It was a summer afternoon a long time ago. I was a little boy watching my favourite rerun(重播) on our tiny little television set. All that was about to change, however. CRACK! BOOM! The lightening and thunder sounded. I was so frightened that I sat up on the sofa immediately. There was a line of snow flashing across the TV screen.

Suddenly my mum ran into the living room, unhooked the antenna(天线) wire and dropped the metal claws(钳子) into a glass jar by the TV. Seeing this, I started to complain but knew that Mum wasn't going to risk lightening hitting our antenna, running through the wire, and blowing up our only TV set. Since there was no way she was going to let me go outside and play either, I settled into my chair and reread a book for the tenth time while she placed empty coffee cans under the leaks in the roof which my dad hadn't had a chance to fix yet.

After a while, my mum walked to me and asked me if I could play cards with her. As I had no natural interest in the game of bridge, I refused her without hesitation. She looked at me with her imploring(恳求的)eyes. But I said nothing and buried my head in the book again even though there was no other attractions to me in it. She walked away quietly with a sigh(叹息).

Later after the lightening and thunder had passed and only a gently falling rain remained, I saw my mum walk
out onto our back porch(门廊), sit down on our old porch swing and winch the rain. She loved watching it water the flowers, forests and gardens. She enjoyed seeing it swell( 使膨胀ie river down the hill from our house. She knew it would be providing water to drink and wash and clean andume. She had told me all this many times too, but my young mind was too selfish then to take all in. All 1 kmewggos that rainstorms meant no TV and no playing outside.

This time, though, I took the time to watch it fall.

The next time it rains, I'll turn off my TV, computer, and phone.

范文:

This time, though, I took the time to watch it fall. I didn't see anything interesting in the rain, only bored with it. Now I have grown up and have my own family and business. Today is a rainy summer day, I visit my mother,f inding her sitting on our porch swing watching the rain. Mother's face is already covered with wrinkles. This timeI  accompany her to watch the rain, which waters everything and washes away the dust. I come to understand why she likes to watch the rain.

The next time it rains, I'll turn off my TV, computer, and phone. Because I understand why my mother likes to watch the rain so much, and I feel guilty for my behavior when I was young. Watching the rain quietly with my mother is the most beautiful moment for me. When I look at the rain, it seems that all the chaos in the world has been transported away from me. When I look at the rain, my heart is at the most quiet and leisure moment. Rain, I love you. Mom, I love you.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Kuppan was a good badminton player. His rise within the ranks of the badminton players of the school was impressive but unusual. One day he was nothing and the next day he was a member of the school team.

In the School Championships, he sprang a surprise by knocking out the top seed, Richard Lee, in the semi-final. In the final, he easily beat another competitor Abdul Rauf 15-3 and 15-10. He was the School Champion. It was unbelievable. The previous year he did not even get past the first round while this year he was the champion.

Success got into his head. He began to think he was really good. In fact, he arrogantly (傲慢地) told Richard Lee and the others that they would never beat him. He claimed he was simply too good for them in a league of his own.

Well, it was true that Kuppan was a good and skillful player. He had natural ability and talent. So he picked up the game very quickly and soon became the best. However, he did not realize that nobody can remain at the top all the time. What goes up must certainly come down. Kuppan thought he could stay up indefinitely.

The other players were annoyed by Kuppan's declaration. They decided to train harder to beat the guy who had insulted (羞辱) them. They even trained on their own every day while Kuppan wandered around talking with pride about his success. The State Individual Championships were coming up, so was the Interschool Tournament. The school's coach worked hard to improve the school players. All of them trained hard, except Kuppan. He would miss training or perform half-heartedly. He was more interested in entertaining the admirers that gathered around him. He thought he was too strong to be defeated.

The State Individual Championships reached us in time.

Kuppan tried to make a difference in the second round.

范文:

The State Individual Championships reached us in time. At 7:30, Kuppan stepped onto the court confidently to meet his unknown competitor. It would not take long to finish the first round, he thought. The moment the first service was played, Kuppan found it was not going to be as easy as he had thought. He had great trouble performing his shots. After ten minutes on the court, he was sweating and out of breath. He looked washed out and listless. A couple of minutes later he lost the first round by 9-15.

Kuppan tried to make a difference in the second round. His competitor was simply too strong. Kuppan was defeated in the second round by 1-15. It was a great shame for him. He could not believe it but there it was. The next day the coach told Kuppan he had been dropped from the school team for the coming Interschool Tournament. Kuppan realized how foolish he had been. He finally knew that pride comes before a fall. He learned this lesson in a hard and painful way. He would not like to repeat this ever again.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mrs. Rilcy and I always shout at cach other. I shout because she can't hear me, and she shouts because she can't hear herself. "What do you need from the store?" I'll yell. "Bananas," she'll yell back.

You don't realize what a funny word bananas is until you hear it shouted by an eighty-year-old woman. I work for Mrs. Riley. I buy groceries for her at the supermarket on Nostrand Avenue, and sometimes I dust and sweep her apartment. The best part, though, is taking care of Sam. Sam is Mrs. Riley's canary(金丝雀). He's bright yellow, and he sings all the time. That's one thing about canaries. They're always cheerful. That's what I'm saving my money for. I'm going to buy a canary, And besides the canary, I have to get a cage and swings and toys and food.

"Do you have enough money yet, girl?" Mrs. Riley always shouts at me. "Not yet," I shout back. “Soon." And she always calls me girl, not Carla. Sometimes I think she doesn't remember my name.

Anyway, one day I ran upstairs to Mrs. Riley's. She leaves the door unlocked when she knows I'm coming. She wasn't in her usual place by the window. She was in bed. “Are you sick?" I shouted. "Yes, girl. You can't work for me anymore," Mrs. Riley said. She coughed, I have to take medicine, and it costs a lot. I can't pay you."

I felt sick to my stomach. How would I find another job? I went over and stuck my finger in Sam's cage. He hopped on his swing and chirped hello. Then I tured and left.

That night at dinner I couldn't cat. "You'll find another job," Mom said, sitting back in her chair, “I feel sorry for her, Carla. She's so alone up there." Then Mom leaned over and gave me a hug. "T'm glad we have each other,” she said. Mom always makes me feel better. I was able to eat after all.

However, that night I kept thinking about my canary and Mrs. Riley.

After one week, she said, “I've been thinking, girl, since I can't pay you, I'll-I'll give you Sam

范文:

However, that night I kept thinking about my canary and Mrs. Riley. It wasn't fair that Mrs. Riley had to get sick. How would I buy a canary of my own? Then I thought about what Mom had said. Mrs. Riley was more alone than I was. At least I had Mom. Mrs. Riley only had Sam. How would she get things from the store without me? All these thoughts haunted me the whole night. The next day I ran upstairs with a bag of groceries. Mrs. Riley was still in bed. I emptied the bag, put the milk in the tiny refrigerator, and then began dusting around. Sam hopped on his swing as I dusted the top of his cage.

After one week, she said, “I've been thinking, girl, since I can't pay you, I'll-I'll give you Sam.” My breath caught in my throat. I couldn't believe it. Sam. All mine. Sam looked at me. He chirped, as if to say, “Well?” I considered it. Someday I'd have enough money to buy a canary of my own. But Mrs. Riley would never get another one. Plus, if I took Sam, Mrs. Riley would be all alone. Could I take him? Sam waited. Mrs. Riley waited. “I can't take Sam,” I said. “He belongs to you. And I’ll keep working for you. You don't have to pay me.” This time Mrs. Riley heard me, without my shouting.
