Have you ever wondered why penguins don't freeze in the freezing Antarctic temperatures? Scientists have discovered several amazing tricks that help these birds stay warm.
The first secret lies in their feathers. Penguins have a special layer of short, tightly packed feathers covered with a waterproof oil. This creates an insulating (隔热的) air layer next to their skin. On top of that, they have a thick layer of fat under their skin, which works like a winter coat you can never take off.
But the most surprising trick is their social behavior. When the weather gets extremely cold, emperor penguins gather together in large huddles (挤作一团) that can include thousands of birds. They take turns moving from the cold outer edge to the warm center. Scientists have found that the temperature inside a penguin huddle can reach up to 37.5°C, even when the outside temperature is -40°C!
Another fascinating method is something called the "countercurrent heat exchange system" in their feet. Blood going to their cold feet passes right next to blood coming back into the body. The warm blood heats up the cold blood, so the penguin doesn't lose too much body heat through its feet.
1. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. How penguins find food in the Antarctic.
B. How penguins take care of their babies.
C. How penguins stay warm in cold environments.
D. How penguins build their homes.
2. How many warming tricks are introduced in the passage?
A. Two.
B. Three.
C. Four.
D. Five.
3. What does the underlined word "huddles" in Paragraph 3 mean?

B. Standing together in a large, tight group.
C. Building nests with stones.
D. Laying eggs under warm rocks.
4. Which paragraph explains the social behavior of penguins for warmth?
A. Paragraph 1.
B. Paragraph 2.
C. Paragraph 3.
D. Paragraph 4.
5. From which paragraph does the author begin to introduce ways beyond the penguins' body structure?
A. Paragraph 1.

The Power of a Small Kindness
A small kindness can make a big difference. I still remember last winter when an old woman was struggling to carry her heavy bags up the stairs in the subway station. A young boy, about my age, noticed her and immediately offered to help. He carried the bags all the way to the exit, refusing any thanks.
The old woman's face lit up with a smile that warmed everyone around. That moment taught me that kindness doesn't need to be grand. Even the simplest act — a helping hand, a warm smile, a word of encouragement — can brighten someone's world. I believe that when we all do small kind things, the world becomes a much better place. Kindness is like a ripple: it starts small but spreads far and wide.
