Honey   from the African⁽¹⁾ forest is not only a kind   of natural sugar , it is also delicious⁽²⁾ . Most people , and many   animals , like eating⁽³⁾ it . However , the only way   for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees' nest and take the   honey from it . Often , these nests are high up in trees , and it is   difficult to find them . In parts of Africa , though , people and animals looking⁽⁴⁾ for honey have a strange and unexpected⁽⁵⁾helper⁽⁶⁾ -- a little bird called a honey guide .

The   honey guide does not actually like honey , but it does like the wax⁽⁷⁾ in the beehives⁽⁸⁾ . The little bird cannot   reach this wax⁽⁷⁾ , which is deep inside the   bees' nest . So , when it finds a suitable⁽⁹⁾nest , it looks for someone to help   it . The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing⁽¹⁰⁾ animals and people . Once it has their attention ,   it flies through the forest , waiting from time to time for the curious   animal or person as it leads them to the nest . When they finally   arrive at the nest , the follower⁽¹¹⁾ reaches   in to get the delicious⁽²⁾ honey as the bird patiently⁽¹²⁾ waits and watches . Some of the honey , and the wax⁽⁷⁾ , always falls to the ground , and this is when the   honey guide takes its share .

Scientists   do not know why the honey guide likes eating⁽³⁾ the wax⁽⁷⁾ , but it is very determined⁽¹³⁾ in its efforts to get it . The birds seem to be   able to smell wax⁽⁷⁾ from a long distance away .   They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper⁽¹⁴⁾ is taking honey from his beehives , and will even   enter churches when beeswax⁽¹⁵⁾ candles   are being lit ..

Last   Friday , I was coming home late after spending⁽²⁰⁾ time   with friends and thought I'd go down to the $99 cent pizza place . So with a few slices in hand , I went back to join   him . I asked him if he was hungry . He said yes , but not for pizza because   it made him uncomfortable . He'd rather have a few bucks for chicken and rice   since it was easier on his stomach . It's funny , in that moment , he became   more real to me .

This   man I had seen almost every day was someone with specific conditions , needs   , and experiences . We exchanged names and ended up talking⁽²⁶⁾ for a little over an hour that night as Kevin told   me stories from his life , how he had done things when " he was younger   and didn't know any better⁽²⁷⁾ "   and how he tried to make amends⁽²⁸⁾ ,   but too much time had passed⁽²⁹⁾ .   He shared⁽³⁰⁾ his   views on the value for young adults to learn the history of other people .
