active, rushing from one activity to the next, set aside time to just hold hands. Do you want to be more creative and productive when you are trying to build a business or create income through writing? Then schedule white space into your calendar to nurture creativity. White space isn’t laziness; it’s intentional time for wisdom to flow.

So, how can we introduce this concept into our daily routines? You can create white space by intentionally setting electronics aside and walking away from your smartphone.40 Just like a webpage’s white space draws the eye, a life with scheduled white space draws in possibility.

A. But here is where we get our focus all wrong.

B. It supports visual integrity and draws attention.

C. But our focus tends to skip the present moment.

D. It creates an environment that fuels innovation and imagination.

E. White space also comes from taking a walk or gazing at the breeze.

F. Do you desire a deeper relationship with the special one in your life?

G. If white space works so well in design, could it also improve our lives?

Chinese is the native tongue of more people on Earth than any other language. So what happens when 1.3 billion Chinese speakers rush to learn English, the 56(globe)language of business? Actually there will be a happy integration!

Chinese and English words get mixed together 57 that the result is jokingly called “Chinglish”. As a matter of fact, “Chinglish” is the linguistic(语言的)result of English language 58(adapt)that are created and influenced by native Chinese speakers. You can’t find these Chinglish words in any dictionary, but on your next China adventure, you will 59(certain)encounter “Chinglish”. As native Chinese speakers study English, they often generate phrases 60 means of direct translation. One common example is the phrase “Good good study, day day up” 61(speak)by many studying English.

Other Chinglish can combine sounds and meanings 62(create)humorous phrases. For instance, the popularity of the iPhone in China has led consumers to eagerly purchase one. That’s 63 they have called iPhones“iFeng”. Feng comes from the Chinese word for “crazy”, which64(pronounce)as “feng”.

Language is used for communicating ideas and culture. In Chinese culture, language is also 65 opportunity for wordplay, like the various uses of numbers in China. Take note and thus your next Beijing tour or Xizang travel will not leave you confused.

Mia had a great start to the day. She had a good night’s sleep and stayed in bed until seven o’clock. Her husband and her lovely son had gone skiing, so she could enjoy her freedom. Also, the house was very quiet and peaceful. “I’ll take a nap before I have breakfast,” thought the sleepy woman as she turned around and closed her eyes again.

However, a few minutes later, Mia woke up to a strange noise. “What was that?” thought Mia. The noise soon stopped, so she turned around again, thinking, “It was probably something in my dream.” But when she turned back to the other side of the bed, she heard the noise again. She was sure that the sound was coming from the window. Out of curiosity, she got out of bed and approached the window.

When she pulled the curtain aside, Mia couldn’t believe what she saw. There were two little squirrels (松鼠) in a nest, which might not be old enough to move freely. The noise was coming from here. The curtain in the room had been drawn for the past few weeks, so she hadn’t noticed that the lovely animals were making a nest on the tree branch beside the window. “I have to get this on camera,” she thought eagerly. She immediately took her camera and took pictures of the two cute squirrels.

The little squirrels were relaxed inside the nest. Mia could tell how peaceful the little creatures felt. Unfortunately, the window wouldn’t open, or she would have touched them and patted their heads.

“Their mother must have left them alone to look for food,” Mia thought, trying to get the perfect pictures from different angles. Actually, she wanted to take a clear picture of their cute, sleepy faces. However, she got the shock of her life when she brought the camera closer to the squirrels. An eagle resting on a tree opposite threatened to attack the tiny babies.

Just as the eagle spread its wings, Mia’s natural reaction took over. Without a second thought, Mia hit the window hard with her hand and yelled, “Leave them alone!” The sudden noise and vibration startled the large bird away. It stopped its attack and cast a sharp glance toward Mia behind the glass. Though the tiny squirrels also froze in fear, Mia had to keep making loud sounds and flash her camera light. Thankfully, the continuous noise and the unexpected bright light finally forced the eagle to push off from the branch and fly away.

