所以今天真正值得问的不是 "Does aging make us worse?",而是:Which abilities change, in what direction, and at what age?
Joshua K. Hartshorne、Laura T. Germine,Published 2015。

People often speak about aging as if it were a single process. A young brain is imagined as fast, flexible and capable, while an old brain is assumed to be a slower and weaker version of the same system. Research paints a more complicated picture.
In 2015, psychologists Joshua Hartshorne and Laura Germine analyzed cognitive performance across tens of thousands of participants ranging widely in age. They found no single age at which the human mind reaches its overall peak. Different abilities followed different timelines. Some forms of rapid information processing were strongest relatively early in adulthood. Certain memory abilities reached their highest levels later. Other skills continued improving well into middle age.
Vocabulary showed one of the latest peaks. In some of the researchers' data, performance on vocabulary tasks was highest among people in their late sixties or early seventies. This type of accumulated knowledge is sometimes described as crystallized intelligence. It differs from fluid abilities, such as processing unfamiliar information quickly or holding several new items in working memory. The distinction helps explain why aging cannot be reduced to a single downward line. A 70-year-old may process a new symbol more slowly than a 20-year-old while possessing a much larger store of language, knowledge and experience.
Emotional development may also follow a different path from processing speed. In a long-term study, psychologist Laura Carstensen and colleagues repeatedly sampled people's everyday emotional experiences over more than a decade. Older age was associated with greater emotional stability and more positive emotional well-being. Older adults were also more likely to report a mixture of positive and negative feelings at the same time. That may sound contradictory, but emotional maturity can involve recognizing that an experience can be both painful and meaningful, joyful and temporary.
None of this means that aging has no costs. Normal aging can involve slower recall, greater difficulty multitasking and mild declines in attention. Physical health risks also increase. And some people develop serious cognitive diseases. But another distinction is essential: dementia is not a normal or inevitable part of aging. The U.S. National Institute on Aging notes that many people live into their nineties and beyond without developing dementia. Occasionally forgetting a name is not the same as losing the ability to manage everyday life. Treating all older adults as cognitively impaired therefore confuses age with disease.
This matters socially as well as scientifically. The World Health Organization uses the term ageism for stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination based on age. Ageism can appear openly, but it can also sound protective. An older person may be discouraged from learning technology, taking on responsibility or making their own decisions because others assume they are no longer capable. Such assumptions ignore enormous individual variation. Two people of the same chronological age may differ greatly in health, knowledge, memory, motivation and independence.
Aging, then, is not the opposite of development. Development continues across the life span. Some capacities weaken. Some remain stable. Some continue to grow. The more accurate question is not: "What do people lose when they grow old?" It is: "What changes — and what remains possible?"
The Asynchronous Rise and Fall of Different Cognitive Abilities
MIT 对这项研究的总结特别好:某个年龄,你可能 getting better at some things、getting worse at others,同时 remaining stable in others。 Which cognitive function are you measuring?
所以 "aging is not universal decline" 不等于 "aging causes no decline"——两句话完全不同。
Dementia is not a normal part of aging.
不是"忘没忘",而是:how much does it interfere with daily functioning?
WHO 的 Global Report on Ageism 指出:全球大约 1 in 2 people 对老年人存在 ageist attitudes。

2. risk increases ≠ inevitable
3. some abilities decline ≠ all abilities decline
4. some abilities improve later ≠ older is always better
5. slower recall ≠ loss of knowledge
6. normal forgetfulness ≠ dementia
7. average age difference ≠ every individual difference
8. care for older people ≠ remove their autonomy(这一条特别适合重阳节)
2. cognitive — cognitive abilities,
3. decline — cognitive decline,
4. peak — reach a peak,
5. vocabulary — vocabulary continues to develop,
6. stability — emotional stability,
7. dementia — dementia is not normal aging,
8. ageism — combat ageism,
3 分钟 — 画三条线:FAST PROCESSING(较早高峰)、KNOWLEDGE / VOCABULARY(继续积累)、EMOTIONAL STABILITY(可能随成年发展而改善)。 Aging is multidirectional.
Is "You are too old to learn this" a fact — or a stereotype? 结束。

National Institute on Aging — How the Aging Brain Affects Thinking
(nia.nih.gov/health/how-aging-brain-affects-thinking/)
National Institute on Aging — Memory Problems, Forgetfulness, and Aging
Dementia is not a normal part of aging.(nia.nih.gov/health/memory-loss-and-forgetfulness/memory-forgetfulness-and-aging-whats-normal-and-whats-not)

真正的 respect 里面应该有:dignity(尊严)、autonomy(自主)、individuality(个体差异)、possibility(继续发展的可能性)。
Aging is change, not a single direction.
Do not underestimate them.
