中考话题复习教材内容整合——话题十:Travel and Transportation

【话题解读】

Travel and Transportation话题的教材内容涉及课标中相关话题的三大部分:旅行(Travel);交通运输方式(Modes of transportation);计划与安排(Plans and arrangements)

教材主要是基于去某地旅游的三个How(how far? How to get to? How do you feel?)为核心来统领话题的学习,从而谈及旅行去哪里(where)?”交通运输方式(Modes of transportation)怎么去(How)?”以及相关的计划与安排(Plans and arrangements)”。不过教材仅限于“Where did...? What did....? Did you ....? How was/ were...? How did you feel....?”层面,即显性的人在旅途(On the go)”;但真正意义上的travel应包括显性的On the go和隐性的In the know。所以应通过复习课程把In the know内容融入话题再学习之中,从而达到两者融合实现真正意义上的Travel enriches our body and mind.

[A] Friday, May 1st  Sunny

What a busy day!

To start off, I could hardly sleep last night because of my excitement at touring XIi’an for the first time! I’ve always wanted to visit Xi’an, and I’m finally here! Since my hotel is in a great central spot, it was very convenient to get to a lot of places. The working staff in the hotel were so friendly and warm-hearted that they gave me some good suggestions and a map at hand.

Xi’an served as an imperial capital through six dynasties in history of China. There are a lot of places to see here. My first destination is Terracotta Army. This underground army was constructed by China’s first emperor, Qin Shihuang. He wished that the army could protect him after his death. The Terrocotta Army was discovered by accident in 1974. What surprised me most is that in the army no two warriors are the same. I wonder how ancient people got such great skills!

In the afternoon, I took a bus back to the city center. There I found wherever I went, I could see the ancient city wall, which has seen the past of the city and will see the future of its development. I went on the wall and rented a bicycle to go around. The wall is high and wide. And it is safe as there are no vehicles and the wall is protected. You can choose whether to bike the entire walls or just part of wall as you like. Along the way I stopped several times, enjoying the beautiful views. At the same time, I was lost in the historic atmosphere of this ancient city. What an experience!

When I went off the wall, it was already dark. I was getting hungry for dinner. I was recommended to eat in Huimin Street, where there were a lot of delicious street food and noodles. I tasted roujiamo(Xi’an’s version of the burger) and liangpi (cold noodles). I felt like I was in a food paradise.

When I went back to the hotel, I was still excited about the experience today. Maybe this is the meaning of traveling. It not only makes me relaxed, but also is a great chance to enrich my experience. Learning is always on the way.

[B]I watched a documentary about Jiuzhai Valley several years ago. The bright blue and green lakes impressed me so much. Since then, I have been looking forward to visiting it myself. Finally, my dream came true!

The gorgeous color of the various lakes is truly one of the most amazing views I have ever seen. Among all the lakes, the Jade-colored Lake, which is the smallest haizi in the park, interested me the most. From the documentary I watched, the color of it was the most colorful. When I got there, I found that it was as beautiful as I imagined. Sadly, it was much smaller than in that documentary. Some rocks at the bottom of the lake were exposed. Our tour guide told us it was because a few tourists touched and entered water bodies to take photos. Besides, some waterfalls began to recede. Water is considered to be the soul of the park. What would happen if there was no water in the park?

While I was worrying about the future of the park, I noticed that some tourists were smoking in the park, which might cause a terrible forest fire. What’s more, some tourists even walked off the wooden track and trampled down the grass especially when it was crowded on the track.

At the end of the day, I couldn’t wait to go to the village at the foot of the mountain, hoping to experience Tibetan people’s daily life. However, it was such a disappointment that all I saw was people wearing clothes of Han-style. I was told that traditional Tibetan costumes were no longer the first choice to local people in daily life except in those important days. Although a few Tibetans who are over 60 still wear traditional clothes every day, most of local people prefer to wear clothes similar to the ones Han people use, because they are more convenient to wear and keep. Besides, most houses there are built out of concrete instead of woods. With the development of tourism, more and more houses have been rebuilt to restaurants, hotels and hostels. And the owners of the houses can get a large amount of money depending on the location and area of the house, which greatly improved the local people’s life. But at the same time, young people there are slowly abandoning their traditional way of life. How can we keep traditional culture as well as develop the local economy? This is a question we have to think about.

[C] Jack’s vacation plan

It’s almost the end of junior high. I am so sad to part with my teachers and classmates. However, I’m also looking forward to the coming vacation! As an old saying goes, “It is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.” I have a big plan for this exciting vacation. I’m going to Tibet!

Firstly, I am going to drive to Lhasa. I know it’s really a long distance and it’s going to take me about one week to get there. But I can enjoy the wonderful views along the way. So it’s worth the trouble. And if possible, I plan to search for some partners online to share my car, which can cut the cost.

Secondly, packing lightly is also considered. I will only bring the things I really need. And I’m going to bring my own towels, slippers and tooth brush instead of using the ones provided by the hotels. It’s also important for me to bring some reusable bags.

Thirdly, eating and drinking locally is something I’m eager to do. On the one hand, I’m very curious about the food that I have never tasted like suyou tea and zanba. On the other hand, I can also play a small role in supporting the development of the area I’m visiting.

I’m really looking forward to my graduation trip. Hope it can be an unforgettable experience in my life.

[D] Dear Betty,

During the summer holiday, I went on a tour of Tibet, known as “the roof of the world”, with my parents by plane. During my trip I was deeply impressed by the breathtaking scenery --- the fantastic highland, the fresh air, and the snow mountains. In the company of the guide, we paid a visit to the grand Potala and Tibet Museum to learn about its history and culture, where we bought brilliant souvenirs. After that, we went to relax ourselves by bathing in the hot springs in Yangbajing near Lhasa. Besides, we had an opportunity to come to the Tibetan families to experience the local life and unique customs, and tasted a variety of delicious food.

What fun it is to travel there! I hope you can see it yourself.

Yours,

Li Hua

[E] Modern transportation has been a part of our life and brings us lots of convenience. If I go to a foreign country, I would take a plane because it takes only a few hours to get there. I like going to other provinces in my country by high-speed train or plane, because they are both comfortable and fast in China. If I want to travel around the province I live in, I can take a coach or bus because many bridges connect with different places to make travel easier. With the development of transportation, we shorten the time of traveling. What’s more, it not only helps people to see the world, but also make our country grow stronger and stronger. In the near future, the transportation of our country will be like a net and help us to be richer and stronger.
