The Buddy Bench
There is now a bright yellow bench at the edge of our playground. On its backrest, someone has painted three words: HAVE A SEAT. The bench was Mia's idea. Last winter, a new boy named Sam joined our class halfway through the year, and at break time he always stood by the fence alone. One evening Mia watched a video about a school in another country where children who wanted company sat on a special bench, and someone always came to join them.
It took our class two weekends to paint an old bench yellow and carry it to the playground. The rules are simple. If you sit on the bench, it means you are looking for someone to play with. If you see somebody sitting there, you should walk over and say hello. Nobody has to explain why they are sitting, and nobody is forced to stay.
Sam was the first person to use it. He sat there on a Monday morning, and within a minute two boys from the football club called him over to join their game. He is now one of the loudest voices on the playground. Two terms later, the bench is almost never empty for long. Some students sit there just to rest in the sun, and that is allowed too.
Our head teacher liked the idea so much that she bought a second bench for the lower playground, where the younger pupils play. "Friendship needs a place to start," she said. For Sam, that place was a yellow bench by the fence.
11. Why did Mia want a special bench in the playground?
A. To give pupils a place to eat lunch.
B. To help students find someone to play with.
C. To make the playground look brighter.
D. To stop students from standing by the fence.
12. What should you do if you see someone sitting on the bench?
A. Walk over and say hello.
B. Ask why they are sitting there.
C. Wait until they leave the bench.
D. Tell the head teacher about it.
13. What happened to Sam after he first used the bench?
A. He painted the bench with his classmates.
B. He decided to join the football club at once.
C. He was invited to join a game right away.
D. He went back to the fence and stood alone.
14. What do we know about the bench now?
A. Only new students are allowed to sit on it.
B. Students also use it simply to rest.
C. It is usually empty at break time.
D. It has been moved to the lower playground.
15. What does the head teacher's words in the last paragraph mean?
A. Making friends needs a starting point.
B. Friendship is more important than study.
C. Students should make friends on the Internet.
D. Every school must buy yellow benches.
3. A "每个班设计______自己的" → 主语 each class 为单数,用 its。their 对应复数;his/her 指人,与 class 不符。
4. C "我画的猫看起来更像______个土豆" → look like「看起来像」,与 more 构成 more like → like。after/for/at 均不与 look 搭配表达"像"。
8. C "我们以'最有趣团队'奖结束了这一天" → finish the day with sth「以…… for「为了」、against「反对」、without「没有」均不合搭配。
complain about 为固定搭配;worries 需接 about/over 但语义是"担心",与"搬椅子行动"的因果不如 complain 贴切;forgets「忘记」、learns「学会」不合语境。
If you see somebody sitting there, you should walk over and say hello." Nobody has to explain why"相反;C「等他们离开」、D「报告老师」文中未提。
13. C 第三段:"He sat there on a Monday morning, and within a minute two boys from the football club called him over to join their game."
Some students sit there just to rest in the sun, and that is allowed too."
15. A 校长说:"Friendship needs a place to start."
