Trees are close companions in our daily life. Although they cannot speak, we can still connect with them by hugging and observing them.
As we step into a summer filled with greenery, many people are excited to embrace nature. The trend of tree-hugging therapy has once again made waves on social media. Those who have tried “tree hugging” say it can ease stress and anxiety and help people give it a heartfelt hug. The practice is quite simple: step outside, find a park, find a tree that catches your eye, open your arms, hug it and quietly feel the connection.
But does “tree hugging” really have such magical effects? The answer is: yes! Research shows that spending some time each day hugging a tree can indeed lower stress, lift your mood, boost immunity, and even change your brain chemistry to make you feel happier. Tree hugging helps increase the level of oxytocin, there’s actually quite a lot you can do. You can study a tree by examining the bark’s texture and color and searching for pores on the trunk that allow the tree to “breathe”. You can tell single leaves from compound leaves, observe the shape, edges, tips and veins of the leaves, and even touch and smell them. If you come across a tree in bloom, you can examine the flower’s shape, color, scent and structure to help quickly identify the species. You can also engage with a tree’s life story. It all started with a video on Xiaohongshu where an 18-year-old high school student called Liu Yiyang from Guangdong shared his cool invention. Many people wanted to buy it from him or asked for a tutorial.
Liu has designed both hardware and software. One of his inventions is an app called “Sam”, which is also Liu’s English name. “The app keeps the tools I often use in one place, like my browser, environmental noise monitoring, QR code generation.” He said. So far, a lot of people have downloaded the app.
The idea of a canteen card phone wasn’t his original idea. The concept was already popular on the internet. “Seeing that everyone was asking for a tutorial, I made one myself and shared a video on my Xiaohongshu,” Liu said. However, Liu realized that the idea could also have a bad influence on young people. He once talked to a primary school student on WeChat who planned to use a lunch card phone at school, hoping his teachers wouldn’t realize. “I canceled all the orders,” Liu said, “Now I only keep the phones I have already made as a reminder of my work.”
This situation made Liu reflect on the role of technology, which he believes is a double-edged sword. “As innovators, we should consider the negative impacts of what we create, and my lunch card phone is a good example of that,” Liu said. In Xi’an Chanba International Port, Xi’an people can enjoy noodles made from Kazakhstan flour. And at Zhengzhou East Railway station, Henan people can buy German milk, French wine and Italian coffee beans. All these products are available thanks to the China-Europe freight trains. On November 28, 2023, the X8086 China-Europe freight train left Chengdu for Malaszewice, Poland, marking the 120,000th journey of these amazing trains.
China-Europe freight train operations began in March 2011. Two years later, after the Belt and Road Initiative started, the train service grew quickly.
A large logistics network has now been set up. The Chinese cities involved have grown from only a few to 128, connecting with 232 cities in 26 European countries and over 100 cities in 11 Asian countries. This steel network has opened new paths for inland areas that are neither coastal nor close to other countries, covering the whole Eurasian continent.
The 120,000 train trips have carried over 50,000 types of goods. At first, they carried mainly light industrial products, but now high-value goods such as cars, machinery and electronics are their main exports.
A technology company from Chengdu supplies smart meters to power companies in Europe. In the past, it took 60 days to ship the products by sea. Now thanks to freight trains, it takes only about 30 days. Also, as more trains are running, transportation costs have fallen by more than 40 percent, uniting communities. Meanwhile, the trains have greatly changed the regions. For example, Chongqing’s export business grows by 30 percent each year and Xi’an has become a major electronics hub.
In Europe, Malaszewice has become a key logistics center, and 20,000 new jobs have been created in Duisburg, Germany. China-Europe freight trains go beyond transporting goods, connecting the world and uniting communities. They offer stable, efficient, low-cost logistics solutions as global logistics costs rise and supply chain issues increase for businesses.
