Para. 1 Not long ago, my fifth-grade son Kevin asked me about the meaning of a word in a novel. "Look it up," I responded. "But my screen time is off," he said. I looked pointedly at the bookshelf that held at least three dictionaries, and Kevin sighed dramatically. "Can't you just use your phone?" he asked. Suddenly it occurred to me that he did not even know how to use a dictionary.

Para. 2 I took down one of the dictionaries, and we read it together for a few minutes before I handed it to him. It took him a few tries to find the word in question. While going through the pages, he kept saying, wide-eyed: "How can there be this many words?" After a while, he looked at me and asked, "Do you know all these words, Mom?" I smiled, "I definitely do not know all these words," I said. "But that's why this is one of my favorite books."

Para. 3 I had my first dictionary as a gift for my 13th birthday. I decided that I wanted to learn as many words as I could and started marking every entry I looked up with a pencil to measure my progress. I continued to make these pencil marks for years, and when I went off to college, I packed that dictionary in my suitcase.

Para. 4 Kevin wanted to see the dictionary. I felt a small pain in my chest. The dictionary was stolen at the end of my freshman year of college. "That's so sad," he said, "but you still know all those words, even without the book." I realized that this was true. I still made it through the next three years of college, even without the book. And it wasn't, ultimately, the dictionary that got me there — not really.

Para. 5 Now I understand that although my son may be learning differently, he is still learning. It's not about the words themselves or how we learn them, but the wanting to know them, the curiosity and the appetite.

Not long ago, my fifth-grade son Kevin asked me about the meaning of a word in a novel.

I took down one of the dictionaries, and we read it together for a few minutes before I handed it to him.

It took him a few tries to find the word in question.

While going through the pages, he kept saying, wide-eyed: "How can there be this many words?"

After a while, he looked at me and asked, "Do you know all these words, Mom?"

I smiled, "I definitely do not know all these words. But that's why this is one of my favorite books."

I had my first dictionary as a gift for my 13th birthday.

I decided that I wanted to learn as many words as I could and started marking every entry I looked up with a pencil to measure my progress.

I continued to make these pencil marks for years, and when I went off to college, I packed that dictionary in my suitcase.

Kevin wanted to see the dictionary. I felt a small pain in my chest.

The dictionary was stolen at the end of my freshman year of college.

"That's so sad," he said, "but you still know all those words, even without the book."

I realized that this was true. I still made it through the next three years of college, even without the book.

And it wasn't, ultimately, the dictionary that got me there — not really.

Now I understand that although my son may be learning differently, he is still learning.

It's not about the words themselves or how we learn them, but the wanting to know them, the curiosity and the appetite.

1. respondv.

Look it up,' I responded.("查字典去。"

怎么用:respond to... 对……作出回应;in response to...

2. pointedlyadv.

I looked pointedly at the bookshelf...(我"意味深长地"瞅向书架——潜台词:字典就在那儿,别装看不见)

怎么用:point at / to 指向;point out 指出;a pointed question 尖锐的问题

3. sighv./n.

怎么用:sigh with relief 如释重负地松口气;let out a sigh 叹口气

4. dramaticallyadv.

It occurred to me that he did not even know how to use a dictionary.(我突然反应过来,他连字典都不会用。)

It occurred to me that...

It struck me that... / It hit me that... / It dawned on me that...(一个比一个有画面感)

小提醒:occur 不用被动,别写 be occurred to。

6. in question

原文:the word in question(他们要查的那个词)

一窝近亲:beyond question 毫无疑问 / out of the question 想都别想(注意≠ out of question!)/ call...into question 质疑

高考怎么考:放在名词后面当"后置定语",相当于 the word (that was) being discussed。

While going through the pages(哗哗翻页的时候)

三副面孔:go through hardships 吃苦头、经历磨难 / go through the files 翻查文件 / 还能表示"花光、用光"

分清:go over 复习、go by(时间)流逝、go about 着手干——长得像,意思差远了。

8. wide-eyedadj.

原文:he kept saying, wide-eyed(他眼睛瞪得溜圆,嘴里不停)

9. entryn.

原文:marking every entry I looked up(给查过的每个词条画记号)

10. measurev.

原文:to measure my progress(看看自己到底进步了多少)

怎么用:take measures to do sth.

11. make it (through)挺过来了;办成了

原文:I still made it through the next three years of college(后面三年我照样顺利混……

喊一句 "I made it!"

12. appetiten.

原文:the curiosity and the appetite(好奇心,和那股子求知欲)

怎么用:have a good/poor appetite 胃口好/差;an appetite for knowledge 求知若渴;whet one's appetite 吊胃口

同类选手:taste(品味)、hunger(渴望)。

句型 1|"Can't you just...?"

"Can't you just use your phone?" ——

Can't you just give me a second?(你就不能等我一秒吗?)

句型 2|It occurred to me that...(我突然想到……)

说白了 = I suddenly realized that...

It suddenly occurred to me that I'd seen him somewhere before.(我猛地想起以前在哪儿见过他。)

句型 3|It takes sb. + 时间/次数 + to do(花了几次才搞定)

It took him a few tries to find the word. ——

It took me three attempts to pass the driving test.(驾照我考了三回才过,说多了都是泪。)

句型 4|While going through...

While (he was) going through the pages —— 主从句主语一样、从句里又有 be 动词时,"主语 + be"直接砍掉。

When asked about her hobby, she smiled.(被问到爱好,她笑了。)

句型 5|It wasn't... that...

It wasn't, ultimately, the dictionary that got me there.

The dictionary didn't get me there,通顺,坐实强调句。

It wasn't the money that made her happy — it was being recognized.(让她高兴的真不是钱,是被看见。)

句型 6|not... but...

It's not about the words but the wanting to know them.

not A but B,前后必须长得对称(都是名词短语)。顺便拜一下本文的点睛操作:the wanting to know them——动词 want 直接名词化,地道得不行。

Success is not about talent, but persistence.(成功这事儿,靠的不是天赋,是死磕。)

句型 7|although + may be doing(让步 + 进行体)

Although my son may be learning differently, he is still learning. ——

Although they may be arguing constantly, they still care about each other.(吵归吵,人家还是在乎对方的。)

It occurred to me that...(形式主语)、It took him...(形式主语)、it wasn't...that(强调句)、make it through(虚指宾语)。

③ 定语从句省关系词:every entry (that) I looked up —— 关系词作宾语,直接省。顺带注意 look up 是"动词+副词"分离式搭配:look the word up 也行。

The dictionary was stolen —— was + 过去分词,"字典被偷"。时间点是 at the end of my freshman year,过去时没跑了。

While going through the pages —— 省了 he was。

⑥ may + be doing:may be learning differently —— "可能正在以不同方式学",推测语气,留了余地。

它在给后文 but the wanting...
