In one of his paintings,Edward Ssajjabbitells a story about the Beijing Winter Olympics as theworld fights against the COVID-19. The art piece also shows three people pushing the virus(病毒) into fire as a scientist does research. It also shows a lamp, which stands for the light of life.
Ssajjabbi was born in a village of Uganda. As a little boy,he often went to his father's bar. There a painter showed him his work. "I admired the way he created his paintings.I loved to watch him when he was painting. When he left,I started to visit our bar with paper and pencils. I copied what he did,"he says."This is how I found myself getting into art."
Ssajjabbi's paintings are mostly about traveling.culture and life in the countryside of Uganda. He has traveled the world because of art. His first visit to China was in 2019 when he was invited to attend the eighth Beijing International Art Biennale(北京国际美术双年展).Early this year, Ssajjabbi attended this event for the second time. “There are many artists from different countries who take part in this biennale. By doing this, African artists are exchanging their culture with the rest of the world through their works."he says.
Back home, Ssajjabbi shared his China experience with his students at Kabale University."Through art, one can love and also inspire others to love their culture. The Chinese have kept their culture. And they are sharing it with the rest of the world through art. We need to learn from them,"he told his students.
Ssajjabbi says that he hopes to use his knowledge to guide students at higher levels of education,especially in research,and to also improve his painting.