Mia smiled with relief as the two little squirrels slowly relaxed their tense bodies. Soon, the mother squirrel returned with some food in her mouth. The tiny squirrels moved excitedly and rubbed against their mother for food. A profound sense of warmth and fulfillment washed over Mia as she witnessed this intimate reunion. The mother squirrel stopped for a moment on the windowsill, looking at Mia as if to quietly say thanks, before caring for her babies. Mia’s heart swelled with joy, knowing she not only had captured wonderful photos but had also become a silent guardian of a squirrel family.

John Hartnett’s path to becoming a skilled furniture restorer was unexpected. Unlike many of his classmates who thrived (取得成功) in traditional academic settings, John often felt out of place. “I wasn’t a bad student, but I didn’t connect with how things were taught,” he says. He believed his future was somewhere else, but he didn’t know where until a school woodworking project sparked (激发) a deep and immediate passion within him.

This initial interest led him to pursue formal training in furniture making and restoration. It was during this period that he truly understood the depth of the craft. He learned not only the skills, but also the patience and respect for the material. For John, restoration was far more than simple repair; it was a process of uncovering history. Each piece of furniture, with its unique scratches and wear, told a story of past times. He felt a sense of responsibility to preserve these stories for the future.

After finishing his training, John started his own workshop. His days are now spent bringing damaged and aging furniture back to its former glory. The work is challenging, requiring careful analysis and a steady hand. However, the greatest reward comes from the emotional connection he builds with his clients. Often, they bring items of great emotional value — a grandmother’s favorite chair or a table around which a family has gathered for decades. Seeing their joyful reactions upon seeing a cherished piece restored is, for John, the most satisfying part of his job.

Looking back, John feels he has found his true calling. He has built a meaningful career by doing the work he truly loves, combining his hands-on skill with a deep appreciation for history and family memories. He believes that in our fast-paced world, the act of restoring and valuing well-made old objects is a powerful statement. It’s a reminder of quality, sustainability, and the lasting stories that connect us all.

4What motivated John to pursue his furniture career?

AThe job market for skillful restorers.

BThe need to escape academic settings.

CThe woodworking experience at school.

DThe desire to thrive in furniture making.

5What did John value most during his training?

AGrasping historical values of furniture.

BWinning awards for his technical skills.

CMastering the latest craft to design tools.

DLearning to manage a workshop efficiently.

6What is the biggest reward for John in his job?

AGlobal fame.BFlexible schedules.

CCompetitive salaries.DClients’ satisfaction.

7What message does John’s experience deliver?

ATime reveals the character.BPassion fuels a meaningful life.

CTradition holds the key to innovation.DSuccess depends on advanced tools.

In shallow coastal waters of the Indian ocean, Dugong, a kind of sea cow, is in trouble. Environmental problems pose such a major threat to its survival that the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) upgraded the species’ extinction risk status(地位)to vulnerable (脆弱的).

Much worse, Dugongs are at risk of losing the protection of the Torres Strait Islanders, who have looked after them historically, hunting them for food sustainably and monitoring their numbers. These native people keep their biodiversity, and have deep knowledge about their environment. But these people are also threatened, in part because rising sea levels are making it difficult for them to live there.

This situation isn’t unique to Dugongs. A global analysis of 385 culturally important plant and animal species found 68 percent were both biologically vulnerable and at risk of losing their cultural protection.

The findings clearly illustrate that biology shouldn’t be the primary factor in shaping conservation policy, says anthropologist Victoria Reyes-García.When a culture declines, the species that are important to that culture are also threatened.“Lots of conservationists think we need to separate people from nature,” says Reyes-García. “But that strategy misses the caring relationship many cultural groups have with nature.”

