Do Older People Need Less Sleep?|
但美国 National Institute on Aging 专门把这个列进 Common Misconceptions About Aging,答案非常明确:Older adults still need about 7–9 hours of sleep each night. If older people still need sleep, why does sleep become so different with age?

National Institute on Aging — Sleep and Older Adults

Do Older People Need Less Sleep?

Older adults often go to bed earlier, wake earlier and spend more time awake during the night than younger adults. This creates a common belief: perhaps older people simply need less sleep. But sleep researchers make an important distinction between how much sleep a person gets and how much sleep the body needs.

The U.S. National Institute on Aging recommends about seven to nine hours of sleep each night for older adults, roughly the same general range advised for adulthood. What changes with age is often not the need for sleep, but the ability to produce long, deep and uninterrupted sleep.

One major change involves the body's circadian system. Human sleep is partly regulated by an internal biological clock that helps determine when we feel sleepy and when we feel alert. As people grow older, this rhythm commonly shifts earlier. An older adult may naturally become sleepy at 9 p.m. and wake at 5 a.m., while a younger adult may prefer midnight to 8 a.m. Researchers call this shift a phase advance.

Sleep structure also changes. During a normal night, the brain moves through several stages. Some are relatively light, while slow-wave sleep is deeper and harder to interrupt. With age, people generally spend less time in deep slow-wave sleep and more time in lighter stages. Nighttime awakenings also become more frequent. As a result, eight hours in bed does not necessarily mean eight continuous hours asleep. This helps explain an apparent paradox: an older adult may spend plenty of time in bed but still describe sleep as light or broken.

However, another mistake is possible. Because sleep changes with age, people may assume that any sleep problem in later life is simply "what happens when you get old." That is not true either. Insomnia, sleep apnea and other sleep disorders become more common with age, but they can still be genuine health problems rather than unavoidable features of normal aging. Pain, medications, mental health, breathing problems and other medical conditions can also disturb sleep. This distinction matters because accepting every problem as "normal aging" may prevent people from seeking useful assessment or treatment.

Sleep quality also involves more than duration. Researchers consider timing, regularity, continuity and the absence of sleep disorders, as well as the total number of hours. A person who sleeps eight hours but wakes repeatedly may have a very different experience from someone whose eight hours are largely uninterrupted.

Scientists are still investigating exactly how sleep need itself changes across later adulthood. The biology is complicated, and individuals vary greatly. But the simple statement "old people need less sleep" goes beyond the evidence. A more accurate statement is: Older people often sleep differently. That is not the same as saying: They no longer need sleep.

Sleep duration:

Sleep need:

老人可能实际只睡 6 小时——这只能证明 they slept six hours,不能自动证明 six hours was all they needed。

Question 1
Which conclusion is safest if an older adult usually sleeps six hours?
A. Six hours must be the ideal amount for all older adults.
B. The person currently sleeps about six hours, but this alone does not establish their biological sleep need.
C. All people need less sleep after age 60.
D. Sleep duration and sleep need are identical.
Answer: B

Question 2
What does a circadian "phase advance" mean?
A. A person needs no sleep.
B. Sleepiness and waking tend to occur earlier in the 24-hour cycle.
C. Deep sleep becomes longer.
D. People begin sleeping only during the daytime.
Answer: B

Question 3
What does "sleep fragmentation" refer to?
A. Sleeping in several countries during one night.
B. Sleep that is repeatedly interrupted by awakenings or shifts into lighter stages.
C. Sleeping for more than nine hours continuously.
D. Forgetting dreams after waking.
Answer: B

How well? How regularly? At what time?——这也是 AASM/SRS 睡眠共识中特别强调的一点:healthy sleep 还涉及 quality、timing、regularity 以及是否存在 sleep disorders。

Question 4
Which statement best reflects the evidence?
A. Every nighttime awakening in old age is a disease.
B. All nighttime awakenings are harmless consequences of aging.
C. Aging changes normal sleep patterns, but medical, psychological and environmental factors can also disturb sleep.
D. Medication never affects sleep.
Answer: C

Question 5
Which statement is most accurate?
A. Insomnia is inevitable and untreatable after age 60.
B. Insomnia becomes more common in older adults but should not automatically be dismissed as normal aging.
C. Anyone who wakes early has insomnia.
D. Healthy older adults cannot sleep well.
Answer: B

Question 6
Which factor is most important in addition to clock time?
A. Sleep continuity, quality and daytime functioning.
B. Whether the person owns an alarm clock.
C. Whether the bedroom faces east.
D. Whether younger people sleep later.
Answer: A

Question 7
Which statement is scientifically safest?
A. Six hours of sleep directly causes dementia.
B. Short sleep has been associated with later dementia risk, but causal direction is difficult to establish.
C. Anyone who sleeps poorly will develop dementia.
D. Dementia and sleep have no relationship.
Answer: B

2017 年的一篇重要综述甚至把这个问题直接提出:older adults 到底 need less sleep,还是 are less able to generate the sleep they need?

看到 older people often sleep less,然后推出 older people need less sleep——这中间发生了 description → biological requirement 的偷换。

Question 8
Which statement best captures the article's main argument?
A. Sleep never changes with age.
B. Older adults should sleep exactly nine hours without exception.
C. Aging changes the timing and structure of sleep, but sleeping differently does not automatically mean needing less sleep.
D. Older adults naturally develop insomnia.
Answer: C
Which of the following is the best title?
A. Why Older People No Longer Need Much Sleep
B. Do Older People Need Less Sleep? Separating Sleep Changes from Sleep Need
C. Scientists Prove Everyone Must Sleep Exactly Eight Hours
D. Why Waking at 5 A.M. Means You Are Healthy
Answer: B
A 正是文章质疑的误区;C 忽略个体差异(NIA 说的是 about 7–9 hours);D 只看 clock time。
1. sleep less ≠ need less sleep
2. sleep changes with age ≠ all sleep problems are normal
3. common ≠ inevitable
4. time in bed ≠ time asleep
5. sleep duration ≠ sleep quality
6. early waking ≠ automatically healthy
7. associated with health risk ≠ proved direct cause
8. aging ≠ complete explanation for every symptom(这一组特别适合重阳节)
1. circadian — circadian rhythm,
2. phase — a phase advance,
3. fragmented — fragmented sleep,
4. continuity — sleep continuity,
5. insomnia — chronic insomnia,
6. apnea — sleep apnea,
7. restorative — restorative sleep,
8. inevitable — not an inevitable part of aging,
My grandpa sleeps only six hours, so older people need less sleep. 问学生:Fact or assumption? 然后拆成 Observation(Grandpa sleeps six hours)和 Conclusion(Older people need six hours),问:What evidence is missing?
HOW LONG?(duration)、HOW WELL?(quality / continuity)、WHEN?(circadian timing)。

No, that does not mean every sleep problem should be accepted as inevitable.

Sleeping differently does not mean needing less. Is this what they need — or simply what they are currently able to get?
