Part I

Writing (30 minutes)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay that begins with the sentence “Nowadays, more and more students have realized the importance of self-discipline in their personal growth.” You can make comments, cite examples or use your personal experiences to develop your essay. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.

You should copy the sentence given in quotes at the beginning of your essay.

Nowadays, more and more students have realized the importance of self-discipline in their personal growth. Beneath this seemingly commonplace observation lies a deeper reckoning: in a hyperconnected campus ecology where attention is relentlessly monetized, self-discipline has become a form of quiet resistance. For university students navigating algorithm-driven temptations and compressed timelines, it is no longer a soft virtue but a core competency.

Fundamentally, self-discipline reframes freedom. It is not the license to indulge every impulse, but the capacity to govern one’s choices with intention. The student who curates study blocks, filters digital noise, and commits to long-term goals is not missing out; rather, they are playing the long game. As the saying goes, no pain, no gain—but more precisely, no restraint, no trajectory. Discipline, in this sense, converts fleeting effort into cumulative advantage.

Yet, to equate discipline with rigid austerity would be a category error. Sustainable self-regulation entails calibrated flexibility: strategic rest, reflective adjustment, and an awareness of diminishing returns. My own experience suggests that micro-habits—small, repeatable acts—often outperform grand but unsustainable resolutions.

Ultimately, self-discipline is less about control than about alignment: aligning daily actions with enduring aspirations. In an era of noise, it is this alignment that distinguishes those who drift from those who deliberately chart their course.