One way to help shift conservation efforts is to give species a “bio-cultural status,”which would provide a fuller picture of their vulnerability. In the study, the team used a new way to determine a species’ risk of disappearing: the more a cultural group’s language use declines, the more that culture is threatened. The more a culture is threatened, the more culturally vulnerable its important species are. Researchers then combined a species’ cultural and biological vulnerability to arrive at its bio-cultural status. In the Dugong’s case, its bio-cultural status is endangered, meaning it is more at risk than its IUCN categorization suggests.

This new approach to conservation involves people that have historically cared for them. It can highlight when communities need support to continue their care. Scientists hope it will bring more efforts that recognize local communities’ rights and encourage their participation-taking advantage of humans’ connection with nature instead of creating more separation.

8What is the relationship between the native people and Dugongs?

AThe native people help conserve Dugongs.

BThe native people train Dugongs to survive.

CDugongs ruin the native people’s environment.

DDugongs force the native people to leave home.

9Which statement will Reyes-García probably agree with?

AThe protection policy is used incorrectly.BCulture is connected to species’ existence.

CMany groups take good care of each other.DConservationists prefer nature over people.

10How is the study method different from previous ones?

AIt involves more preservation efforts.

BIt relies on the IUCN’s classification.

CIt highlights the effect of human languages.

DIt assesses the biological influence of a species.

11What is the author’s attitude towards the latest approach?

AConservative.BFavourable.CCritical.DAmbiguous.

A team of University of Houston researchers is reporting a newly recognized process of drug metabolism(代谢) in the intestines()—followed by recycling through the liver(肝脏)—that could have important meanings for developing treatments for intestinal diseases and for taking multiple drugs at the same time.

“The intestines play an important role in metabolizing and recycling certain plant compounds and drugs,” reports Ming Hu, a professor in University of Houston.

The new information could help chemists develop better drugs and doctors fine-tune medication dosing, especially when a patient takes multiple drugs at the same time.

Scientists have long recognized that bile(胆汁) acid is produced in the liver and released into the intestines and is then recycled back through the liver for reuse as the bile, Some drugs that are metabolized in the liver also go through this process.

“The liver has long been considered the most important organ for drug metabolism,” said Hu. “But we’ve shown that the intestines also play a major role in drug metabolism.”

In the experiments, the team administered 16 different types of drugs directly to the liver or intestines and then tracked what happened to the treatments. They found that some drugs and plant compounds were metabolized in the intestines and the metabolites were then transported to the liver before being cycled back into the intestines.

“In this process, the liver acts only as a recycling organ, which is rare, since the liver is known to be the metabolic ‘superstar’ organ in humans,” said Hu. “This may explain why some drugs or plant compounds have larger effects on the intestines than anticipated the body. We hope our findings will be useful for medicinal chemists to design new drugs tailored to treat intestinal diseases.”

12What is the new discovery of University of Houston researchers?

AA new cure for intestinal diseases.

BThe way the liver recycles medicines.

CA newly recognized effect of taking multiple drugs.

DThe phenomenon of drug metabolism in the intestines.

13What does the underlined word “administered” in Paragraph 6 mean?

AProduced.BStudied.CGave.DIntroduced.

14What’s the role of the liver in the newly discovered process?

AA recycling organ.BA metabolic organ.

CA transporting organ.DA drug tracking organ.

15Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

AWhere Are Drugs Metabolized?

BHow Are New Drugs Designed?

CWhat’s the Metabolic Superstar?

DWhy Are Intestinal Diseases Hard to Cure?

At first glance, the idea of living a minimalist (极简主义的) lifestyle may sound difficult, restrictive, or even boring. I was a bit doubtful when I first decided to take on minimalist living.     16     Becoming a minimalist has given me more time and freedom for what I love and value.

It’s pretty common for beginners to think that minimalism starts with hard-to-manage habits and rules.     17     Minimalism starts with your mindset, the lens through which you are viewing your life, then moves outward from there to become actionable habits and steps.

