The question of GDP and its usefulness has annoyed policymakers for over half a century. Many argue that it is a flawed concept. It measures things that do not matter and misses things that do. By most recent measures, the UK's GDP has been the envy of the Western world, with record low unemployment and high growth figures.If everything was going so well, then whydidover 17 million peoplevotefor Brexit, despite the warnings about what it could do to their country's economic prospects?

A recent annual study of countries and their ability to convert growth into well-being sheds some light on that question. Across the 163 countries measured, the UK is one of the poorest performers in ensuring that economic growth is translated into meaningful improvements for its citizens. Rather than just focusing on GDP, over 40 different sets of criteria from health, education and civil society engagement have been measured to get a more rounded assessment of howcountries are performing.

Yet this is not the case with all countries. Some relatively poor European countries have seen huge improvements across measures including civil society, income equality and environment.

3132333435
DCDCA
Robert F. Kennedy is cited because he_______.(细节题)
[A] praised the UK for its GDP.
[B] identified GDP with happiness.
[C] misinterpreted the role of GDP.
[D] had a low opinion of GDP. ✓
题干人名 Robert F. Kennedy + is cited(被引用)。
"Robert F. Kennedy once said that a country's GDP measures "everything except that which makes life worthwhile.""
[A] 夸英国 GDP 好——无中生有,方向反了;
[B] 把 GDP 等同于幸福——原文恰恰说 GDP 衡量不了幸福,曲解;
[C] 误解了 GDP 的作用——作者赞同 Kennedy,"误解"属于反向干扰;
It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that_______.(推理题)
[A] the UK is reluctant to remold its economic pattern.
[B] the UK will contribute less to the world economy.
[C] GDP as the measure of success is widely defied in the UK. ✓
[D] policymakers in the UK are paying less attention to GDP.
"By most recent measures, the UK's GDP has been the envy of the Western world... If everything was going so well, then why did over 17 million people vote for Brexit, despite the warnings...?"
[A] 英国不愿重塑经济模式——文中没提;
[B] 英国对世界经济贡献将变少——无中生有;
[C] GDP 作为成功衡量标准在英国被广泛质疑(defied)——正是反问句的推论,当选 C;
Which of the following is true about the recent annual study?(细节题)
[A] It excludes GDP as an indicator.
[B] It is sponsored by 163 countries.
[C] Its criteria are questionable.
[D] Its results are enlightening. ✓
"A recent annual study of countries and their ability to convert growth into well-being sheds some light on that question."
核心短语 sheds some light on(为…… 另外注意:研究衡量的标准是"rather than just focusing on GDP"——不是只看 GDP,而非排除 GDP。
[A] 把 GDP 排除在指标之外——"rather than just focusing on"是"不只看",不是"不看",偷换;
[B] 由 163 国赞助——163 国是受测对象,不是出资方,张冠李戴;
[C] 其标准可疑——文章对该研究持肯定态度,反向干扰;
[D] 其结果有启发性——sheds some light on 的同义改写,当选 D。
In the last two paragraphs, the author suggests that_______.(观点推断题)
[A] the UK is preparing for an economic boom.
[B] high GDP foreshadows an economic decline.
[C] it is essential to consider factors beyond GDP. ✓
[D] it requires caution to handle economic issues.
定位词 the last two paragraphs + suggests(暗示、表明)。
"...as a measure, it is no longer enough. It does not include important factors such as environmental quality or education outcomes..." / "But policymakers who refocus efforts on improving well-being rather than simply worrying about GDP figures could avoid the forecasted doom and may even see progress."
[A] 英国正准备迎接经济繁荣——原文预测的是 doom(厄运),反向干扰;
[B] 高 GDP 预示经济衰退——原文说的是"增长受创可能拖累服务",没有说高 GDP 导致衰退,强加因果;
[C] 必须考虑 GDP 之外的因素——正是两段核心主张,当选 C;
Which of the following is the best title for the text?(主旨题)
[A] High GDP But Inadequate Well-being, a UK lesson ✓
[B] GDP figures, a Window on Global Economic Health
[C] Robert F. Kennedy, a Terminator of GDP
[D] Brexit, the UK's Gateway to Well-being
[A] 高 GDP 但福祉不足:一个英国的教训——完美覆盖全文,当选 A;
[B] GDP 数字是全球经济健康的窗口——文章立场是批评 GDP,此项变相吹 GDP,方向相反;
[C] Kennedy,GDP 的终结者——他只是批评 GDP,没"终结"GDP,夸大其词;
