Some people believe that, because of modern technology, it is no longer necessary to learn handwriting skills, while others think that handwriting is still an important skill. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Digital devices have transformed how people produce and exchange written information, prompting some to believe that handwriting no longer needs to be taught. Others, however, maintain that it remains an important skill. In my opinion, although typing deserves greater emphasis than before, learning to write clearly by hand is still necessary.

On the one hand, it is understandable why some consider handwriting instruction unnecessary and believe that schools should prioritise digital writing skills instead. This is because digital technology allows people to complete many everyday writing tasks more efficiently without having to write by hand. Unlike handwritten texts, electronic documents can be corrected and reorganised without being copied out again, which reduces the time spent on routine revisions. For example, students preparing a group assignment can edit a shared document and exchange comments immediately, leaving more time to evaluate evidence and refine their arguments. The same efficiency extends to workplaces, where employees can update reports and distribute them to colleagues without producing additional handwritten copies. As these tasks increasingly take place on digital platforms, proficiency in typing and editing becomes more relevant to everyday academic and professional demands, while learning to write by hand appears less necessary.

On the other hand, I would argue that handwriting remains an important skill that enables people to record and communicate information when digital alternatives are unavailable, particularly in regions where access to technology is limited. Specifically, children in underprivileged areas may lack suitable devices or a reliable electricity supply, preventing them from using digital writing tools. Without handwriting skills, they may struggle to complete exercises or record their teachers' explanations, while the ability to write by hand allows them to perform these tasks using inexpensive materials. Even in well-equipped schools and workplaces, reduced reliance on handwriting does not remove the need to learn it: when devices fail or run out of power, handwriting provides a valuable fallback. In such circumstances, people who can write legibly can still take notes or leave instructions, so learning and essential communication can continue despite the temporary loss of access to digital tools.

In conclusion, although digital tools make written tasks more efficient and reduce reliance on handwriting, they are not always available. The ability to write by hand preserves access to learning and communication in such circumstances, so it should remain part of education alongside digital writing skills.
