The “free” lunch
Jason enjoyed anything that didn't cost money. If there were free samples, free apps or free snacks, he would always be the first to try them. His motto was: “If it's free, why not?”
One day, a flyer on the store gate caught his eye: “Free Lunch at Happy Bite Café! This Friday only!” The flyer looked exciting. There was a big photo of burgers and fries, and the words were printed in bright red. Jason didn't see any rules, so he thought it must be a real free lunch.
On Friday, after work, he went to the café. It looked clean and modern. A friendly waitress gave him a tray with the free lunch. Jason also took a drink from the counter, thinking it was free too. The burger was big. The fries were hot and crispy and the drink tasted great. Jason was very pleased with what he got.
After he finished eating, he stood up to leave. But just then, the same waitress came over and said, “Hi! Just to let you know the drink isn't free. That will be $12.”
Jason was confused, “But I thought everything was free.” The waitress pointed to a small line at the bottom of the flyer. It said: “Lunch is free. Drinks are not included.”
Jason hadn't noticed that before, because the letters were too small to see clearly. He paid for the drink, but he didn't feel as happy as before. Later that day, when he told his friends what had happened, one of them laughed and said, “So you spent $12 on a free lunch?” Another joked, “Next time, bring your own water!” Jason laughed, but he didn't really feel happy.

Shopping is something we all do, but how we shop can be very different. Do you love looking for the best deals, or do you prefer following the latest fashion? We want to hear from you!
Danielle, 32
I love looking for bargains. Nothing makes me happier than finding a great deal, so I always check for discounts and special offers. Last week, I bought a lovely dress online — it was half price! I also like to compare prices before I buy something expensive. Why pay full price if you can save money? Still, I sometimes buy things I don't really need just because they're cheap. My husband says I should stop, but I call it shopping for fun!
Jake, 40
I don't like spending too much on clothes or gadgets. Some brands cost an arm and a leg, and I don't want to waste money on things I don't need. I prefer buying good-quality items that last. If something doesn't match my other clothes, I just don't buy it. Last month, I ordered some shoes online. I hoped they would fit perfectly, but they didn't. So I sent them back. Shopping isn't my favourite activity, but I try to be practical.
Gemma, 25
I love fashion and the newest trends. When I see something stylish, I buy it quickly because it might sell out fast. I also like going window shopping to get ideas for my next outfit. My friends say I spend too much, but I think it's worth it. Looking good makes me feel confident. These days, I often buy clothes from small online shops because they have cool and creative designs.
