Learning to Fly

Maybe you think that bungee jumping isn’t exciting enough. If that is how you feel, then there is another extreme sport that you can try. It is called wingsuit diving.

A wingsuit is a special outfit. It has long sleeves that look like wings. A wingsuit diver also wears a helmet and a parachute.

Just like bungee jumpers, wingsuit divers jump from a high place. However, although a bungee jumper can jump from a bridge or a building, a wingsuit diver must jump from an even higher place. A bridge or a building would be too low.

When a bungee jumper jumps, he or she falls straight down. However, a wingsuit lets a person glide through the air. The air lifts the suit’s wings. The person looks like he or she is flying. Wingsuit divers can go very fast. Their top speed is more than 225 kilometers per hour.

Here is another difference between wingsuit diving and bungee jumping. Almost anybody can go bungee jumping. After all, bungee jumping is scary, but it’s easy. You just close your eyes and jump. On the other hand, very few people are allowed to go wingsuit diving. This is because wingsuit diving is so difficult. It’s very hard to control a wingsuit. In order to become a wingsuit diver, a person must parachute from an airplane at least 200 times. If you have not done that, then you’re not allowed to buy a wingsuit.

Wingsuit diving is still pretty rare. It’s not as common as bungee jumping or other extreme sports. However, it is becoming more and more popular every year. Ten years ago, very few people knew about this extreme sport. Now it seems like everybody is discussing it. Now there is even a yearly event called the World Wingsuit Championship.

蹦极者起跳之后，会垂直下落。而翼装可以让人在空中滑翔，气流托起翼装的“翅膀”，人看起来就像在飞翔。翼装飞行者速度极快，最高时速可以超过225千米。

翼装飞行和蹦极还有一处区别：几乎所有人都可以体验蹦极。毕竟，蹦极虽然吓人，但操作简单，你只需闭上眼睛纵身一跃。而另一方面，很少有人能够进行翼装飞行。因为这项运动难度极高，翼装很难操控。想要成为翼装飞行者，必须完成至少200次飞机跳伞。没有达到这个次数，就不允许购买翼装。

翼装飞行目前依旧比较小众，不像蹦极或者其他极限运动那么普及。不过这项运动每年都越来越受欢迎。十年前，很少有人听说这项极限运动，而现在几乎人人都在谈论它，甚至还有一年一度的世界翼装飞行锦标赛。
