三年前,广州斐特思G12的Iris因中考失利转入国际学校,上课要靠翻译软件才能听懂;

Iris

Three years ago, Iris, now in Grade 12 at FCG, transferred to an international school after an unsatisfactory result in the high school entrance examination. At the time, she relied on translation software just to follow lessons.

Three years later, she holds offers from leading universities, including University College London, King’s College London, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Melbourne, and the University of Sydney.

Iris’s story may offer an answer to a question many parents have:

How can a student who changes track midway, without a strong foundation in English, succeed within the international education system?

A More Challenging Path Than Expected

Before joining FCG in Grade 10, Iris followed a conventional academic path, like many students in China—studying and sitting exams step by step. Her setback in the high school entrance exam became the first major turning point in her life. Not gaining admission to her preferred school, she made the bold decision to try a different path.

This path proved more challenging than she had anticipated.

Without the benefit of long-term immersion in an international school environment, Iris initially struggled to follow lessons and often relied on translation tools to understand key points. When she progressed to A-Level, the academic demands increased sharply. The workload multiplied, and she experienced, for the first time, a sense of being overwhelmed.

“I was afraid of not doing well; afraid of writing poorly, afraid of underperforming, even hesitant to complete assignments.” After receiving a B in a mathematics mock exam, she felt completely discouraged: “I had done so many practice questions—why couldn’t I achieve a better result?”

Her mathematics teacher, Vince, recognised her difficulties and helped Iris develop a structured study plan, organised past papers to target her weak areas, and provided one-on-one support during study sessions. Even when Iris sent questions late at night, she responded promptly. They frequently held video calls to step through problem-solving approaches.

Learning to Break Down Goals

In Grade 11, her university guidance counsellor set a clear plan for applying to G5 universities: participate in competitions, complete an EPQ, maintain strong academic results, and begin preparing the personal statement.

“I spent my IGCSE years focusing on improving my English, so I didn’t have the capacity to join competitions. Starting in Grade 11 meant I was later than many others.” During periods of worry, her physics teacher and mentor, Lily, regularly spoke with her; helping Iris organise her preparation and manage her pace.

Gradually, Iris learned how to break down her goals.

“For example, if I knew I had a competition in October, I would plan daily practice and set targets for how many papers to complete each week. By the end of the week, I realised I had achieved quite a lot.”

Lily supported Iris throughout her three years at FCG. Every student at the school is assigned a mentor, who monitors their well-being and character development, while also providing academic guidance, advice, encouragement, and support.

Her chemistry teacher, Demi, consistently encouraged her to participate in competitions: “What you learn becomes truly your own, and your way of thinking will be different from others.”

In one competition, Iris encountered a question on carbon dioxide catalysts that required applying theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. “These competitions helped me better understand the connection between chemical engineering and the real world and made my thinking more dynamic.”

That year, Iris achieved remarkable results: a Gold Award in the UK Chemistry Olympiad (UKChO), a National Silver Award in the Physics Bowl, and a Bronze Award in the Australian Science Olympiads Chemistry (ASOC).

Not Chasing Prestige Blindly, but Finding the Right Fit

Ahead of the application season, her teachers developed a clear strategy: minimise weaknesses and maximise strengths.

“My speaking skills are not my strongest area, and interviews are not where I have a clear advantage,” Iris explained. While Imperial College London is highly regarded, she chose not to apply impulsively.

“Although my physics results were stronger than chemistry, I wasn’t particularly interested in physics.” Together with her university counsellor, she carefully reviewed university websites and course structures. Considering her strengths and interests, she chose to apply for Chemical Engineering.

Her teachers also helped her establish a balanced application strategy, including safety, target, and reach universities. “I understood where my abilities stood, which gave me confidence and reassurance.”

When writing her personal statement, Iris initially included general claims such as “I am resilient.” Her counsellor advised her to avoid abstract statements and instead focus on storytelling.

She then wrote about visiting a cosmetics factory, where she observed how machines precisely control temperature and production speed. This experience helped her understand why products made in a laboratory can vary, while factories achieve consistent large-scale production. A staff member explained that these settings are the result of extensive testing to find optimal solutions. This experience allowed Iris to see the close connection between chemical engineering and real-world applications and strengthened her desire to apply her knowledge to benefit society.

She also described how she independently researched the material strength of different fishing rods and lines—reviewing academic papers, conducting comparative experiments, and presenting her findings through a presentation—while managing her time effectively.

“University counsellors are the people who understand you. They help you tell your own story and guide you towards the path that suits you best.”

Reflecting on her application journey, Iris summarised it in one sentence:

“Stay humble, work hard, and never give up. Through exploration and persistence, gradually turn your passion into a clear path.”
