There was a time when people went places to see them. Now, many people go places to photograph them. A meal arrives at the table, and the first thing that happens is not eating — it is taking a picture. This is the culture of "getting the perfect shot," and it has changed how we experience the world.
The pressure is especially strong for young people. On socialmedia, a good photo can bring hundreds of likes. A bad photo can feel like a failure. The answer is not to throw away your phone. It is to remember why you wanted to be there in the first place. Take the photo, then put the phone down. Eat the food while it is hot. Watch the sunset until the last light disappears. The picture will fade from your feed in a day. The memory of actually being there — without a screen between you and the world — will last much longer.
