Currently, there is a hotly debated issue about whether high-level computer skills are a key factor that results in career success. Personally, I largely believe that these skills are not essential.
First and foremost, in many traditional industries, occupations like teachers, doctors, lawyers and bus drivers, rely heavily on relevant professional knowledge and skills. An excellent teacher needs lots of academic knowledge and practical teaching experience that are helpful for cultivating a student, contributing significantly to success of career. On the other hand, computer skills are only a way to help them work slightly more conveniently.
Also, communication skills, rather than advanced computer skills, are necessary to the success in careers like salespersons, insurance agents and tour guides. The ability to communicate clearly and build good relationships with customers is the critical element to judging their performance. These jobs focus on face-to-face interaction and require staff to understand customers’ needs quickly, solve problems patiently and offer suitable suggestions in time.
It is undeniable that some careers need high-level computer skills, such as data analysis, video editing and programming. This is because they need to spent plenty of time working in office in front of their computers to handle tasks. They need outstanding relevant skills to improve their work efficiency. Individuals working in these industries must be proficient in technical abilities to complete their tasks efficiently.
In conclusion, although computer skills are useful for almost every industry, only a small number of professions require high-level computer skills. Therefore, people working in non-technological industries do not have to master complex computer knowledge, and mastering the relevant professional skills is the key to their success.
