Sets and Intervals: Making Sense of the Symbols

The symbols may look unfamiliar, but the idea is simple: find all real numbers greater than −1 and at most 3. Start by putting the mathematics into everyday words.

A={1,2,3}
2∈A,读作“2属于A”;5∉A,读作“5不属于A”。
A set is a collection of distinct objects. Each object is an element. The symbol ∈ means “belongs to,” and the order of the elements does not matter.
B={x∈R|-1<x≤3}
Read the condition carefully. R means real numbers, so decimals and fractions can qualify too. Z means integers; with that restriction, only 0, 1, 2 and 3 remain.

An interval describes a continuous range of real numbers. Parentheses exclude an endpoint; square brackets include it. On a number line, use an open circle for an excluded endpoint and a filled dot for an included one.

Infinity is not a real-number endpoint that can be included. Always use a parenthesis next to +∞ or −∞.

设A=[-1,3],B=(1,5]。
交集A∩B:既在A里面,也在B里面。
A要求-1≤x≤3,B要求1<x≤5。
A∩B=(1,3]。
A∪B=[-1,5]。
The intersection contains elements in both sets. The union contains elements in at least one set. A union does not fill gaps between separate intervals.

The set {1, 3} has only two elements, while [1, 3] contains every real number between them. Touching intervals share an endpoint only when both include it. The empty set ∅ is different from {0}.
例如A={x∈R|x>-2},B={x∈R|x≤1},求A∩B。
Check the number system, translate the conditions, draw the ranges, and test the endpoints. These four steps turn unfamiliar notation into a clear picture.

A=[-2,2],B=(0,5),求A∩B和A∪B。
[-3,2)。
0<x≤4。
A∩B=(0,2];A∪B=[-2,5)。
Try the questions before checking the answers. For every bracket, explain whether the endpoint is included and why.
Build understanding one small distinction at a time. Reading conditions and checking endpoints will also help with inequalities and function domains.
