Looking at the information in more detail, the overall population grew marginally from 4,381,269 in 2011 to 4,410,284 in 2012, representing an increase of 0.6%. The same trend could be seen in the age group of 40-to-64, with the figure rising from 1,331,907 to 1,339,898 over the same period. A much more pronounced growth was seen among those aged 65 and over, whose population grew by 4%, reaching 596,903 in 2012.

However, the two younger age groups exhibited slight declines in population. Although the 15-39-year-olds constituted the largest age group in both years, their number fell slightly from 1,577,256 in 2011 to 1,574,102 in 2012, a drop of 0.2%. Similarly, there was a decline of 0.2% in the number of under-15s, from 898,160 in 2011 to 896,364 one year later.
