You Think You Choose, But the Algorithm Chooses You

Open any social media app, and you are greeted by an endless feed of content. Every video, every article, every advertisement has been selected for you by an algorithm. It knows what you like, what you dislike, what makes you angry, and what makes you keep scrolling. You think you are choosing what to watch. But in reality, the algorithm is choosing what you see. And over time, it shapes how you think.

This creates what researchers call an "echo chamber" or an "information cocoon". The algorithm shows you more of what you already agree with, and less of what might challenge your views. Over time, your beliefs become stronger and less flexible. You start to believe that everyone thinks the same way, because everyone in your feed does. When you encounter a different opinion, it feels not just wrong, but threatening.

The problem is compounded by the business model. Social media companies make money from attention. The longer you stay on the app, the more ads they can show you. So the algorithm is designed not to show you the truth, but to show you whatever keeps you engaged. And nothing keeps people engaged like outrage, fear, and divisiondiscourse that is increasingly polarized, where nuance dies and extremes thrive.

Breaking out of the cocoon requires effort. It means deliberately seeking out perspectives different from your own. It means reading long articles instead of short headlines. It means asking "what evidence supports this?" before sharing. It means remembering that the person on the other side of the screen is a human being, not an enemy. The algorithm will always try to keep you in your box. But you are not a prisoner of the feed. You are the one who decides what to read, what to believe, and what to share.

无尽的feed(/fiːd/,信息流)。每个advertisement(/ədˈvɜːtɪsmənt/,广告)由algorithm(/ˈælɡərɪðəm/,算法)选择。

回声chamber(/ˈtʃeɪmbə(r)/,室)或信息cocoon(/kəˈkuːn/,茧房)。展示更多你同意的,更少可能challenge(/ˈtʃælɪndʒ/,挑战)你观点的。信念更强更不flexible(/ˈfleksəbl/,灵活的)。不同意见感觉threatening(/ˈθretnɪŋ/,威胁性的)。

compound(/kəmˈpaʊnd/,加剧)。从attention(/əˈtenʃn/,注意力)赚钱。 outrage(/ˈaʊtreɪdʒ/,愤怒)、恐惧、division(/dɪˈvɪʒn/,分裂)最让人保持参与。公共discourse(/ˈdɪskɔːs/,话语)日益polarize(/ˈpəʊləraɪz/,两极分化),极端thrive(/θraɪv/,兴盛)。

刻意寻找不同perspective(/pəˈspektɪv/,观点)。 记住屏幕另一边是人不是enemy(/ˈenəmi/,敌人)。