Another big misunderstanding when it comes to living a minimalist life is that the main goal of becoming a minimalist is to get rid of as much stuff as possible. Wrong again! The main goal of minimalism is to get rid of the things that don’t contribute to the value of your daily life.     18

In order to make more space for the things you value, you first have to identify what those things are. Ask yourself what your life could use more of and what you could use less of in your day-to-day life.     19     If something is annoying you in your day-to-day life, you had better address these things and keep them from dragging you down further.

20     When you’re getting started, don’t focus too much on the end result or on the most difficult things to change. Start with the easiest things to change and work your way up from there. Making small amounts of progress can help improve your motivation and inspire you to keep going.

AIt’s nothing but an excuse.

BThis couldn’t be further from the truth!

CFixing what bothers you is also necessary.

DThis leaves more space for you to boost productivity.

EBut doing so has given me a life I genuinely love living.

FSo you can make space for what’s most important to you.

GJust start simple and realize becoming a minimalist is a journey.

There were only 30 days left for the final PE exam. Jack frowned at his 1000-meter run score, another “Fail”. As the school’s well-known “coding talent,” he could develop practical apps that impressed everyone. But he just couldn’t finish the 1000-meter run. Every attempt ended with burning lungs and he always finished far behind the others, never making the passing grade. The PE teacher’s words struck him hard, “A one-sided life won’t take you far. If you can’t overcome such a small challenge, how will you face tougher ones?” Jack stared at his sneakers, sad and embarrassed.

That afternoon, Jack ran into Leo, the monitor surrounded by piles of handwritten records. “I’ve finally finished sorting this data. It took me hours,” he complained, “One sheet listed a 1000-meter result as 3’45” while another as 225 seconds; some names were written last-name-first, others first-name-last. How I wish there were a tool to collect results directly next time!”

Hearing this, Jack’s eyes lit up. “The PE office has recently been equipped with a set of smartwatches. I can develop a personalized app running on the smartwatches,” he offered excitedly. “When students run the 1000-meter race with the smartwatches on their hands, the app will automatically record their time and other data in a consistent format.”

Later on, Jack devoted all his after-school hours to the app. Having developed the app, he tried to input some data to test whether it functioned properly. However, using the previous handwritten records for testing was trickier than expected and bugs kept popping up. As Jack struggled for a solution, his eyes fell on the PE score sheet and the teacher’s words echoed, “If you can’t overcome such a small challenge…”

Suddenly an idea struck him, “What if I run and collect firsthand data myself?” he thought. “That way, I can test the app in real time and also improve my running performance.” He shared the plan with Leo, who responded with immediate support, “I’ll run with you every step of the way.”

Should Community Service be a Requirement for Graduation?

As a high school student, I firmly believe that community service should be included as a graduation requirement.

Firstly, community service should be a graduation requirement because it benefits society and promotes students’ growth. By volunteering, students develop empathy and social responsibility, which are crucial for personal development. Additionally, they gain invaluable skills like teamwork and problem-solving. If schools mandate community service, students will contribute more to their communities.

This requirement fosters compassion and strengthens society, making it essential for education.

In the following days, Jack and Leo trained on the playground with the smartwatches on. At first, Jack panted heavily after running just 200 meters, wanting to give up. But Leo cheered him on loudly and adjusted his running rhythm patiently. With the smartwatch recording every step, Jack checked the app data after each training session, fixing bugs that caused inaccurate time — keeping one by one. Gradually, Jack’s stamina improved. He could run 800 meters without stopping, and the app ran more smoothly, too.

Then came the PE exam day and Jack stood at the starting line, calm and ready. The starting gun went off. Jack followed the pace he’d practiced, neither too fast nor too slow. When he crossed the finish line, the smartwatch showed a passing score! His classmates cheered for him. The PE teacher nodded in approval. Later, the app was used in the whole grade’s 1000-meter test, collecting data accurately. Jack smiled, realizing that overcoming challenges could bring double rewards — he not only passed the exam but also created a useful app.
