Robots can already shop, cook and clean. Now they can run half marathons (21.1 km). In Beijing last Sunday, robots crossed the finish line ahead of humans for the first time. And they didn’t even sweat.
Human runners fell to the ground, red-faced and tired. But the robots stood tall and unhurt. The winning robot, named Lightning, was made by Honor company. It finished the race in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. That is faster than the human world record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds, set by a Ugandan runner in March.
This is a big improvement from last year’s first robot race. In 2023, the winning robot took 2 hours and 40 minutes—more than twice the human winner’s time. Most robots couldn’t even finish. This year, several robots ran faster than professional human athletes. Nearly half of them navigated the race by themselves, without remote control.
Engineer Du Xiaodi said Lightning was developed for one year. Its legs are designed like those of top human runners. It uses liquid cooling technology from smartphones, which will change many industries, such as manufacturing.
Audience members were impressed. Sun Zhigang said, “This is the first time robots have beaten humans in a race. I never imagined that.” Wang Wen added, “Robots might bring new possibilities to sports and daily life.”
However, there were small problems. One robot fell at the start line. Another had to stop because of a technical error. Even so, the race was seen as a big step forward for AI and robotics. It shows how fast technology is developing, and gives us hope for a smarter future.

1. How long did the winning robot Lightning take to finish the half marathon?

A. 57 minutes and 20 seconds

B. 50 minutes and 26 seconds

C. 2 hours and 40 minutes

D. 1 hour and 10 minutes

2. Why does the writer mention human runners “fell to the ground” and robots “stood tall” in paragraph 2?

A. To show that robots are stronger than humans in every way.

B. To describe the weather conditions during the race.

C. To highlight the advantages of robots over humans.

D. To explain how robots were controlled remotely.

3. What can we infer from engineer Du Xiaodi’s words?

A. Robots will never be used in factories.

B. The robot race was a complete failure.

C. Smartphones are more important than robots.

D. Running technology can help improve industrial products.

4. What is Sun Zhigang’s attitude towards the robots’ victory?

A. Surprised and impressed.

B. Angry and disappointed.

C. Bored and uninterested.

D. Worried and scared.

5. Where is this text most likely taken from?

A. A science fiction novel.

B. A news report.

C. A robot instruction manual.

D. A history textbook

It finished the race in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. 因此选B。

2 C

4 A

Sun Zhigang 说:“This is the first beaten humans. I never imagined that.”
