Passage

The   Language of Signs

When   we do not understand each other's language , we talk with the help of signs .

Frenchman(1) was once traveling(2) in England(3) . He could(4) not speak English at all .   One day he went into a restaurant(5) and sat down at a table .   When the waiter(6) came , he opened his mouth(7) , put his fingers(8) into it and took them out   again . He wanted to say , " Bring me something to eat ."

The waiter(6) soon brought him a cup(9) of tea(10) .   The man moved his head from side to side . The waiter(6) understood him and took away the tea(10) . In a moment , he brought a cup(9) of coffee(11) and   put it on the table . The man again moved his head from side to side . He   moved his head from side to side whenever(12) the  waiter(6) brought him something to drink . He brought him a   lot of different drinks , but drinks are not food , of course .

When   the man was going away , another man came in. This man saw the waiter(6) , and he put his hands on his stomach(13) . That was enough : in a few minutes , there was a   large plate(14) of meat(15) and vegetables(16) on   the table in front of him .

So ,   you see , we cannot understand the language of signs so well as the language   of words .

Passage 1

Passage 2
