Although online resources have transformed access to information, I disagree that libraries have become obsolete, as they provide suitable study environments and ensure that knowledge remains accessible to people from all backgrounds.
One major reason for retaining libraries is that their role extends well beyond lending books. They offer quiet, well-equipped spaces where students can concentrate for extended periods without interruption. For those living in crowded homes or sharing accommodation, such an environment may be difficult to find elsewhere. Closing libraries would therefore deprive these students of an important place to study, regardless of how much information is available online. Access to digital materials cannot, by itself, compensate for the loss of a setting conducive to learning.
Equally importantly, the availability of online resources does not mean that everyone can use them. Some people cannot afford a personal computer or a reliable internet connection, while others lack the digital skills to navigate electronic materials confidently. Libraries help bridge this gap by providing free access to printed books, computers and other learning resources. They also serve readers who prefer physical books or find prolonged screen use uncomfortable. Removing these services could restrict educational opportunities for disadvantaged groups and widen existing inequalities.
Admittedly, in communities where digital access is widespread, some conventional libraries could be converted into digital learning centres. This would allow them to reduce expenditure on storing and maintaining extensive print collections while retaining shared computers and quiet study areas. Space no longer needed for books could also be repurposed for community activities. Such changes would modernise library services without sacrificing the benefits that justify their existence.
In conclusion, while the internet may reduce the need for large physical collections, it does not eliminate the need for libraries. Their provision of quiet study spaces and equitable access to learning resources makes their continued existence valuable, even if their form and functions evolve.
