A Stand Full of Shared Umbrellas

It was a rainy Monday when I first noticed the umbrella stand at our school gate. It was just an old wooden box, but it was  1  of umbrellas of every colour. A paper sign on it read: "Need one? Take one. Have a spare? Leave one."

Ultimate Frisbee Comes to P.E. Class

This term, our school introduced a new sport in P.E. lessons: ultimate frisbee. At first, many of us thought it was just "throwing a plastic disc around". After a few weeks, we discovered it was much more than that.

Ultimate frisbee is played by two teams of seven players on a field. Players score by catching the disc in the other team's end zone, a little like American football. But there is one big difference: there is no referee. In most sports, players argue with referees about fouls. In ultimate, the players themselves decide. If there is a disagreement, the two players involved talk it over calmly until they agree. This rule is called the "Spirit of the Game", and it is the heart of the sport.

At the beginning, our class found this hard. When Lin caught the disc but stepped on the line, nobody called it — until a player from the other team reminded us kindly. From then on, we began calling our own fouls, even when it cost us points. Strangely, the games became more fun.

Our P.E. teacher, Mr. Zhao, says ultimate is growing fast in schools across the country. "It keeps students running, throwing and thinking," he said. "But more importantly, it teaches honesty. You can't hide from a call when you are the referee."
